I usually take my taxes to Lancaster (Joyce Ballard) to prepare. The fee is usually around $100.00 as ours is never complicated. This year someone suggested Tax Wise, by H & R Block on North Broadway, Berea. Don't know why I was such an idiot as I did not question how much the fee was until he was finished and I offered to pay. He stated that the fee would be deducted automatically out of the tax return which he had then placed in an envelope and given me a little sticky note with my tax return expected amounts. I said, "so how much was the preparation fee?" He said," around $350.00". I about fell over! I thought to myself. Lesson learned. This is my last time here! When I got home and opened the evelope, I ran some figures and found out that he actually charged me roughtly $462.00 to prepare my taxes. I called him and all he said was, "well-things are a little higher this year." RIGHT! I feel so violated! I don't care to give my name because I want others to be more aware than I was. I am usually more inquisitive than this but was in a hurry to get them done and didn't question up front. Don't go there if you don't want ripped off.

Is there any way you can back out on it and cancel with them? I don't know but there should be a way to do that, call the IRS and ask--and complain!

He got me audited about 8 years ago!!!! He kept telling me I could deduct this and that and most of it was bogus!! He is a crack pot!!! See a CPA and save the hassel. My CPA only charges $150.

If your taxes aren't complicated, then just buy TurboTax. It's around $50 and VERY easy to use. I've used it for the past 4 years and love it.

I've been going there for years they r the best. Never had a problem. When you filed when you saw how much you could of said no. So it's your own fault. As you said lesson learned.

Yes-I could have said no, if he had ever told me up front what the cost would be!!! When I called, he acted like it was no big deal. As you said, "lesson learned"- I just don't want others to learn this lesson the same way I did...nuff said.

They weren't complicated and I do use Turbo Tax as a back-up but wondered if there were any new tax laws I was not aware of. I guess I just didn't trust myself to file them as I have in the past and always got audited. Since going to Joyce Miller Accountants, I never got audited so I didn't want to run the risk.

Turbo Tax is updated every year so that it includes the most recent changes to tax law.

There is a version on line for free, but it is limited and I don't think you can e-file with the online freebie.

I have done my own taxes for years and I have used both Turbo Tax and H&R Block. H&R Block over charges for simple returns and they charge extra for audit representation with no gaurantee of a properly filed return. Essentially, you are still on the hook if they screw up. The only reason I use Turbo Tax is so I can e-file.

If you have a simple return, do it yourself or use the Turbo Tax software. If you have a complicated one and don't already have an accountant, go to a CPA who specializes in tax preparation. Get references and check them out with the Better Business Beareu. To save money on billable hours, make sure you have all your ducks in a row so they don't waste time trying to find a receipt or figure out your filing system. To them, TIME IS MONEY.

Good Luck.

Yes, by all means. I done it for years until my tax preperation needed a CPA.

Anything over $100.00 for a personal return is a damn rip-off. My CPA charged me $375.00 this year and covered 4 business related schedules + our regualr income preperation from jobs.

I hate rip-off people. I guess H&R or TaxWise or what ever has become the same as the loan sharks and check cashing asses.

I'm apologetic if any of our clients feel they have been treated unfairly in terms of price or professional service. We take pride in all of our offices and the time we spend in training all of our tax season help. Our prices are in line with our competitors and under the national averages for personal and business income tax returns. A simple call to ,y partner or myself would be appreciated rather than being advised of such harsh posts on topix. We appreciate and value all of our clients. If anyone is unsatisfied with the service they are given in any of our business locations we would appreciate knowing rather than being advised via ill repute on Topix. We do over 5,000 returns per year and have very few unsatisfied clients.

Hmm, so you use Turbo Tax, and you usually use Joyce Ballard, but since you been going to Joyce Miller, you've never been audited??? Sounds like you been going to a lot of different places. Is it that you are never satisfied and you bounce from one to another each year and then when you don't get the refund you want you vent in a forum like this?

I've had my taxes done at TaxWise in Berea for 6 years and the manager there knows his stuff. He's only been there 4 years (so he couldn't have got someone audited 8 years ago as someone else said). Every year he works very hard to get me the most money possible and having him do my tax return is worth every penny.

Don't get me wrong-I've never been to TaxWise. I'm sure they are competent and well liked, otherwise they wouldn't still be in business.**smile**

I've used H & R Block in several different states in the past for more complex returns (multiple state residency, Schedule C and multiple W-2's in one year)and I've been happy with them.

My only issue is the expense for a single form return. It would be cheaper for someone to do it themselves. I learned after the first time to get a quote prior to handing over my documents.

If you are paying a company just so you can e-file, you would do just as well to use TurboTax, provided your computer is virus/spyware free and your anti-virus and spyware software is up to date.

For your own safety, Do NOT under any circumstances use a public computer to do your taxes!

Happy Tax Season **smile**

My husband and I made an appointment at TaxWise in Richmond. The first sign something was wrong was they asked to see our social security cards. I have NEVER been asked for a social security card to file taxes (not to mention it is not recommended that you carry this card with you at all times). We got past that and the girl who we were scheduled with called our name then walked back to her desk (didn't say "follow me", didn't introduce herself, didn't say even 1 word other than our names). To this day I don't know her name. Next, she asked for our W2's. She did some typing and asked us a question about a new tax. When we asked what it meant she couldn't tell us - just simply said, "I really don't know myself". She went back to typing, then wrote some numbers on a post-it note and said, "this is your return and this is our cost". Completely puzzled, I looked at her and asked if she was finished and she said "yes". She had somehow completed our return without asking any questions regarding house ownership, deductions, dependents or any of the other hundred questions that go into a tax return. When I asked about deductions, she said with a lost look "I don't know".

Needless to say, we collected our W2's and walked out. I DID however stop by the manager's office and talk with her about the situation, but she couldn't have cared less. All she could offer was, "I'm sorry, she's just here to do simple returns". I was furious when we left there. I would not recommend their services to anyone.

By the way - we went from there to H&R Block where we received $2000 more on our refund than the girl had written on the post-note that she could get us.

These places are for people who don't really own anything other than a car and have hourly-type jobs.

Oh my gosh...this is so NOT true. I rarely get anything back (never expect anthing) and have ALWAYS went to Joyce Miller unless I did them myself. I have never been audited and have been completely happy with Joyce. The only reason I went to Tax Wise because a family member mentioned them to me and that it would save me the trip to Lancaster. I have never vented on a forum before and the ONLY reason I did so this time was to cue others in about being more observant than I was and ask questions up-front. That is all. If I just wanted to vent, do you think I would not have given my name. I am an very friendly and honest person who states facts rather than starts rumors and is unafraid to use her real name and not just "Observer" as you have done yourself. Just sayin'
