So I hear that there is finally a new director for the youth league at Berea. Does anyone know if this is true? If so what is the league like this year? I hope it is better then in the past. I would like to bring my kid back because Southern Madison is way too expensive. Just curious about the direction of the league.

Best it's been in years!!! They have a new director and assistant director. They seem to work as a team. Seems maybe the assistant does more than the director, but I think it's because the director serves in the military on some weekends. They had more players than they have had in many years maybe ever. Looks like these guys know what they are doing and are taking things in the right direction! I'm letting mine play again there next year. My kids have played at both Berea and Southern and this year was the best experience yet. I urge anyone to let their kids play at the Berea league. Good job guys!!

Does anybody know what the age limits are? Also when and where do you sign up at?

From what I can tell you, this is the best this league has been in years! The numbers have increased. I have to say that I have never seen so many kids in this league. The director and assistant director do work as a team together. I think that the director is in the military and that the assistant director is there when he is not. My son played in the rookie division and my little girl cheered and I have to disagree with you in saying that the assistant director does more. Not that he doesn't do his part, but there have been numerous occasions where I have seen the director stay there from the first game to the very last game. Seems this guy has put in long hours and you can see that it has paid off. Great season. I know that we can't wait until next year!
I also think the age divisions are K-2, 3-5, 6-8. I got a letter from school and a one call about it and I think that was early october....not sure.

Yes and that was a shame for all the kids to see!! The director had several chances to put a stop to this early in the day and chose not to call the police and have them removed from the parking lot. According to public records this guy had been arrested for domestic violence in Dec. right before the games started. People needs to know who is coaching their kids!!! And parents need to know that if something does flare up that the director will be on top of things and call the police to assure our children will be safe. If the police had come there when this first started I assure u that he would not of set out there in the parking lot and kept steaming all day!!! Especially with domestic violence charged in Dec, I.m sure the police could of cooled this off real quick. But I.m sure the kids will keep this bloody scene in their minds for along time. What a shame.. I,ve seen ref's call bad calls several times and never saw anything like this happen(not saying the ref made a bad) but also never seen a ref band from school because someone chose to use violence on him. I heard that the atelitic director said that she would be taking the league away from the current director because of this ,not only is he not experineced to know how to handle bad situations he was told by several people to get the guy out of the parking lot and he chose not to listen. I heard one lady tell him,he needs to be out of the parking lot before something bad happens. So we will see if she stands by her word. I think so far she has done a wonderful job! You just can't have this stuff going on around kids and also I would think the school could be held responsible.

Toshiba....sad to see your incorrect information. While I will agree with you that this should have never happened, both parties were asked to leave. The gentlemen that you refer to who was told to leave the parking lot, even was told that if he came back the police would be called. Your statement says I heard someone say this and someone say that...did you hear any of it for yourself....seems not. From what I can tell you....the league will be back next year at BCS and the director will still be there. As for inexperienced....this individual did what was needed and did it correctly. Do I think the police should have been called sooner... yes...why were they not called sooner...seems he was trying to defuse a situation without getting the police involved, as from my memory, he has some police knowledge under his belt, as that it what he does in the military, I've gotten that information from his brother. I have also been informed that the committee will be conducting back ground checks on all coaches next year and on anyone who is involved. The league handled the aftermath of this in a professional way and in a way that only proves we have the right individuals where they need to be. Seems to me that you are a made parent or maybe know the ref who was attacked. Should he be banned...no...however the director made it clear that he did not want either back because that could cause more problems to arise. While I agree with some of your statements, I disagree with other. However, we are all entitled to our opinions.

Roy ,as you are intitled to think and say what you like! But everyone knows the rules when at school and aroung our kids. This guy sit in the parking lot for hours, then came back in on the floor in the middle of a game while the referree was doing another game. If both parties had been told to leave ,why was that ref. doing a game after this had done happen hours before? when he came bck on the floor in front of our children and yelled " I'll break your f--- neck. 3 or 4 men got ahold of him and took him out and he still did not leave. And the ref was not ask to leave! Thats a fact. When did it ever get that when someone jumped on a ref ,the ref had to leave. The way it has always been the ref throws people out when they get out of hand..I do know this first hand ,I was there. And I don't know about Toshiba ,but I do have this first hand . I saw it all! The police should of been called,so inexperience om the directors part. And I also heard he would not be director next year,so we will just have to wait and see. If he is director serveral kids I know want be playing. This was a serious thing to happen in front of any child. Seems you have heard your inf. second hand. Just my opinion.

