I know of a man who contracted Legionnaires disease because he was running his water heater at a lower temperature when he wasn't at home, to save a few dollars. The lowered water temperature provided a breeding ground for the disease. After he was diagnosed they found that his water heater was filled with the bacteria. He's an older gentleman but was in good health before this. It almost killed him. Here's information from OSHA about the problem.

Thank you for that! That's something I'd never thought about but it certainly makes sense especially after reading your link.
