I've encountered some nasty a******s like this "Shalimar Santiago" (a sissy name) in Chicago traffic over the years but not like this; only over some minor or perceived traffic hassle where the a*****e starts tail-gaiting and chasing people. I saw one latino "macho man" jump out of his truck at a stoplight with a little "bat day" replica and bash the hell out of an old man's Cadillac behind him, then drive away on the green. Was unable to follow him or to call the cops as I'd wished. BTW, is this guy Puerto Rican, as it sure sounds like it?

Don't let Daley hear about this, he's still trying to convince the IOC that Chicago is a beautiful, peaceful city.
Hey, pal, find the IOC's address, publish it and let's all start forwarding this info to them to stop Richie Shortshanks and his rich and crazy pal Ryan.

OK, so I've said some noxious things on this thread. The kids did not in any way deserve what they got. I was just a little unnerved by some of the comments in the first couple pages calling for Mr. Santiago's untimely death - "Hang him," "stone him," "bludgeon him," etc. To me, the prospect that some ticking time bomb of a lynch mob could be scattered around my block is infinitely more terrifying than mistaken vehicular assault during a late night in gangland.

That said, please. Does anyone really believe that one group of college-age kids decided to go to a club in the city and not drink, ran into another group of college-age kids they knew who had also decided not to drink that night, finished up dancing, petting kittens and making wishes, and then just happened to get "lost" in the city?

Of course, whether or not they'd been drinking wouldn't have mattered in the end, so maybe I shouldn't have brought it up. I guess I'm sorry for that.

Although...I want you to run your entire comment through a spell-check (punctuation too!) so we can re-evaluate which one of us gets to use the word "genius" sarcastically.

You know what....people say those kids honostly deserve what they got cuz they were on the wrong side of town?? So..if you were lost on the wrond side of town does that mean u get to deserve to die?? My brother has been good friends with the driver for many years now, and its a shame that this had happen to them cuz some idiot was stupid. I hope the basterd gets everything he deserves for the best of them. I just hope my brothers friend comes out of the coma cuz that would be a good life that has been wasted and that is just a shame. So honostly before people talk crap maybe they should know what the hell they are talking about!!!

Not sure if they had been drinking, at least the driver wasn't and who cares if the others were? Nobody deserves this and the possibility that they could have been drinking doesn't change the fact that this gangster wanted to kill them and should be severely punished. There is no other reason you would do what he did other than to want to kill them all. If there were 8 in the vehicle most likely none of them had seat belts on except for the ones in the front. Unfortunately they didn't react fast enough to call 911 or to buckle up right away.... it was all too fast and they didn't expect to crash. I have an 18 year old daughter and it breaks my heart to hear what happened to these kids who just went out to have fun.
The victims are not to blame here!!! They didn't do anything to provoke what happened, so start blaming the true cause of all this...this stupid gangster who I hope dies in prison.

If he is a Puerto Rican he is an American citizen. All Puerto Ricans are American citizens. So an American killed another American, nothing more, nothing less.

Maybe some enterprising attorney can turn it into a class action lawsuit.
It seems the only way to properly tackle the gang problem is through the courst because legislators, city and state, are doing zilch.
excellent idea only these people have no regards for life much less the law. what would they be sued for their link cards?

<quoted text>Why didn't you just shut up after your first few posts?? Pretty impressive - you made yourself look like a bigger A Whole!!!! Why don't you exaggerate a little more - lynch mob in your neighborhood. Get a pair you d-bag. People want him to get the death penalty and pay for what he did. Look out - angry Chicago Tribune bloggers are hunting down the jag bag that ran down those kids - run!! BTW -calling him Mr. Santiago shows him respect. Starting to think you know him or you look up to him. Quite frankly - a lynch mob wouldn't be that bad of an idea when it comes to the little gang bangers. If only citizens could arm themselves against these little pr icks.
Stop bringing up drinking - I didn't think it was possible to contradict yourself that many times in the same forum.

Well, it seems someone put the comment I was going to respond to out of its misery, so just look at the quoted text in #87.

I'm digging myself quite a hole here; it might as well be a hole I can feel good about. So I'll admit, questioning whether the kids were drunk or not was stupid and I'll back off from it.

Now we can discuss the good stuff: violence.

This tragedy, it seems, occurred because Mr. Santiago (Mr., because he remains a human being with human dignity no matter how rotten he is) decided to ram a car full of people to get revenge for somebody shooting his friend (the fact that it was the wrong car notwithstanding).

Now, many of the posters here are calling for Mr. Santiago to be dispatched at the hands of the state (with a bone-chilling few offering to take care if it themselves, Internet bravado or no) in revenge for ramming that car.

Where's your moral high ground? A vendetta killing is a vendetta killing. Putting it in the hands of the state and calling it "justice" doesn't change that.

A culture that celebrates violence begets violence at all levels. You may think yourselves morally superior to Mr. Santiago by advocating death for people who "deserve" it and not personally getting your hands dirty, but it all feeds back into a loop of honor killings and machismo and a lowered value of human life.

As for the lynch mob part: There was another group of people some years back who sat in their living rooms muttering about the need to "clean out the ghettos." None of them did it, of course, until a smooth-talking right-wing politico assured them they had nothing to be ashamed of, and that something had to be done before it was too late, bleeding-heart liberalism be damned.

Kristallnacht, November 9, 1938, a bunch of Germans took it upon themselves to "clean out the ghetto" with the backing of a sympathetic state. The next day, major deportations of German Jews to the concentration camps began.

Do you see what you're feeding now?

Oh yes, these comment boards are filled with adults making intelligent arguments Allison. If you don't like it, go get together with your little prayer group and knit. Go play with yourself, when you are finished I will show you my morals.

Obviously they were drinking (they had a designated driver) but who cares. The question is why these kids were on Augusta Blvd @4am? Kids from Melrose Park know Augusta Blvd is south of North Avenue. If they really did just pull off the expressway to use the bathroom, get back on when your done!

Unfortunately one of these kids DECIDED to drive through Humboldt Park (for whatever reason) and they encountered a pos. I absolutely beleive that it is a terrible shame that anyone lost thier life/lifestyle, and hopefully this will be a lesson to other kids that nothing good happens in the city after midnight and be careful.

Gee whiz, I sure wish Allison L would be able to see my moral standards. Golly, I don't know how I will sleep knowing that my hijinks on this forum has cast a dark shadow on Allison L's perception of the type of life I lead. Dear Lord, I know having fun by using profanity is a violation of moral expectations, so the next time I want to call someone a d-bag or a pr ick - I am just going to turn the other cheek. I dont agree with abortion, but if anyone should have been aborted it should have been santiago. What a waste of 27 years. Heres a hot tip, check who you are ramming in your mommy's mini van that probably has no insurance to begin with. You should not even be given the chance to stand a trial. They should just shoot you and bill your gang banging buddys for the bullet.
