I was at the Berea public library today and as I was walking in I heard a child crying, I looked over and there were two infant car seats and a boy who looked to be about 5 at the oldest. They were in there alone, I thought maybe the mom had just jumped out to drop off a book so I went on in. I looked around to see if I could see any body that looked like they were maybe in a rush, so that I wold know they were hurrying back out. I saw no body I walked back out again to check on the children and they were still there, so finally after about 20 mins I went and told the lady at the front desk and she called the cops. I watched and waited in the parking lot and right about the time a cop pulled in the woman was walking to her van. I had seen her inside and seen that she had been on the computer, and faxing papers, but not worrying about her kids. Well anyways I sat and watched while the cop talked to her for maybe two mins, and let her drive off, with the children. He did not question any body, just let her go. I couldn't believe that, I was so mad! How could they let her go? What kind of cops allow this to happen?

I'm not saying anything that bad about the cops, b/c I know some of them and most of them are really nice. I know, I've dealt with them. But what I am saying is that this right here is crazy, idk the cop but if I did I would call and complain on him b/c this is total bullsh*t. This woman does not need children, I just feel bad that I didn't just call the cops myself right away. I should have.

Your right! You should have just called the cops right away. I know because I ran into a similar situation at Shell Mart a couple years ago and just as you did, I did. Same thing happened then too. The cop only spoke to the person briefly and then let her go. What a shame! If I had to do over, I would have called the State Police right away and had them handle it because Berea cops are totally incompetent.

Just curious if you would have been the cops what actions would you have taken?

I would think getting social services involved would be in the best interest of the children.

I can't really see any reason what so ever to call the cops or social services. Looks like a bunch of people sticking noses in places that don't belong. It wasn't in the heat of summer, and it wasn't cold.
I remember when I was a kid, you could go to the parking lot of ANY grocery store and there would be 10 kids sitting in cars while the parent was inside for an hour.(1960's) The kid would be playing or even get other kids to play in the parking lot unsupervised. We all made it.
Obviously the cops also thought this wasn't wrong or he would have done something.
I have kids, many times I have ran into the store with them in the car, when they were small, we have all done it

Get a life, quit trying to watch what everyone else is doing

You have got to be kidding me w/ this.
Did you go outside yesterday? And if you did I bet you wore a jacket. Yes it was cold outside, and I don't care what your parents done to you in the sixties, that was crazy just as it's still crazy today. Did you hear about that mom in FL that left her baby in the car and the car got stolen, the guy that stole the car wrecked and the baby was killed. they charged the mom for manslaughter, the same thing cold have happened here. Or what about the people just last week that left their baby in the parking lot at Kohls, they were taken to jail. This woman should have been taken too, I can't believe you are taking up for this woman! One of the babies was so young that it's car seat was still turned around backwards. The little boy could've given the babies something and made them get choked or he could've gotten out of the van and ran into the street, you were not there.I work at a daycare and I see abuse all the time, so I know when to call people, who's to say that if she ignored them in public what she does to them at home? And yes, when it comes to child endangerment it is everybody's business!

For one....I would never wait on the mother to come out of the store again. I would just call the cops immediately so that they could see how long the children were alone in the vehicle.
Secondly, times have changed and its not the same world as it was in the sixties, seventies or eighties. There are plenty of ppl who would kidnap a child and use them for bad purposes. Do you not ever hear the news anymore?
But to answer your question, If I had been the cop I would have not just taken a parents word because of course they are not going to tell you they were in the store for twenty to thirty minutes.
I would have ask witness' and possibly even had the store pull the video cameras so that we could get the real truth of the story.
When I did come to the conclusion, I would have called social services and had them come and take the children into custody until we could get the parents to understand that you cannot leave small children in a vehicle by their self any amount of time.
The parents would need to take parenting classes so that they could see the real dangers of children being left alone in a vehicle. Not only could they be kidnapped and mistreated but they could die from exposure in a vehicle alone. They also could have started the vehicle and pulled it out of gear and ran out in front of someone or possible hit one of the gas pumps and blew themselves and others up.
If it takes someone having to explain to you why it is dangerous to leave small children in a vehicle alone, then you are the very person that would benefit from taking those parenting classes.
In the summer it is too hot to leave children alone in a vehicle and in the winter it is too cold and anytime you leave children unattended in a vehicle it is dangerous no matter what season it is. Evidently, you could benefit from some parenting classes!
The police need to address this issue in the proper manner!

