I was just wondering if this was legal or not?(To play a Varsity player on a sophmore team). I guess I'm really not understanding WHY they call it a 'Freshman" team & " Sophmore" team, when its actually mixed.

Not Understanding: My son hasnot complained either, but I can see the disappointment on his face. He has only played 1 min. 46 sec. thats it!

Just like last year!!! Now you guys know what it feels like to have the underclassmen shoved down your throat....and I am not saying it is your fault, that is just how it is.

Maybe it is not the head coach, maybe the trouble is with the coaches under him, they are all from Benton and know which names to play.

Is it possible some of these assistant coaches help coach, so that their underclassmen sons can be moved up to varisty? HECK YES!!!

I am not completely blaming the head coach. I think he came to town, not knowing very many people, let alone the personalities and abilities of the players. I think that he got caught up with some people that have pushed their sons, brother-in-laws, etc. on him. Does he think that these particular asst. coaches are going to stick around after their family members are gone from school? I would think not. They will drop him like a hot potatoe. By then, it will be too late for him to realize he was being 'played'.

I heard two Seniors quit last night. Two that have played since their Freshmen year. Pretty good players at that....
I wonder how many more are going to give it up?!

Why are they quitting? Is it because they are playing mixed teams or because they arent getting any playing time? or is it because they are losing.

Not getting to play, coach more worried about building for the future, etc. The guy has pretty much given up on this varsity team. Honestly, I think he gave up after the Nashville game!

I heard that today too! One of my friends has a son who is a senior on the football team, she said when she heard some other seniors were wanting to quit, she begged her son to stick with it, at least until after Homecoming/Senior night (Oct. 5th). She said none of her kids have ever quit anything, but she wouldn't be surprised if he came home and told her he was done, that there's way more to life than sitting the pine (or standing on the sidelines).
Why doesn't this coach enlist the help of former football players? All of these boys playing probably would like that, and would learn something from it. These kids grew up in Benton, spending many Friday nights, and Saturday afternoon playoff games watching the teams of the 90's play. Most of the kids on this team looked up to those like Jason Harvey, Summary twins, Alec Wissinger, Ray Minor, Andrew Kim, Buddy Elders, Justin Groves, Jesse Crawford, Casey McCommons, I could go on....A lot can be learned from someone who has actually BEEN on a team that excelled, wouldn't you think?

I believe the IHSA does allow Jrs. to play in a soph game, they can still call it JV. However, Seniors can't play anything but varisty. Why would a coach want to do that?
When these seniors were freshman (coached by Robin LaBuwi & Matt Morris), they went 6-3 and were co-conference champs. As sophomores,(coached by Mark Harben and Robbie Blondi) they went 8-1.

Well I'm sorry to say this but, I'm glad my son isnt the only one sitting on the sidelines.

I wouldnt blame my son if he wanted to quit nor would I encourage it. I've always instilled in my kids to finish what they started.
This may be the last year he plays and I hate it.
These kids start practicing in the summer, make all the practices, which is hard work and then get treated like this....

And when these boys have graduated, they will be left with the ones they didnt play... doesnt make muck sense to me... But I'm glad that they arent doing anything illegal....

The IHSA stays on top of things all the time. Nothing, well not for very long, gets past them.

I didn't read your comment to the fullest, sorry.
Yes, they will be left with the ones that they didn't play and they will want those kids to pick up the slack. In the Nashville/Benton game I went to, the kids I have watched play for the three previous years, were not getting much action. In the last 5 minutes, these particular kids got to play, and some of them racked up more yards than the ones who had started and played almost the entire game....IN 5 MINUTES OR LESS! I mean REALLY....HELLO COACH....WHAT'S THE DEAL????? But then he went with the same kids starting at Sparta? P'ville (minus a few injured ones), and WF (Minus a few more injured).
Like I said before, I open my Saturday paper, and I wonder where these guys who use to do good are, where are their stats? Crawford, Nolen, Knight, Jones, Kays'(Ad & Ar), Britton, Jamerson, Romani, Smith, Seddon, Scott, Short, Volini, Duncan. In short, my opinion is, they are all good players! Its like Jamerson has glue for fingers! He can catch anything thrown his way, Nolen and Crawford can carry the ball (It would help if someone who was in he game was actually BLOCKING for these guys!?!) Kays' have quickness & a lot of speed, Duncan is a huge target....throw to him, Romani & Knight can snap a ball very well, all of the other above guys can block and tackle...put them in. Jones, Smith, Seddon & Britton have decided not to play any longer. I do disrespect them for their decision, I mean my GOSH....who can blame them! I don't call them quitters, their coaching staff quit on them!

Skylor, I am not going to tell you who I am until after football is done, for the mere fact, that I don't want my son to pay the price for what I have to say.
I have sat back, and read this board, not really wanting to get involved....until now!(I also wonder where this post is going to say I am from....hopefully some place nice like Hawaii!!!)
Anyway.....I know of the disappointment EVERYONE if dealing with. I have watched these seniors for the last 3 years and 4 games. You guys are good, deserve the playing time, the sophomores will have their time next year and the year after. This entire situation is insane! Your coach is not a bad person, he is just listening to some of the assistant coaches and THEIR family members to insure those particular kids get to play and they ARE SCREWING YOUR TEAM OVER!!!!
I almost think I it would be funny if you guys walked across the field on Senior night with their parents, participated in Homecoming festivities, and then turned your equipment in the following Monday!

This is not a good situation.....I can't believe that a coach would give up after one game. Maybe they should take a look at who else is on the sidelines and go from there.

I heard at a freshmen game that some of the senior parents were begging their kids to quit the team because of the embarrassment. That is not the answer either, these kids should not be taught to quit if something is not going the way they think it should and the parents shouldn't condone quitting either. It is a real shame that this is happening again but that's life and this is not going to be the last diasappoinment they are going to face, it is just the important one right now and it is hard to swallow.

I think if the coach would not listen to the new assistants and make up his own mind, it might have a different outcome.
