The bums and beggars who panhandle food in front of wallmart and mcd's are taking advantage of the good caring christian, and non-christian folks, who feel like helping others down on their luck! This is fine. I like to feel good about myself to. I have given money and food in the past, when I have seen it would be appreciated! However it is my direct and unwavering knowledge that 95% of the various panhandlers DO NOT WANT FOOD they want CASH! No matter what their sign says! They know it is easier for someone to give em a handfull of change or a few bucks than to give them food! Again, back to the 95%, they do not TRULY appear to be homeless. they are on the dole! believe that! decent clothes, decently groomed, And the sure sign of a homeless person is the condition of their shoes! WAKE up good samaritans! they want money for drugs! so if you feel like helping just give em cash! they throw the food away and rarely eat it! I have witnessed this by many of the various panhandlers. And I certainly like how they pull at the heartstrings of good folks by parading their well fed dogs out there with them! come on! And for those with minimal comprehension or informational retention skills I am, again, referring to the 95% out their asking for money who don't need it and just wanna get high! I recognize there is, on rare occasion, the stranded motorist or traveler!

You're probably right that most are frauds. But I would rather be taken advantage of by the 95% that let the 5% suffer.

don't let the 5% suffer! thats not what i'm advocating. I am saying is cut out the hassle of food just give cash! They are within spitting distance of about five or so fast food places. Use discretion in who you give cash to asfar as if they truly need it or just wanna get high! Some of em already sold out their food stamps for penny's on the dollar to buy dope, foodstamps us working stiffs pay taxes for along with their SSI checks! look at their eyes, their shoes etc. decide if your intuition validates their need! or just give em cash!

Not to long ago a man that I know stopped at a man who was holding a sign "Will work for food"; My friend offered him a job for 3 days 10.00 an hour. The man replied "I have to do this and I have to do that I will be too busy". My friend said "well then i'll be too busy to hand over my money that I worked so hard for, have a good day".

People say they will work for food but in the end all they want is to stand on the street corner and beg!!! After my friend drove off he was curious to see where the begger would go after he was done so he pulled over at Cracker Barrel and watched. Two hours later the begger walked toward him and to his supprise he got into a black frod mustang and drove off! Now what a way to live life!

I almost always give beggars money, but I tell them, "I'm only going to give this to you if you spend it on booze or drugs."

I have helped numerous people out, at the location you are referring to. I never once looked at their shoes, clothing, hair, etc. I looked in their eyes, and I handed them money and said "God bless you and your family," then drove away.

One time, I had exited Walmart and only had a $20 and a $50 on me. If I didn't need to put gas in my vehicle to get back and forth to work for another week, I would have handed him that $50.

I didn't think about what they planned to do with the money, nor did I care. I had but only a little to give, and I gave what I could.

I am doing my part. What are you all doing?

I also notice their shoes, pets, etc. It seems they all have hand lettered signs...with similar messages..all on cardboard...I've often wondered if they work together and are dropped off and picked up at certain times. Also have seen same people at different locations. Be aware of these things when digging for money to give them.
There may be legitimate reasons for some of them to be there, but if they are so desperate, there are local resources available. What next...children begging with them??? Could be just a con game.....Be aware!!!

I have donated to a couple different guys who seemed like they really needed it. I have never given cash but the one older gentleman had a dog with him so I got a small bag of dog food, bottled water and snack type food items for the man. I gave it to him in a recyclable bag. I was curious so I pulled off after I left to see what he would do.....
He went inside McDonalds with his pooch tied up to one of the tables in the back by Wal-Mart's parking lot, came back out and ate the foods I provided him and his dog. Good, honest man down on his luck.

Another fella just wanted some fresh, clean socks so he got them from me.

I will never provide cash but I will always look out for my fellow man in their time of need. You never know the circumstances that got them there.

I am the lead maintanance man at mcdonalds I started this thread out of a slight frustration that's two sided, first I clean up after them when they leave their food and water usually literally right where they were standing! Secondly I used to give my own bought, and sometimes free employee meals to them (last year). Keep in mind I work there 6 days a week and last year seven days a week, I spend a lot of time outside I see them get into nice cars, have had long conversations with them, I know there are on occasion a few who are needy. But after offering a guy who was holding a sign "hungry need help" a bag full of b-fast burritos and him telling me he just ate? yet still standing there panhandling I found my effort a little frustrating. After watching more than a few get into nice cars and leave, and a few more get into cars with a crew of people waiting for them in the parking lot, I realized about 95% of them are dishonest, and just looking for drug money or have a man or friend telling em to go out their to get them money. I have also noticed the same guy doing the same shtick in richmond. Last year we caught one of them on camera stealing a satelite radio out of a fellow employees car. They routinely bend open the used ciggarete receptacle for butts when all they had to do is turn a thumbscrew! and leave yet another mess. I have found used dirty needles in the parking lot, in the cigg receptacle, on a few occasions and the lobby ladies find them also in the bathroom trash! There is one friendly enough heavier lady used to stand between taco bell and mc'ds have talked to her many times she is kinda cool but own's or rents (not sure cause this is what SHE told me)a home and has kids in school locally? she was out there to get her bills paid, then her water heater was out then again she needed to pay her electric! I asked her if she had a job she said no! i'm sure she gets a check and I KNOW mc'ds is always hiring or at least accepting applications. I am not a rich man I sweat and hurt and work for my money and I am also a giving person i do give charity when it is needed, but giving charity to those who CHOOSE to DEPEND on that charity and prey on the giving spirit of good folks when the beggars are driving nicer cars then the people who are giving them money and living a better life personally offends me. is not helping them to get a job or better themselves it's reinforcing their act of swindling showing them standing here with a sign works! I work outside and inside there 6 days a week am a christian will help someone when I can and try to be a good person. I own a home a nice car pay my bills and I struggle with them at times but they litteraly make more an hour than I do?? I should stand out there (in the spirit of sincerity) wearing my work uniform holding a sign that reads "I HAVE A JOB, NEED HELP WITH HARLEY PAYMENT" well hope you liked my rant love you all peace and god bless I gotta go to work now!

Well just got off work, still got my boots on. Today there was a lady standing by the stop sign in front of the bank and chinese restaurant. didn't see her sign close enough to read it but she had a yellow shirt on, shorter hair, just above her shoulders. she was out there for 4 to 5 hours today collecting money. People in beat up cars gave her money others in nice top dollar rides gave her money. I just happened to be out there when her "shift" ended and I watched her walk over to cracker barrel and get in the drivers side of a white ford windstar minivan, it had a "kentucky" (UK) plate on the front. On the rear lower right window it had those little white stickers of a stick family. The license plate number is 821 JOL as she drove away I was watching her text on her cell phone, that or she was hitting the speed dial button? I just hope for the sake of all those people who gave her ALL that money I seen her collect, that she was calling her husband or mom who was watching her kids to tell them she has that bill that's coming due beginning of next month covered, and NOT calling her dopeman!?

spam?
clueless?
disagree?
Why? I said I hope she had her bill paid! Are those responses due to the posting of the plate #? That was the only thing that gave me pause when writing that comment. Decided it was important kinda like the arrest columns in the paper, people have a right to know! I could have just done as my many bosses and managers have told me I should do and called the police on her. But I CHOOSE not to! If I got on here and told you that I did that would you also...
spam.

We saw her get in the pretty nice van and get on her phone too. Sure hope she is putting it to good use for her family and not drugs.

Are there laws in Berea which prohibit begging?

If so, contact the police whenever you see them.
