I got to meet Mr Sam, that's how old of an assoc I am, and he promised me, if I kept myself conservative, worked like a dog, kept my finances in order, and generally lived life as he did, he would reward that hard work with a living wage, a good retirement, a piece of the company as thanks.

Mr. Sam set items into place, like time and a 1/2 overtime on sundays and for overtime. He did this to thank the associate that gave up Church time, to work on Sundays. Now, if you try to change your schedule to compensate for church, they give you such awful hours the rest of the week, that you NEVER see your family. That makes everyone work any hours given them, and not complain. It's called "Intimidation Management"

I know how good Walmart's statement sounded on wages, but let's take a look and break down the spin.

If you received an 'above standard' on an annual evaluation two years ago, you could earn a 6% raise.

They killed that one, and reduced it to a flat-cent raise. That would prevent anyone with tenure, from earning too much.

Today, they announce that they've increased the cent raise for 'above standard'...from 55 to 60 cents per year.

They will combat that with NEVER allowing an associate to get that high of a score on an evaluation.(still look good?)In other words, yea, it's there, but you will never be allowed to achieve it.

As far as the overtime pay, If you earn it, they make you take it off. For instance, if they make you stay till midnight on Thursday night, which by week end would net you an extra 6 hours of pay....on Friday, they cut you to a two hour day. You log in at 40 hours or under...no overtime!(isnt that neat?)

they also put out to management, that anyone making time and a half (which was grandfathered to the long term assoc's)could NEVER work another Sunday!

The statement today is their spin on what they really did do, and that was cap the wages. Of course, they won't tell you OR the associates what those caps are. Promised that it would be on our benefits web page, but it's not.

The official spin on it was that "it is competitive in many regions" but what they are not saying, is those regions are in the Ukraine.

If you make it long enough to make a whopping $13.00 per hour. you will never receive another raise....not cost of living.... NOTHING!

*the spin* you can move up to a higher level of service, and then get paid more!

Nope, the other phase they didn't tell you was coming, was that they are reducing the number of 'lead' positions, drastically. There won't be many positions to move up to.

The whole move may make the common man believe that this will keep the company alive, but in essence, it's forcing those of us that took the promise to Mr Sam, to quit.

They have their ways, and they will clear out all the 20 yr plus associates the first year. Think of all the money that will save! Mr Scott can get another new, big engined car!

Or maybe, they will be able to continue to pay out BIGGER severances to Home Office Personel, who constantly are ripping us off! "Embezzler in Bentonville" is the position you want to strive for. You have it all, and steal some more, and are REWARDED FOR IT!

Mr Scott, you need to clean your own house, before you come and yank food out of the mouths of the poor stiffs that bought that house for you. For Shame! You are posting 5 times the salary that Mr. Glass did.. And you are capping US??? Are YOUR children on STATE MEDICAL FOR THE WORKING POOR???
I doubt it.

I feel like such a boob, believing in Mr Sam then, and watching how the legal eagles at the New Home Office are finding ways to get around everything Mr. Sam promised us.

Given the current market, there isn't much out there for an old person, who was dumb enough to believe in the dream, make it happen for the company, and gets left holding onto nothing but the short end of the stick.

I to am a long time Wal-Mart associate. I agree in what you said 100%. Wal-Mart did this to clean house of all their long term associates. Once a associate reaches their top pay in their level, they will never, never get another get another raise!! There will not be a annual raise at their evaluation time. There will no longer be merit increases. There will be nothing!! Why should we do a great job for a company that doesn't care about us. I hope that all the associates and everyone that shops at Wal-Mart realizes that Wal-Mart has done!! There isn't anything special about Wal-Mart anymore. It is just another big business trying to screw the little guy!!!

Sam said that we all can grow together, the company and associates. Well that promise is now broken and we are being left behind. And the word associate does not have the same meaning as it used to as now it might as well say employee. Store bonus are hardly ever met under these new guide lines and stock prices are constantly dropping with all the building of new stores and we have no say in anything anymore. I came home this morning after finding out these new plans just feeling left behind.

I been with Wal-Mart less then two years, in those months, I have watched all the changes occur.

I didn't join Wal-Mart because I wanted to, I did so because I needed a job, and quickly. They offered, I accepted, it was either that or waitressing.

Now I have to wonder. Since I been there, I have become more outspoken, more fed up, and downright disgusted on watching how they treat thier associates.

They started off a few months ago by quitting in hiring full time. Then they went to a "new schedule" that was suppose to be done by home office by people that have not a clue what really takes place on the salesfloor.

And now this.....

I have watched how they get away with hiring a person as part-time, and working them full-time, only rushing back to the computer to change it when it logs the poor people as full time workers, so they can't get benefits. I have watched them practically shove a person to the time-clock to clock out early because they had overtime, which they would not have had if they got the cashiers off the registers on time, or left the salesfloor associates alone long enough to the actual job they were hired to do.

I have watched them have an elderly man push carts this past summer, who passed out due to the heat because lo and behold, there weren't any cartpushers..and mangement likes to vanish when things need to be done.

I have never saw a bonus, and never likely will, for one of the reasons a bonus was withheld was due to shrinkage, they watch the employees like hawks, making us feel like thiefs, and yet, customers can walk past stuffing thier faces with food not paid for.

And now this....why I am or was suprised is beyond me. I should have seen the signs, and I knew something was up when they started to "make" excuses so you didn't get full raises. Which by the way, I have had a manager tell me that they HAVE to write something "bad" on your evaluation.

Thier so called reason for doing this was so that people could be moved up to managment levels, which, they even make that hard to do if you happen to be a fool that even wants that position. I don't.

