Roofers, Landscapers, Heating and Cooling, Fencing, General, Etc.

Does anyone know of any good contractors in Berea?
Since I've moved here, I've had problems with so many different ones!
Roofers. I finally ended up working with one, Steve Robinson. However, I felt like was trying to rip me off, if I did not keep an eye on him. And it took him forever to finish the job.(Over a month!) I have a friend who used him also, and the same story applied.(Took a month to finish, quit working after he was paid -- never pay a contractor before he's finished!-- used all Mexican labor who pulled the old we-don't-speak-English trick when she tried to ask them a question, no English-speaking crew supervisor was left on site, Robinson was often off site, and she still has not received the guarantee paperwork on her roof shingles! Her experience has lasted for almost *3 months!*) Now I have a friend who is looking for a roofer and I know he would appreciate some names of good folks.
Heating and cooling - I called Barnett's H&C and never heard back from the guy, so I called him again. His wife said he'd be out to see me. He showed up, for about ten minutes, two days later (after I called to ask why he'd missed an appointment the previous evening, and told me he'd be back the *next day* to have someone write up an estimate for me. That was about *six weeks ago*! I'm tired of calling him, and I don't want to *beg* someone to take my business!
I called Jade Landscaping Services and left a number for them to call me back.(No one ever answers the phone there; you can only leave a message on voicemail.) Evidently, they do not do residential landscaping because no one ever called me back. That was about a month ago. Anyone know a good local landscaper?
How about a good fence company and a good general "handyman" or "handywoman?" Anyone have names?
Any feedback appreciated.

This post should generate some interesting responses. Unfortunately, I don't know any roofers or landscapers, so I'm not much help there. You might try going to Home Lumber and asking for 2 or 3 recommendations there and then interview each contractor. You'll likely find that the good ones are also the busy ones. If a guy can drop everything and see you right now, I'd question why he's so available. Good luck.

Now, plumbers and electricians I do know.

When hiring anyone, please get some references if possible. BBB for example. All contractors must have general liability insurance, Wokers Comp. if they have employees and nearly all trades now require a license as well as continuing education to renew their license.

Do not be afraid to ASK FOR A COPY OF THEIR INSURANCE AND LICENSE! For example, if I do work for you, and I have no Worker Compensation Insurance, and one of my employees is injured on YOUR property, YOU will be liable for their medical expenses.

Also, lets say you hire me to put a roof on your house. We agree on a price and I go get the materials. When I am done, you pay me but I fail to pay the materials supplier, they WILL come after YOU for the money. Eventhough you have already paid for the work.

Lastly, due to the nature of my work, it would be inappropriate for me to mention any contractor, whether good or otherwise. But I encourage you to check credentials and also contact:

That department handles the licensure of building trades, HVAC trades, plumbing and electrical trades.
They can point you in the direction of a licensed person in your area for a given task. Then, when armed with that information, you can contact friends, neighbors, church members etc. for references.

Then, you can narrow your search a bit. Your insurance agent may also be a good resource. Remember, they insure what your contractor is working on. It is in their best interest to protect both your and their liability or asset.

If someone gets "huffy" when you request proof of license and insurance, that IS your key to move on.

Lastly (I know I already said that) PAY NOTHING until the job is done to your saitsfaction or expectations. If a contractor needs money up front, that means the contractor NEEDS MONEY and can't buy materials.

A written contract IS ALWAYS in the best interest of everyone involved and a 24-hour review period should be a given. In court a he-said - she-said means nothing.

Mystic, I feel your pain.

I haven't had very good luck trying to get trades people to my house either. For whatever reason, they would either never call back or never show up for an appointment. It's as though they don't want the business.

I needed to have a special 3-prong type electrical outlet installed for a larger air conditioner and a regular grounded outlet in another room for a smaller one. The one electrician that did show up, didn't do the correct work and never returned my calls when I tried to call them out on it.(They will remain nameless as I believe they are out of business at this point anyway).

I finally gave up on local businesses for household repairs and went with companies from Lexington. They weren't much better, but in an emergency, you'll take anyone that will show up.

Would love to have a list of reputable folks I could call and rely on as needed!

I wonder if any of them would be willing to work on retainer!**lol**

Folks, please don't forget to spay and/or neuter your pets!

I recently used Rhea Oglesby builder for a addition on my home as well as some remodeling work. He as well as his sub-contrators were very prompt and completed the work in a timely manner even though his heavy work load. He and his men did a wonderful job and would be glad to refer him to anyone.....wua

We just remodeled the exterior of our home and we thought we used a reputable company. We checked their work and references. But we got scammed anyway. The salesman from the company decided he could do our job without telling the company he worked for.(This way he would make more money) We did not know about the switch. Then the workers on the crew got mad at the salesman for not paying on time and some other bad decisions and the crew walked off the job. But turns out our contract is with the salesman, not the company! We were stuck! We are now paying for the same jobs again because we have to hire other people to come in and finish! This salesmans name is Wayne Williams and we were told he was representing Cumberland Valley Contracting. I guess even if you check out references you still have to be careful! I think referrals from people you know has got to be the best way to get contractors.

Here is a good story. I needed a/c fixed and called the company I normally use. They did not call me back. I gave them over 2 weeks, kept calling, no one returned my message. So i just got out the phone book and started with the first one. Out of every heat and air co. only one had a person that answered the phone that day. So I scheduled them to come that same afternoon. They called back later and canceled because it was too hot. TOO HOT? YES, THAT IS WHY I NEED MY A?C FIXED!!! So I tried the phone book again. Could not get anyone to answer or return calls. Finally called the first place back and rescheduled them for the next day. They called the next day at 8:00 a.m. and said they had to cancel because it was raining! Give me a break!

If you purchase items from Lowes, Home Depot, Sears and so on, they have installers and warranty their work and products. I've had good luck so far. If I did have a problem, it was corrected in a timely manner. They always answer their phones and/or you can go to the store.

Larry Coffey?? Are you serious?? He is the biggest crook of them all. he is probably too busy scamming the city out of work anyway. He has Randy Stone and Dale VanWinkle in his back pocket and everyone knows it.
