My husband, Jim Cheetham,, was a weekend lifeguard with his twin brother, Glenn, at Moore's Lake, in 1961/62, while they were stationed at Fort Lee. The owners of the resort were Polly and Frances Spinner, who called them the "California boys". Jim remembers teaching their daughter, Linda, how to swim. Frances was pregnant with John Steven or Steven John. In fact, Jim sent them a baby rattle with his name engraved when he came back to California. Jim would love to know how they are and what happened to them. thank you, Linda

I will never forget Moores Lake. I swam and danced my heart out every summer. I loved the Spinners. They were a great family. I dated J.P. Spinner when I was a teenager. We always had a great time. Still love to dance. I remember that winding road going down to the lake and the feeling of happiness. Loved the summers at the lake. Really wish there were more pictures of those of us that danced our legs off. Miss that part of life. It was one of my most precious memories. Going to the Lake was best! Use to catch a ride with Raymond Anderson or Mom, started to drive and really thought I was Miss Thing. Funny how life turns out. Would like to do that part again.

There were actually several swimming lakes in Chesterfield. Manchester Lake was located near what is now the intersection of chippenham and hull. The remnants of the lake are being utilized by the apartment complex located there. It was closed in the mid 60s due to an outbreak of spinal meningitis. This prompted the closing of nearly all the lakes in the area. Lake Chester/Flippos was located near what is the current Haley Ford remnants were visible until construction in the late 80s. Moores Lake remains across from Sonic on Jeff Davis. New construction of the Dollar Tree masks what is left of the complex. Remnants like a slide of Redwater Lake were visible until the early 1980s just off the I 95 exit on Rt 10 heading east towards Hopewell. The land was completely filled in just a few years ago before construction of the courtyard hotel. You would never suspect a lake was ever there! Sad that all of these places have been lost to the ages. There was nothing like leaving your hot, unfair conditioned home for a day at the lake!

I know this is an old post, and i doubt it will be seen again, however me and a couple buddies recently learned of the moore's lakes history, and have been down to the lake in the last few days. were quite curious of what it used to be as we are far to young to have known it when it was in its prime (we are in the 24-28 age range). I happened to notice a lot of people on here are interested in restoring it to its former glory, and i am remotly curious how many people would be willing to put an effort together to make it happen. Me and my friends were discussing how awesome it would be to have something like that around here as there isnt much to do that doesnt involve a bar or something of that nature. We would also like to see some older pictures if anyone has them so that we can try to imagine it in its prime, so far all we can find is one picture from what i believe to be the 1950's. so its quite hard to imagine what was from what is nowadays. also we plan on returning in the next few days and taking pictures of its current condition and i would be willing to share those pictures with anyone if they wanted them.

I remember somthing about that but that lake was north of Moores and on the west of Jeff Davis hiway. I remember it had a HUGE slide. Someone did die in the late 60's from spinal meningitis and it was traced back to that lake

Tony, that was Lake Chester. Two boys got meningitis but it came out later that they had been swimming in the James River and probably got it there. Unfortunately, that story kept people away from Lake Chester and it closed. The owner committed suicide after that.
I worked with a guy whose grandfather dug out Lake Chester using mule power. Proctor's Creek is right there and probably fed the lake. It was filled in and I think there is a Ford dealer there now. It's on the west side of Rt.1 at Rt. 288.

I have a postcard titled "Moore's Lake Tavern, on Richmond Petersburg Pike, P.O. Chester, VA", posted in 1934. It was in with a stack of cards I bought at auction. I will be listing it today on ebay. If you don't want to bid on it, you can at least see it and print out a photocopy. Look under vintage postcards. My seller name is "coolcritter"

I scanned those old photos of Moore's Lake from probably 1955 and e-mailed them to everyone who requested them on this site that had an e-mail address on here. If there's anyone else who would like to have them, please let me know your e-mail address. Thanks.
Living and working in the Caribbean now, but, surely miss Moore's and Chrystal Lakes from my childhood. Would love to see pics if you have them.
Thanks.