So yes, you can top out, BUT, if however your maxed out, be prepared, for if you do not want to move up, that next eval will say due to lack of productivity...guess what, that is right!, they can now downgrade you to a level of a cartpusher!

I have always said that they will one day get to big , and will topple, at the rate they are going, I may just see it.

And as I have told a manager, I'll lmao.

Sadly, I, like many other associates need our jobs, not because we want to work there, but because right now, in an economy which is fastly getting more expensive to live in, with the price of gas sky-rocketing, we are basically stuck.

People have the impression that only idiots work at wal-mart...but they better rethink that thought, I know a few collage degreed people that work there because in the real world, they don't want a blind person in thier business.

We are there because it is a job, and darnit, I see so many people that work there butts off to please that unpleaseable customer for a company that treats us like garbage.

Then customers wonder why we are grouchy....

One day, I may just tell them.

I have been at WalMart for over2 years and have seen many changes most of them are not for the better either.I work 34 to 36 hours a week and I am considered peak time [part time] I never seem to be in the right hourly bracket to get any of the descent benefits when I asked about it all I get is they will check into it they never get back to me.Recently I have been off work for a back problem and do you think they would help me any financially? NO I'm not eligable for any short term disability pay because I'm not full time but I work full time hours thats so all their managers, dept managers and butt kissers can get their way.Would'nt want to step on any bodys toes especially managemant.Who by way the sit on their butts in the office and can never be found in crisis.

What you're witnessing here is the implementation of the general principles set forth in the Cambers Memo.

Wal-Mart is currently in the process of weeding out tenured associates in favor of lower-wage new hires. Meanwhile Bentonville is attempting to achieve a ratio of 65% paret time to 35% full time.

I was capped after 17 years and felt as you do. I don't blame Sam at all, but I did redistribute my stock in my profit sharing 2 years ago so I own nothing in wm as I could see they were going down and now I think it will be faster rather than slower, judging on what I see in my department and store. You can move your stock around to other things so you won't be left with nothing when you retire... check it out... I am getting out of the company as soon as I can find other work. I am old too and it is hard I loved that company.

after 15 years with walmart this week i can no longer defend them. over the years there have been many changes that i didnt agree with but ithought they were necessary for the company. the new salary caps are nothing more than a slap in the face to long term associates. because i have worked hard all of my years at walmart and received above standard evaluations and merit raises i can no longer receive any type of raise. i will still be evaluated every year but my reward for doing a good job will be nothing. really makes you want to do a good job right? when productivity drops and customer service declines maybe those idiots in bentonville will figure it out.

Sounds like Walmart is a few years behind others in implementing these tactics. I have not had a cost of living raise in several years, my benefit costs have jumped 200%, we have constant turnover due to the demands that are put on workers, Mgmnt. is told how to schedule and NO O.T. as well as what and where to merchandise.
Along with this, goals have been established that include Only one person per store "Qualifies to be "Above Ave." on reviews and (while there is "exceptional" listed on the review) there are NO overall exceptional associates in any store. Promotion goals put the % very high for females and miniorities and on the bottom for anglo males instead of qualifications and experience.
Things like these have been happening for years and since Texas is the only place our company is not Unionized guess who was called upon to bail them out in California a few years ago...?

i am a 11yr associate with walmart, i am 1 raise from my cap. walmart used to be a great company to work for, not anymore. it's a shame that they dont see what they are doing to themselfs. i watched a report on cnn, the other day and these to dist. mgr's who are still working for walmart said that walmart will be filing for chapter 13 in 10yrs or less at this rate. i saw on the wire about a month ago that all div. 1 stores that cant be turned into supercenter's by 2008, WILL BE CLOSED. my store has 23 dept.mgr's, next yr we will be a supercenter. they are only keeping "5" dept. mgr's for the whole store. that is just crazy. im not even mad anymore, im digusted. i will be leaving walmart in oct. i want out before im forced out and not with out a leg to stand on. and before i go . THANK YOU WALMART FOR FAILING YOUR DEDICATITED LONGTERM ASSOICATE'S & CUSTOMER'S.

This is true, as long as they get their pockets lined why do they care about the associates that have given them the best years of their life. I am an associate of 21 yrs wanting to get out of Wal-Mart, but they don't contibute much to the retirement. Don't worry they have never overpaid anyone.

Well, Mr. Sam has been dead for a while and his kid took over. Profits are soaring, but the family-friendly atmosphere went downhill. Walmart now treats their employees like gum on the bottom of their shoes. BTW, Target also has problems with their employee benefits program and the way they treat their employees...you just don't hear about it because Walmart is the largest retailer in the world and is the second largest corporation behind Exxon. It is the private employer in the US and Mexico, and is also the largest grocery and toy seller in the US and Mexico. So, because it is all these things, it can get away with all it does. The government has closed its eyes to Walmart's behavior because their profits line their pockets as well.

I totally agree with you. I've seen them do some of the same things your talking about in my store. Pushing people to the time clock because they had a little overtime, sometimes making them take a long lunch hour instead of taking it off at the end of the day. We hardly ever get our bonus because they always can manipulate the numbers or come up with all the reasons why we don't get one. I see thousands of dollars come out of my profit sharing account for what?
Management can be very tricky. They get you to take a certain position on a trial basis then say oh well we filled your previous position so you get stuck doing something you hate and a pay cut.
There's a guy that's been there for 3 years makes the same as me-I've been there 16 years!- He's in the same job pay level. But all I've been thru, All the hard work for what? He makes the same as me.
I work there because I am a single mother with 3 kids. I needed the paycheck or I would have quit a long time ago.
Oh yeah, thanks to walmart keeping me below the poverty level all these years I have qualified for some government programs.
