DANIEL ELLSBERG, FAMED WHISTLEBLOWER OF THE PENTAGON PAPERS:

****A FINAL WORD FOR THOSE INSIDE THE SYSTEM TO STEP FORWARD****

AMY GOODMAN: Dan Ellsberg, why don’t you pick it up from there, and that is how what you did then relates to today. In the last few years, you have been calling for people, who like you 35 years ago were inside the system, to step outside and to release an equivalent of the Pentagon Papers. Do you think they exist—the papers and these people who could step forward?

DANIEL ELLSBERG: Well, of course, the papers exist. The Pentagon Papers, the equivalent of them, exist in safes in Washington, all over Washington, not only in the Pentagon, but in the CIA and the State Department and elsewhere. Are there people who realize what the meaning of those—the full meaning of those papers in their safes? Yes. We know from many leaks and memoirs that have come out that there were people in the White House and the CIA and the Pentagon who realized that we were being lied into war. They realized that as early as 2001.

So my message, Amy, over the last two years has been to officials in that position, of whom there are hundreds, not only in 2001 and 2002, hundreds right now who could prevent a war with Iran that is on the tracks right now, that they know, and that they know would be disastrous. They could put that out with the authority of their position, but especially of documents, at the risk—the certainty—of losing their clearances, which would almost certainly—which would mean losing their career with the executive branch, possibly, very likely, subjecting them to prosecution, possibly to conviction, possibly to prison. And by taking that risk, they would have a high chance of averting a catastrophe that would lead to the deaths of tens, hundreds of thousands of people and disastrously reduce our security. They know that. So by taking their own personal risk, like the 5,000 people who went to prison as draft resisters in Vietnam, and by the people here who took risks with their institution and their privacy, by taking that risk they could avert this.

SO MY MESSAGE IS TO THEM:

Don’t do what I did. Don’t wait 'til the war has started. Don't wait 'til the bombs have fallen against Iran, or earlier Iraq. Don't wait ’til the engine of this war is unstoppable. Before the war, take the risk. REVEAL WHAT YOU KNOW TO BE THE TRUTH. Reveal the truth under the lies of your own bosses and your superiors. OBEY YOUR OATH TO THE CONSTITUTION, which every one of those officials took, not to the commander-in-chief, not to superior officers, but to the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES, which they know is being violated.

AMY GOODMAN: Pentagon whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, Unitarian leader Robert West, and Democratic presidential candidate Mike Gravel.

LAWMAKERS WHO UPHELD NSA SPYING RECEIVED DOUBLE THE DEFENSE INDUSTRY MONEY

That’s the upshot of a new analysis by MapLight, a Berkeley-based non-profit that performed the inquiry at WIRED’s request. The investigation shows that defense cash was a better predictor of a member’s vote on the Amash amendment than party affiliation. House members who voted to continue the massive phone-call-metadata spy program, on average, raked in 122 percent more money from defense contractors than those who voted to dismantle it.

GANG STALKING IS MURDER DOT WORDPRESS DOT COM

"Based on my investigative work...I have come to the conclusion that
thousands of victims have been targeted by an illegal government rogue
criminal enterprise that is active 24 hours a day in the U.S. This
conspiracy is far too active to be controlled or operated by private
enterprise whose goals are achieving financial gain. These operations
require extensive financing with no return on the investment. This
program's operations are financed by illegal black operations, i.e.,
narcotics, prostitution...

I have documentation and know that throughout the U.S., operating 24
hours a day and 7 days a week, there is a Central Command...whose
administrators can instantly initiate surveillance, phone taps and
harassment against anyone in the country...at any time, day or night. I
have files on numerous cases of active, programmatic, illegal
government harassment currently being conducted against thousands of
Americans. This makes the FBI's former COINTELPRO program, which I
worked on, including in a supervisory capacity, look like a Sunday
school program by comparison."

XKEYSCORE: NSA TOOL COLLECTS NEARLY EVERYTHING A USER DOES ON THE INTERNET

____by Glenn Greenwald

A top secret National Security Agency program allows analysts to search with no prior authorization through vast databases containing emails, online chats and the browsing histories of millions of individuals, according to documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The NSA boasts in training materials that the program, called XKeyscore, is its "widest-reaching" system for developing intelligence from the internet.

ARMY GENERAL KEITH ALEXANDER (NSA) HECKLED

The director of the National Security Agency faced a tough crowd at the premier yearly gathering of hackers in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Army Gen. Keith Alexander gave the keynote address at the Black Hat USA convention on the same day the British newspaper The Guardian published more details on a top-secret program that collects vast amount of data transmitted over the Internet.

According to the AP, Alexander was heckled during his speech:

"'Freedom!' one man shouted from the middle of the standing-room crowd.

