There are a lot of high school football fans in Benton who enjoy the other local programs, including Sesser. Sesser has been on top of the heap the last few years, so they are the ones sparking interest right now. Benton's time should be coming, but they have to prove it on the field.
I hope you are right about that. Healthy competition is good, pinning the coaches against each other and using the players to do it is not good.

I love Benton football no matter if they win or lose. My son played 1 year varsity for Roper and 2 years varsity for Clod. My son also had LaBuwi as a coach throughout the years starting with Little League Baseball. LaBuwi was out to further his own son, Roper had the respect of his team, and Clod was just playing the kids with dad's willing to help coach. My son went on to college with a full scholarship based on his grades. I am afraid all these players....Leffler, Smith, Garrett, Allen, etc..., are going to have a real disappointment in Clod once they are done with high school & figure out they are going no where to play college football and might figure out they won't get to play any sport in college. Clod doesn't keep control of his players and he sure doesn't teach them discipline. Sorry folks, but your high school board screwed you all.

I agree 95% of with what you say and you are dead on. These kids are going to realize the world is not all about them once they graduate and get out into the real world. Roper might have been harsh in his manerisms, many people have a different word for it, but he transformed us from boys to men in a sense. He taught us responsiblity and discipline, which a lot of my teammates didn't get at home. You had to grow up a little bit to play for Coach Roper. However I still say Coach Labuwi put a lot of time into the program before his boy got to high school, and I'm just speaking from a football standpoint, I never dealt with him in Little League or baseball at all for that matter. He seemed like a pretty fair guy around the football field though.

Actually i seem to remember Leffler saying something about kicking peoples asses. When I played (which wasn't that long ago) our coaches would have had us paying in sweat and vomit for this internet bullshit. And no I didn't play for Benton, and yes I was the quarterback for my football team. That meant being a leader, and leading by example. Representing a town and the players on the football team, and also representing the coaches that coached me.

And I wasn't taking Sesser's side, just merely stating facts that Benton hasn't even been able to hold Sesser's jock in athletics the past 3 years.

Neutral...did you actually watch Benton play Sesser at the BIT the past 2 years and did you watch Benton play Sesser in 7 on 7 a couple of weeks ago (the closest thing to a footbal game the 2 teams have played against each other)? If you had, you might realize Sesser HAS NOT had success against the Rangers the past 2 years.

Because a 7 on 7 match determines how the game would turn out in the regular season..didn't WF do decent at 7 on 7 tournaments over the past 2 or 3 years?

Let's go back and hit on the integrity of Clodfelder for a minute. A few years ago, his first year as head coach, there was a gold card rush, much like the ones Roper used to have only Clodfelder decided he had another method of doing it. While all the other coaches, players, and volunteers went out and tried to sell the cards to support the team, Clodfelder decided to take a little trip with Don Montgomery down to Donna's Sweetwater Saloon. Upon returning, it was very apparent that Clodfelder had enjoyed more than his fair share of adult beverages while everyone else was out selling the cards and trying to make a difference in the program. Clodfelder however returned to collect the money from the gold card rush and interracted with the kids. So I ask you, does this sound like a man who instills discipline and sets an example for the young men who are the future of our community?

Sesser has never won more than one game in the playoffs. The furthest they've been is the second round. Yippee!

Another thing, they play in the Black Diamond. Congratulations, you can go 8-1, or even 9-0, and lose in the first round. Something to thump your chest about....okay, not really. Look what you get, you get Elverado, Christopher Z-R, and Vienna. Hell you only have to win two more games outside of that.

Benton plays in the SIRR-Ohio, the conference schedule is down right brutal. You have past state champions in Carterville, Harrisburg, and Anna-Jonesboro. Herrin has been to the Semi-Finals once, in 2004.

I truly wish Benton would make the playoffs by the skin of their teeth at 6-3 (5-4 will not get them in due to playoff points) and Sesser goes 8-1 or 9-0 (or they both go 7-2). If the records play out like that, you will likely see these two teams meet in the first round. Oh, how sweet it would be to ride into Northeastern Franklin County and completely lay the smack down on those Red Devils.

As if Nashville hasn't taught them anything the past two year, Benton will truly show them how football is played in the River-to-River.

Your first statement is incorrect. Off the top of my head I know of at least one year Sesser won at least two playoff games when they lost in either the quarter or semis against Greenfield.
Secondly, Sesser plays against the schedule put in front of them, just as the Rangers do. You mention Elverado and Vienna, but fail to note that the Rangers'schedule includes Sparta, Pinckneyville, and lately a pitiful Frankfort squad.
As far as the Nashville games go, I was at that one, and Sesser gave them a MUCH better game than the Rangers could muster.

Sesser might not have won a game, but they've at least been there since 2002. And another thing, you obviously didn't go to the nashville vs. sesser playoff games because if you did, you would know Nashville pulled it off by the skin of their teeth. If you want to get really technical about it, Benton dropped Nashville and picked up a former BDC team in Carterville. I'm not sure what it is that Nashville has taught them, other than would a good playoff game is supposed to be like. So I hope you're right, but I doubt you are. I'd love to see a Franklin County at home. I'm just glad that you realized that the Rangers will have to travel to Sesser because they will have the better record.

I stand corrected. That Quarterfinals game was when, 92-93? Almost 20 years ago?

Sparta, yea, what else can you say, you can't.
West Frankfort is terrible now, but they have some great talent coming up, not to mention they were playoff qualifiers in 2007.
Pinckneyville is much improved this year. They will turn the heads of some in the R2R Mississippi.

Christopher has fallen on hard times, so I will give you that one. However, getting to beat up on Vienna and Elverado every year is nothing to be proud of.

We'll just have to wait until October 22, when they announce the pairings, and hopefully a match up the following week.

I might be one of them there dumb ole Sesserites but I'm thinkin' if you show up to Ewing "Northeastern Franklin county" to watch Benton and Sesser play in the playoffs, give me a call. It would be worth missing the first quarter just to get a snapshot of you in your "sweet" moment looking for a football field.

I remember when this happened. Never could understand how Montgomery was part of the coaching staff in the first place. I don't care if Clod wants to have a few beers, but don't drink and then approach your team.

THANK YOU! Nashville BARELY beat Sesser. If it weren't for the beast of Mammel, Nashville would have been embarrassed.

And in basketball, you're right, benton did beat sesser that year in the BIT. But everyone in southern illinois knows sesser wasn't themselves for a month and a half during the season, and what'd they end up doin? Yeah, playing for the state championship, if benton were 1A that year, they wouldn't even have made it to Sectionals.

I hate to say it, but if Benton and Sesser were to meet in the playoffs this year, I cannot wait to go and watch that game.

And regardless, my main point was what the players were saying on this forum, flat out. Has ONE Sesser kid said something?

I'm not from Sesser nor do I own any Sesser apparel. As a matter of fact most of the things I own sports wise are Maroon and White with a Ranger on them. I just think that these days that Sesser could beat Benton in football.. Ten years ago, that previous statement would have been a joke.

They do. If you are in any activity at benton high, including band, speech, sports, and everything else, you are subject to random drug tests.
