I grew up on Betsy Rd in the the 80's and walked past Kays everyday and went in there alot. I have to wonder does anybody have any old photos of the shop?
Back in the late 60's you would have been referred to as a "Betsey Roader." At least that's what we on Cassidy Drive called all the kids who lived on Betsy Road.

My brother and I were just searching for Kay's Gag Shop on Google and were disappointed with the lack of results. We were happy to find this message thread though, keeping the memory of the Gag Shop alive. As kids we would always go to Kay's Gag Shop completely mesmerized by Kay and the odd assortment of masks and gags on the old shelves. As someone else in this thread said, Kay's Gag Shop is burned into my memory.
If anyone has any pictures of this place please post them!
Mr diloreto... Where have you been all my life!
Haha Kay's was the best!
Anywho thought it was funny coming across your name.. Miss you! If you ever do see this we should meet and catch up, hope your doing great!
Please respond if u would like to, ever time I drive by your mothers I'm tempted to stop in to see if you're there..

It's the quirks like Kay's Gag Shop that make me think so fondly of my hometown. I know no place like Plainville, CT. I'd like to learn a bit more about this shop, about the woman who ran it. If anyone has any stories they would like to share about the place, I would love to hear about them.

I remember Kay's. We used to get red lips, six pack of those wax drink bottles, candies that don't exist. All kinds of penny candy that are 10 cents if you can get them. She was an excentric Landy that was nice. I miss some of those days. I knew Tommy Hollis and his dad's store up the street.

We would go to Kays after school.(Wheeler school) Load up on penny candy, and stuff that exploded.
Kay was an eccentric lady, but very nice to us kids. She had too many cats, and remember her coal black eyeliner, red lipstick. Always thought she was a gypsy.
The person killed at the trailer was her Grandson, and their last name was Winters. Im not sure the Daughter who had been killed young in a car accident had ever married.
God memory.

I went in to Kays in about the 50's did not remember the cat urine but Kay was a strant person I knew Tommy Holis ( I think) His dad owned the food store/freezer. Kays had a lot of stuff but it looked newer than the other posts had. There definately was strange things going on in back of the store. I also knew Scott Soper who went to kays with me and the wax bottles of something that you could drink. All for now.

Wow, blast from the past. She was a very nice woman that was very much abused by her grandchildren. Her husband died of a heart attack. Her daughter Irene died two years after having a daughter also named Irene. She too died as young child. The son-in-law Robert Winters, was murdered. His son also named Robert Jr short changed a drug dealer. The drug dealer went to the house to confront Jr and when Sr answered the door, the drug dealer asked if he was Robert Winters. He said yes, and was stabbed. The trailer in the back was a hangout for his kids and misfits. The gang of kids that hung around there finally grew up and went their separate ways. Oh, Sr also had another son, Donald Winters who was in jail for rape and went to jail for something else too. Kay had a very sad and lonely life. Her grandkids were stealing her SS checks so the town social workers put her in a nursing home and sold the property to pay the bills. She died alone in the nursing home down the road. Sad...

Kay's Gag Shop. What a blast from the past. My first visit there I was about 11 years old. My Grandfather took me there one cool autumn afternoon. I walked in wide eyed and curious. The stench stunned me as I entered. I knew I was in for an experience. I was as nervous as my first haunted house experience. Getting past the odor I was immediately approached by a wild eyed semi-toothed woman swinging two long objects wildly over her head. I froze in fear.[During subsequent visits I learned these were merely phallic extensions.] Grandad let out a big belly laugh and said "Kid, relax and enjoy the ride". Shortly after Grandad disappeared in the back with Kay, and I was left to explore only as the uninitiated can. I could go on endlessly describing all manner of gags, garb and ghouls contained within. After what seemed like an eternity, I notice a very large steaming dump on the counter near the window. I thought that was the coolest, largest, most realistic gag I had ever seen and I had to have it. Much to my dismay when I reached and latched on to the smoking turd it squished through my little fingers like so much chocolate pudding. But man it did not smell like pudding. I started to wretch and hurl when just about that time Grandpa emerged from the back room, laid a couple of crisp Franklins on the counter and said "Boy, we got to get home and get ourselves clean." Over the years I made many trips back to Kay's, but that first experience could never be duplicated. Sure miss that shop.
