The dog was left in the car with the A/C on while the officer was arresting and booking a women in the police station. I believe that the officer was negligent and had the car running in the parking lot so long that it ran out of gas! On the local news station they said they had the vehicle inspected at a garage and found nothing wrong with it! So it's my theory that the car ran out of gas. So..tax payers money is wasted! The OVPD is calling this a "tragic accident" ...tragic indeed, but avoidable! The officer should have known better then to leave the dog in the car, I think he should be punished, if anyone other than a police officer had this same situation happen to them, they wouldn't get off so easy. That poor, poor dog!

I personally know this person, this is a "Police DOG". If the officer was not busy with a criminal booking, the dog would have not been waiting outside for his partner in the safest place out of the heat at that moment in time. You can not leave the Police Dog home when it comes to crime solving. When they are acting officers in good and bad times. I feel that if the Officer really knew that the car was going to stall, do you think he was going to unprotect his partner in such a way. He loved this animal as his own child and is taking this very hard.

Why didn't the officer bring his partner inside the station? Why leave the police car running since it wastes gas?

This doesn't make scence. You say that this Officer is upset at his loss. Maybe scared, Not knowing if he would be in trouble or not. But then remembering that there is a double standered for them compared to the rest of us.As much tranning they have with these dogs, and as many times you hear on the news that you don't leave your animals or child in a vehical for any reason when its hot outside. This year being one of our hottest.I'm sure He could of gone back outside and brought his partner in, it would of only taken about 5min.and I don't beleave he was the only one working that day.

This officer should have been arrested and charged for cruelty to animals. It is against the law to leave your dog in the car. Does the law not apply to police officers. This officer's thinking is faulty. Maybe he shouldn't be walking around with a gun.

why i it we come down hard on those who make mistakes and then not look into our own lives for the one we have committed ...this dog served the community and helped his partner and i am sure if he could retake it all back he would do it....but we can not forget the impermanence of all things including life....we will never know of its untimely fate in any order of things to come...if you can find it your hearts to understand the nature of death and human error than you can find it in your heart to call or send the person involved in this dogs death a card of condolence and or a phone call to console for his loss

What a tragedy! I'm sure if the officer had any idea that the vehicle would stall or run out of gas his partner would have accompanied him inside. Just like other things we do in life, if we think it'll only take a few minutes, it seems to take forever. My heart and prayers go out to this officer for his loss.

Negligence is why this dog suffered and died. Carelessness should be a crime. This cop should be reprimanded regardless, and not able to work with another police dog again. If you think this is harsh, think of that helpless dog, who trusted his partner.

it is policy for k-9 officers to leave there dogs in the vehicle with it running and the air conditioning on. i dont know what caused the vehicle to stall but all the k-9 officers in balt county lock the vehicle with it running and the dog inside. the vehicles arent stolen as nobody wants an angry police dog clamped around their neck.

HAVING CONDUCTED TRAINING IN RIOT CONTROL IN THE MILITARY ....IT APPEARS THAT THE OFFICER DID NOT HAVE SATISFACTORY PRE TRINING AND EVEALUATION BEFORE ASSIGNED THE DOG.
IT WOULD APPEAR THAT PERHAPS THE OFFICER SHOULD HAVE BEEN TRAINED THAT AFTER SECURED IN THE STATION AND BEFORE BOOKING THE ARRESTED PARTY IN THE STATION HE SHOULD HAVE BRING TRAININD TO IMMEDIATELY BRING IN THE DOG INTO THE STATION BEFORE COMPLETING THE REQUESITE PAPER WORK!!!
POLICE DOGS ARE AN ESSENTIALY POLICE RESOURCE AND CAN COOL ANY SITUATION QUICKLY AS WELL HELP PREVENT INJURY TO OFFICERS ETC.
I HOPE THAT THSI INCIDENT WILL NOT END THE UTILIZATION OF POLICE DOGS BUT THE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES SURELY SHOULD BE CAREFULLY REIEWED AND ADJUSTED CONCERNING NOT ONLY THE HEAT BUT SEVERAL OF ISSUES RELATED TO DEPLOLYMENT OF POLICE DOGS AND TRINING FOR THEIR HANDLERS.
