My father-in-law was a lifeguard at Moore's lake a long time ago. In the summers he used to take the family and Mark, my husband, remembers the lake well. He would love to see any pictures. His dad was Kenneth Leech.

I went there years and years ago. I remember wooley bully. LOL. I liked a lifeguard there named Steve and he went to Vietnam and came back not so good. He was so nice. I never heard any race problems but I did hear spiral menengitis or something like that. I am 58. I loved it there.

I remember Moore's lake as a great place. We left the area in 69, moved to WV, parents home. We first lived on Semmes ave, was an old 2 story house, they tore it down and built a 7-eleven. We also lived out in chester at Crostick Millpond, didn't know that was the name of the place till recently. When we left, the owner was putting in a swimming area, was gonna call it Club Lake Eva, if I remember right. Was back there a few years ago, boy has things changed.

I think you're talking about Marvin that lived alone and drove a van. He worked for the Dept. Of Corrections and was a child molester. He killed himself because he didn't want end up on the other side of the bars. Working in the prison system, he knew what they do to child molesters.

I as well grew up up in that area. My family lived in Quail Oaks, in the 60's. We would bounce back and forth between Moore's Lake & Flippo's Lake. The only problem I had with Moore's Lake, was if you swam for more than 2 hour, you could not run a comb through your hair. It must of been all of the chemicals in the lake. Didn't have that problem at Flippos. I remember at Flippo's, the little amusement section, with the oval train track. It had a conductor, that would sit on a small scale size train, & pull the kids in the rest of the cars. I too would like to comme across a postcard, or some pics of the old place. That was some good times.

I was born in 1965 and grew up behind the old Bellwood Drive-In. I remember going to Moore's Lake when I was little. I remember that I had a fear of water so it took me several trips before I would ever make it to the sliding board with the hump in the middle. I can still picture myself wading out. I never knew why Moore's was closed but I do remember that my dad told me that another swimming place was closed because someone died from catching a disease. That place was located on the west side of Jefferson Davis Hwy. and I think it was Flippo's. One more thing I remember my dad telling me is that in front of Holiday Bowl there is a pond and that it was discovered that quick sand was at the bottom. True or not, I don't know. That's what dad told me.

I'm really sorry if there are some people on here that I didn't respond to for pictures. I hadn't looked at this thread for I don't know how long!! I sent my photos to a number of people. My pictures, along with quite a few others, are now on a Facebook site for Moore's Lake. It's a great site with photos that many people have contributed of the lake, the cottages, old postcards, etc. There's a wonderful panoramic shot of the lake that really brings the memories back. You should all join the Facebook site! I've been passing the word to all the people from my Thomas Dale reunion and it's getting around quickly.

I have been in search of a Flippo's Lake photo for many years. My family lived right around the corner from the lake and we spent our growing up years riding our bikes down the hill to the lake in the summer. There were three of us, my sister, myself, and a neighbor boy. Being out in the country side, there were very few houses in this area, thus very few children. Great memories! We frequented this lake (also know as Red Water Lake at one time) on a daily basis during the summer. Large bath house, picnic pavilions, sandy beach areas, two tall slides, one wooden, one metal with a big bump in the middle, triple diving boards, boardwalks, all day suckers and cream horns! Swimming lessons through the Red Cross, etc. Hard to describe the physical layout to my family, a picture would be worth a thousand words. Just visited a local restaurant where someone told me there might be a picture of Flippo's Lake on display. Turned out it was Moore's Lake, of which there is another copy in another local restaurant. I would be interested in any information that might lead me to a good picture. I understood Mr. Flippo passed away recently. Spoke with him about 14 years ago but did not follow through with getting a photo. Your comments are appreciated!
mrs flippo has also passed away however mr flippos brother who has lived a few blocks from me "also passed on" however his wife is alive and well. I have a meeting with her on monday. will be getting info on that lake.

I propose that all of us who saw Moore's Lake as the place to be for recreation form a "Friends of Moore's Lake" group and get this thing recorded for posterity.
How about The pavilion? Ever dance to Wooly-Bully (sp)there? Ever swim all day and make out all night? Ever lay on that wonderful sand and soak up the rays?
Ever wonder why the stars were brighter around Moore's at night in the Summertime?
How about the absolute hospitality of the owners, the Spinner family?
And do you realize the property is being developed with the purose of "saving the Moore's Lakes" (there are two at least on the property.
How about we get it together and help the developer decide to restore the Lakes to their former beauty.
Who can ever forget the anticipation of driving down that winding road on the way to a holiday from everyday stuff?
I do, and if you do, you should get off the couch, grab the memorabilia and push for this thing of beauty to be restored.

On Facebook in the "If you lived in Hopewell before 1989 and remember ...." group, http://www.facebook.com/groups/24241788578902... , pictures and discussion of the local Lakes are common. There are several pictures of Moore's Lake and some pictures that might be Flippo's (Red Water) Lake.

I am not sure, from what I can remember two boys (Woody and Michael Murray) I grew up with on Cicero Parkway in Chester lost their father to Spinal Meningitis from swimming in Chester Lake or it might have been Flippo's. It seems to me it happened in the late 60's or very early 70's. There was a small lake at the eastern intersection of Rt 10 and I95; another on a hill north and on the same side of what was the Bennett Ford Dealership on US1; Forest Lake in the neighborhood I grew up in had a small swimming hole and what looked to be a laundry Mat??? There were many places to swim in Chester and a lot of good memories to go with them. Keep the thread going!
I knew Woody and Michael, grew up on cicero.