"'Exactly. We stand for freedom,' Alexander said.

"'Bulls—t,' the heckler said."

NEW YORK WOMAN PAID VISIT BY JOINT TERRORIST TASK FORCE FOR COOKING LENTILS

"I felt a sense of creeping dread take over. What else had I looked up? What kind of searches did I do that alone seemed innocent enough but put together could make someone suspicious? Were they judging me because my house was a mess (Oh my god, the joint terrorism task force was in my house and there were dirty dishes in my sink!). Mostly I felt a great sense of anxiety. This is where we are at. Where you have no expectation of privacy. Where trying to learn how to cook some lentils could possibly land you on a watch list. Where you have to watch every little thing you do because someone else is watching every little thing you do."

CONGRESS TO AMERICANS: "NON OF YOUR BUSINESS"

The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence reportedly gave its approval last week to an Obama administration plan to provide weapons to moderate rebels in Syria, but how individual members of the committee stood on the subject remains unknown.

There was no public debate and no public vote when one of the most contentious topics in American foreign policy was decided – outside of the view of constituents, who oppose the president’s plan to aid the rebels by 54 percent to 37 percent, according to a Gallup Poll last month.

FBI ALLOWS ITS'CRIMINAL INFORMANTS TO BREAK 5,600 CRIMES IN ONE YEAR

The U.S. Justice Department ordered the FBI to begin tracking crimes by its informants more than a decade ago, after the agency admitted that its agents had allowed Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger to operate a brutal crime ring in exchange for information about the Mafia. The FBI submits that tally to top Justice Department officials each year, but has never before made it public.

Agents authorized 15 crimes a day, on average, including everything from buying and selling illegal drugs to bribing government officials and plotting robberies. FBI officials have said in the past that permitting their informants — who are often criminals themselves — to break the law is an indispensable, if sometimes distasteful, part of investigating criminal organizations.

YOUR TV MAY BE WATCHING YOU

Watching the watchers” is taking on a whole new meaning.

News that Google Inc.(NASDAQ:GOOG) may be developing a television set-top box with a motion sensor and video camera has rekindled the debate over technology that can record so-called ambient action. Should a TV-mounted box have the ability to track our movements, record our voices and monitor our behaviors? Should cable providers and tech companies be allowed to collect such information without our consent?

FBI RAN CHILD PORN SITE FOR TWO WEEKS

Last November, the FBI raided a bulletin board-style site that was known to be a home of child pornography. But rather than shutting it down, they decided to keep it running—and see just how many users they could identify.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Bureau agents posed as child porn dealers, actively distributing pornography while the site was under their control—just as other agencies perform sting operations with drugs and prostitution.

U.S. DIRECTS AGENTS TO COVER UP PROGRAM USED TO INVESTIGATE AMERICANS

(Reuters)- A secretive U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration unit is funneling information from intelligence intercepts, wiretaps, informants and a massive database of telephone records to authorities across the nation to help them launch criminal investigations of Americans.

Although these cases rarely involve national security issues, documents reviewed by Reuters show that law enforcement agents have been directed to conceal how such investigations truly begin - not only from defense lawyers but also sometimes from prosecutors and judges.

ARMY'S CONTRACT WITH AL-QAEDA-LINKED COMPANIES

The U.S. Army is refusing to suspend contracts with dozens of companies and individuals tied to Al Qaeda and other extremist groups out of concern for their "due process rights," despite repeated pleas from the chief watchdog for Afghanistan reconstruction.

In a scathing passage of his latest report to Congress, Special Inspector General John Sopko said his office has urged the Army to suspend or debar 43 contractors over concerns about ties to the Afghanistan insurgency, "including supporters of the Taliban, the Haqqani network and al Qaeda."

FBI SUSPECTED OF ATTACK ON TOR BROWSER

Security researchers tonight are poring over a piece of malicious software that takes advantage of a Firefox security vulnerability to identify some users of the privacy-protecting Tor anonymity network.

The malware showed up Sunday morning on multiple websites hosted by the anonymous hosting company Freedom Hosting. That would normally be considered a blatantly criminal “drive-by” hack attack, but nobody’s calling in the FBI this time. The FBI is the prime suspect.

JOURNALISTS WORRY ABOUT "BLACKLISTING" FOR REPORTING (TRUTHFULLY) ON BENGHAZI

Following these revelatory reports, which some in President Barack Obama’s administration believe represent a political threat, some CNN reporters now fear for their access to the White House. They are not alone.

On July 31, CNN’s The Situation Room broadcast a portion of an interview conducted by reporter Arwa Damon with a suspect in the Benghazi attacks. The suspect revealed to Damon that no investigator has attempted to contact him regarding his involvement in that deadly assault.

