why

Berea, KY

I thought Foley wouldnt allow their players to play anywhere but school. Yet, one of their players was playing for the predators. WHY ? I personally dont have a problem with playing these older teams, but lets even things out and allow middle school kids on our teams also.

This football league has done a real good job feeding the local high school football programs. When's the last time either Berea HS or Southern HS has had a winning team? From what I've seen (which has been from a distance) the Berea Youth Football is nothing but a bunch of REDNECKS.

I heard shanon telling people tonight that league parents were idiots and he isnt running a league for them! But what he dont understand is if the parents arn't happy they won'send their kids there next year hell they should pull them now before one gets hurt or killed [playing these older all star teams!

Who has gotten hurt from playing more experienced kids? No one. And even though we are playing "All Star" teams, that will only make us better in the long run.
My team, the Raiders, have played the biggest teams so far this season and it has only made us stronger as a team. This past Saturday we went into Mt. Sterling to play a team that came within 3 yards of beating the smaller predators team and shut them out 19-0 at their own field. That team was as big as us, although supposedly a grade younger.
When my team played the older predator team this year we lost by 4 TD's, which is the same amount I lost to them last year with a team that was comprised of 9 six graders and 3 5th graders.
Shannon and the board came into this thing late, or there wouldn't even be a league at all this year. He has scheduled what games he could at short notice.
Rockcastle county switched grade groups in their youth league, and Richmond Rec league won't play us with their regular teams because they are in a league and Jackson County didn't have a youth league this year is the reason why we are having to travel and pick up games where we can.
It's not ideal but given the choice between staying home or playing ball, I'll play ball anytime.
Players, and depth are developing. With our playing rules, where every kid gets a lot of playing time, I have seen first hand where some kids who any other year would barely see the field are becoming contributors.
It's easy to get on the internet and bad mouth people who don't do things "the way you would do it", but understand these are volunteer Board Members and volunteer coaches.
We have to change the culture of this league into one of support and stop all the bickering and infighting. My parents were concerned at first about the size of the teams we were playing, but after practice last night everyone that was there was saying how they wish we could go back and replay those same "All Star" teams and see how much closer we would play them.
And if we did play them again and lost by one or two tds, great! Then we played an All Star team close with Rec League kids. That would be like a high school team playing Highlands within a TD or 2, compared to beating like a Knott County Central (no disrespect to Knott County, but as of late their record is not so great)
I've been around a lot of football in my life, some good--and a lot bad, and there are some good coaches in this city.
But coaches can't do anything without support, and if a kid hears a parent badmouth a coach or the league then they aren't going to try as hard.
The most difficult job I've had in coaching my team this year, is erasing all the negativity from my kids heads. I even had some of them after the game say "I expected to lose today because everyone was saying we weren't any good." That negative thought process is coming from adults that the kids are hearing. What they need to hear is "listen to the coach and go out there and fight as hard as you can. It's too easy to give up. As long as you try hard we'll be proud of you."
I know its hard as parents and adults to keep our opinion to ourselves sometimes, but when expressing our opinion is destroying kids confidence we need to hold back for the good of the program. If we can get these kids to hold their heads high, then wins will come.
So let's all put aside this petty backbiting stuff and come together the rest of the season. Give it a shot, because the negativity isn't working at all. Or if you want to become involved contact the board and volunteer for next year so you can see how difficult and unforgiving of a job it is firsthand. If you have personal contacts with a teams that we would match up with, I'm sure we could arrange a game.

Sincerely,

Shawn Shearer

Mr. shear just because they let you coach and mthis isnt jackson county dont give you the right to think you are the defender of the league! This league has gotton a lot worse yes you are one of the good coaches in this league but the league as a whols has went to hell! It is only natural to defend something you are involved in but if this league had people who knew what they were doing they would be playin eachn other instead of having to play travel ball ! 40 years we had a league here now we have traveling teams so how can you be a feeder program when you only use one schools opinion and you have coaches who mostly are all about their kids?

Reading this thread and I noticed several are not happy, but instead of complaining why not join the Board or maybe coach
and make a change. This league is for the kids of Berea so I would like to see it last so I can watch my son play in 3 years.

My son played for the Berea youth league for 4 yrs. The coaches he had were not the best, he was always about the win instead of teaching the kids that really wanted to play football. The board was not very helpful when a problem was with a coach.

Ok..we all have to admit something is wrong with the Berea youth League...my son played there for 3 years before we cut our losses and moved on to Richmond...yes...when we played in the league there were issues that got bigger and bigger...just like the drama that grew and grew...teams stacked like nothing u have ever seen...where is the competition in handpicking every kid on your team...unless it is an All Team team...The Richmond Predators are team that has try outs every spring...u go...u make it or u don't...u pay a good amount of money...but what do u get in return?? Coaches that know what they r doing..and honestly care about your kids...Coaches that will teach them about football....a team where kids have to earn their playing time..(they are simply not given playing time because of their father/coach...a schedule with 2-3x the number of games that an average MS team plays...coaches that don't tolerate bullying...name calling etc...coaches that build self esteem while they are building a TEAM.....coaches that encourage the boys to be friends not rivals....a place where DRAMA is discouraged not encouraged...in other words...a PLACE kids and parents want to be..! Tearing down Berea's league isn't constructive...I don't know anything about the people in charge this year...but maybe the league needs to examine how a sucessful youth football program works..and go from there..Good luck.....but for me and mine...we are happy Predators!!!

This years league was thrown together quickly and late. It being late and no one knowing caused a lot of kids to go to richmond wich is why there is not really a league. Someone new took over this year with a lot of last years board and coaches you can't judge because he ran a lot of planning into about a month and was still able to let kids play.
Before trashing a mans attempt to fix a broken league give him more time than a few months to fix it. the league has been broke for years so how do you expect a change in 3 months.

To Mitch: I don't know who you are, but I highly doubt you are actually from McKee. I can give you a hundred parent/teacher/principal references as to my behavior and body of work in McKee.

Also, the screen name Mitch, I really hope you aren't making fun of the Mitch McCourter who was a teacher who died of a heart attack a little over a year ago. He was a great man, and if you are that low, then God help you.

Slander is a dangerous thing on the net. I know a little troll like you wouldn't undersand or care about that, but I have been coaching for over 15 years and have had very few complaints as to my behavior or coaching ability.

If you have a beef with me personally, then confront me as a person and not try to slander my name in the worst possible way on the internet.

I feel sorry for the boys. tried to help him from the start and he would not listen to anybody. tried to teach them plays on a high scool level when they are just 9 & 10. and yelled at my son after a 25 yard run because he ran ouside insread of a hole that was closed. then took him off running back and moved him to wide receiver with another player when they had the most experience on the team. he dont know the kids and no experience with them. maybe a board problem not his.

It's not a board problem. It's HIS problem. Everyone is so quick to blame everyone else except for the person who deserves the blame. He is a pathetic coach. He always critical against the kids. Never praises them. Makes them feel like crap.

Shawn is a good coach. Can't you find something else to whine about? Sounds like you're a parent to a misbehaving child. Shawn won't tolerate a kid who won't listen or is disrespectful. He sends them off the field.

Good to the kids my ass. I understand being a good coach and teaching them what needs to be done on the field. But he's the same way to them off the field. He has no respect for the kids or the parents!! Can't wait for the season to be overrr!!