Your right I wasn't there, but I can't count the times I have seen things that were questionable. It's ultimately the parents choice on what they want to do with there own children. Just like everyting in life, mind your own business. I don't care what religion/color/parenting you want to do, it's a persons own choice. I don't care if you are christian, muslim, or want to worship the devil, it's your own choice, not mine.(just an example)

I love telling true stories..so here is one for you baby...

A few yrs ago, I was having some problems with my teenage daughter (backtalking, smart mouth, cussing, attitude, typical teenager.) I had already had sat her down and had talks with her, and had grounded her on several occasions, she spent the better part of one summer away from phones, tv, and friends already. One morning, we had stopped at McDonalds for breakfast, and she was upset that I didn't stop at the place she had picked, so she started mouthing, smartmouth remarks, and cussing. I decided this was enough and had told her to shut up several times. She continued....So when we got out of the car,(her still smart mouthing and attitude) I grabbed her by the hair and pushed her against the car, stuck my finger in her face and started screaming I had enough. Someone beside us got out of the car (not minding his own business) got in my face and we ended up on the ground with my hands around his throat, and was eventually broken up by management, he drove off. Ya know...since that day...I don't have much problem with my teenage daughter.

Some people like the ones who post under the name true...want everyone to take a class and think that will solve everything. Take a class and do it like everyone else "THINKS" you should do it.
The world famour Dr Spock who wrote numerous books about child behavior and "How to books" on raising children was a complete failure, his own son commited suicide. He had many followers and was for a while considered "the man with the plan"

In my opinion...That's what is wrong with todays parents, and what leads to what is wrong with today's youth, which leads what is wrong with today's world.

In my yrs, I have seen kids in cars in parking lots, I have seen kids playing in the street, I have seen kids drinking underage, I have seen kids buy and sell drugs, I have seen kids break the law, I have seen kids fight, I have seen kids steal, I have seen kids having sex, I have seen kids smoking, I have seen kids out and I know they were up to no good. And I have always kept to my own business, some people need to learn this.

Raise your kids the way you want them raised, not how the neighbors tell you how to raise them. Mind your own business in each and every aspect. I don't care how you raise yours, I don't care what religion you have, I don't care about one single thing in anyone else lives. I have enough to take care of in my own family

If you think I will let the children I brought into this world spit in my face, tell me to go to hell because I didn't buy them this, get them that, or let them get away with whatever they want then you are seriously mistaken. I grew up in a world where the parents are in charge, the adults have the say and if you backtalk me or sass me one more time you will be pickin your wet behind the eared ass up of the floor. Do you understand me. My children behave like angels because they know they won't get away with it. People ask me how I get my kids to be so well behaved and respectful. I taught them right from wrong and what is acceptable since they were born. If you never put rules in place they won't work later on down the road. Spock is full of shit. You don't have to let your kids be the boss or beat the hell out them to get them to behave. Its called parenting and obviously some of you don't know how to do it properly. Example... the lady I met in the Walmart 5 years ago and her kid screaming at the top of his lungs for something she really can't afford. She was ready to bawl. It took only look and a firm, "Enough, No means no. Your mother is the boss not you. You are only a child. Now shut it." from me and that kid never said another word the whole time. Did the Mom get mad... Hell no she thanked me twice and we have become good friends over the years. Her kid is now 16 and very sweet and respectable just like my kids. Put you foot down and be parents people. Its ok to be fun Mom but its also ok to be Parent Mom. They will love you regardless and treat you and others better.

So you know how laws work in ky and In Madison co? Just a food for thought here. Few years ago the cops came across a small child locked up in a van with all the windows rolled up. It was the summer when it was like 100 deg out side. They arrested the women. It was the child's grandmother. She goes before one of the Madison co judges and it was dismissed by that judge due to no law covering this type of situation. So what do you think about that?