The following day, CNN’s Drew Griffin broke the news that more than 30 CIA agents were on the ground in Libya on the day of the attack and they are being pressured by the spy agency to not reveal to reporters or congressional investigators what they know of the events of that night.

FBI USING STASI TECHNIQUES IN ITS' GANG STALKING PROGRAM

“Washington is using American-style Stasi methods…I thought this era had ended when the DDR fell…”
–Markus Ferber, German Member of European Parliament on NSA PRISM scandal

“The right to be left alone — the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men”– Justice Louis Brandeis, 1928.

Any such right, if it ever really existed at all in the U.S., is gone. Markus Ferber has it right —“Washington IS using American-style Stasi methods”, but the full extent of what’s transpiring remains a closely guarded secret, to date.

Gang-stalking is referred to as “bullying on steroids”, by many, even some in law enforcement:

INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST MICHAEL HASTINGS' DEATH AND THE WAR WITH THE SECURITY STATE

_____The connections between Michael Hastings, Edward Snowden and Barrett Brown

Journalist Michael Hastings was researching a story that threatened to expose powerful entities and government-connected figures. That story intersected with the work of two controversial government critics—the hacker Barrett Brown and the on-the-run surveillance whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Any probe into Hastings’s untimely death needs to take into account this complex but essential background....

But First, the Raw Facts:

A little over 12 hours before his car was incinerated on an LA straightaway on June 18, 2013, Hastings sent out a short email headed,“FBI Investigation, re: NSA.” He said that the FBI had been interviewing his “close friends and associates,” and advised the recipients — including colleagues at the website Buzzfeed —“[It] may be wise to immediately request legal counsel before any conversations or interviews about our news-gathering practices or related journalism issues.” He added,“I’m onto a big story, and need to go off the radat [sic] for a bit.”

Deep Background:

When the FBI raided the Dallas home of journalist Barrett Brown in March 2012, the travails of the Vanity Fair and Guardian contributor didn’t get much ink — that is, until Michael Hastings published an exclusive on the Brown raid on Buzzfeed.

"To Maintain and Cultivate an Enemies List":

In his profile,True/Slant, Hastings confided that his “secret ambition” was “to maintain and cultivate an enemies list.” He knew that power corrupted, and to effect change it was necessary to point out the Emperor’s glaringly naked flesh.

"Not One Of Us":

Hastings was referring to his impending 2010 article,“The Runaway General,” for Rolling Stone, in which he quoted several high-ranking military officials from within Gen. McChrystal’s inner circle disparaging their civilian command. The article caused a stir in official Washington, and eventually led to McChrystal being relieved of duty by President Obama.

Hastings had broken one of the rules governing Washington’s hermetic circle of “access journalism” by quoting his subjects without their express permission. Elsewhere, most working reporters would call this, well, journalism.

"Get Ready for Your Mind to Be Blown":

For Hastings, Brown was clearly a confidential source—the type that flourishes best when kept in the dark and away from other reporters. Yet on January 24, 2013, Hastings tweeted that he was finally beginning to work on the Brown story, telling his interlocutors to “get ready for your mind to be blown.”

Your Data Is Mine:

Gallagher, who was briefed on the last discussion Hastings had with Brown before the planned interview, says,“Hastings had specifically asked about Romas/COIN.”

Checkmate:

Claims of government surveillance capabilities embedded in private-company software are bolstered by recent reporting on the sale of “zero-day exploits” to government agencies.

Sock Puppets and Other Tricks:

In a May 18, 2012, article on propaganda efforts by the State Department, Hastings referred to a “program being developed by the Pentagon [that] would design software to create “sock puppets” on social media outlets.” The HBGary emails:“persona management” technology.

It sought providers of “persona management software” that would allow 50 users to control up to 500 fictional personae.

Gone With The Mercedes:

Hopefully, more information will come to light, and we will know with a fair degree of certainty what Michael Hastings was working on that attracted the government’s watchful eye. That is, unless all of his information was incinerated with him in the early hours of that June morning.

In a May 18, 2012, article on propaganda efforts by the State Department, Hastings referred to a “program being developed by the Pentagon [that] would design software to create “sock puppets” on social media outlets.” The HBGary emails are littered with references to this type of “persona management” technology.

Principal among these was a June 2010 United States Air Force (USAF) contract from the 6th Contracting Squadron at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. It sought providers of “persona management software” that would allow 50 users to control up to 500 fictional personae.

These sock puppets were required to be “replete with background, history, supporting details, and cyber presences that are technically, culturally, and geographically consistent.” In other words, avatars so convincing they could fool the people with whom they were interacting into believing they were real.