Yep there is a #,Its in the book!!!!! Where did you get from the post above that anyone got a letter???? Think it said it was heard!!! You must be confused with the letter you must of got with all the info you got from his brother. All that experience he has in the military and that police knowledge you say he has ,he should of know to call the police when he didn't leave the parking lot the first time.I know no police that apeases with anyone to defuse a situation. As if that has anything to do with it.He has very little experience at anything, hes what not over 25 hisself.Experienced police knows who in the town that has been arrested with dem. violence and they get ahold of the situation real quick.Because they relize in those situations someone can be hurt or killed quickly and they don't fool around when little children is at stake. If it had not been for Tracys brother who does have police experience things could of been alot worse. He defused the siyuation real quick and from what I was told when he had the boy down he ask for someone to call police and still noone offered to. So he held him with one hand and called the police with the other. Give credit were it is deserved. And it don't go to the directer who had several chances to call the police and chose not to for what ever reason. Just because he is in the military don't mean he was to defuse a situation. Thats the police 's job who does have experience.

I was looking into enrolling my son in this league. Man sitting in parking lot to break a refs ******* neck... Sounds great, NOT! I think you people might want to refrain from all the negativity if your looking to keep the league around. No backgrounds check were done previously!!! Sounds like noone is running this show.

PROMISE i WOULDNT STRAY YOU AWAY,BUT ITS THE SAFTY FOR YOUR CHILDRENS THAT MATTERS,RIGHT

Amazed.....you're better off going to Richmond and trying to get into the Upward program. Both the leagues in Berea don't offer much positives for the kids. The SMYBL is, and has been run by a couple of Boss Hogs for several years, and they are all about coaches rivalrys instead of being about developing kids. Also, they used to fund raise all the time, and charge high fees, and they say it's because they pay for gym time when in fact, they've never had to pay for gym time. I've always wondered what all the money was spent on....and why they've stayed so long. The Berea league used to be a decent alternative. It was much smaller and not as competitive. But they don't do background checks on coaches, and the new guy running the league brought in alot of undesirable people. I heard his brother (who coached a team) in the stands bragging about how he was teaching his players to play dirty and hurt other kids. He also let a couple of people coach who had previously been banned from the league. I thought the school was going to take it over after what happened last year, but appearently they aren't. My kid played in the Berea league last year and after what I saw I'd never take my kid back there. It's a shame we just can't have an affordable league that is about the kids having fun and learning the game.

Just to add....the league is doing background checks this year. Just got the form yesterday. They are also having certified officials. A more extensive approach is being used and certain coaches are ban this year. With the exception of what happened last year, this has been the best that the league has been! Mr. Dad, I completely disagree with you. The league at Berea is one that cares for their participants. Alot of changes have taken place to prevent what happened last year. I do agree it was a shame and hope it never happens again, but you can see that the board has made sure that it is prevented in the future. Just my opinion. Amazed...if you have concerns or questions...call the director! He is approachable and can answer any questions you have. Don't judge it because of what you hear. My child will be going back. I am sure someone will have their opinion to say, but I just wanted to express mine.

Hi... Well I am now totally confused. We just moved here so I'm not sure "what happened last season to the ref" but whatever it was "it" has gotten allot of publicity.
So... Where do I put my 1st grader? Decisions decisions.

Put him where you feel comfortable. The Berea league did have a mishap last year, but have fixed things. The Southern Madison league is corrupt as any of them. Each has its own plus/minus. My child plays in the Berea league and there are many stories about what happened. It differs depending on who you talk to. Im actually tired of hearing about it. I have put it in the past and wish others would too, but as we know some like to dewell on things for a long time. Check each out, call each director. Do your research on each.

regardless of which league u choose for your kid, why would anyone take their kid to southern to play sports over berea? Berea has closed the gap on southern with a MUCH smaller talent pool....they have actually beaten southern in nearly all sports lately. they dont play in football, but it's not like either school is doin much in that regard. It's a simple case of underachievers vs overachievers
