"“In 2016, renewables received about 100 times more in federal subsidies than nuclear plants,” Michael Shellenberger, founder of the Berkeley, California-based, pro-nuclear advocacy group Environmental Progress, wrote in an email to Grist.“If nuclear received a fraction of those subsidies, there would be no risk of nuclear plants closing in California or anywhere else.”"

This B.S. is an out and out lie. San Onofre was upgraded then had a leak. It was determined that there was severe damage to the cooling system, it was shut down. Talking about "advanced" nuclear generation technologies is NOT getting anything past the NRC other than technology 'tweeked' LWR that have the same storage and disposal of waste as the 'old' LWR plants online now. The 'subsidies' for Solar PV and wind generation were a lot closer to the subsidies for coal, gas, oil. The coal, gas, oil industries are 150 years old, when will they be able to stand on their own? Having 'new' technology nuclear plants online that could use the "spent fuel rods" of the old LWR plants would be a step in the right direction. Non nuclear proliferation agreements is one road block to being able to use the stored rods as fuel in another type of plant. The NRC is not issuing permits for any other nuclear plant than LWR. This whole "puffed up article" is at best half-truth based journalism.
