Long story short ... I graduated OLney High SChool (NE Philly) in 1967, so there is an attempt to gather the alu7mni for a potential 40 reunion next summer, so even though I live in south Florida, I've heard from former classmates in the last few weeks which spawned enjoyable conversations, which included "What ever happened to ...". When I asked about the beautiful blonde we all admired (Elizabeth "Beth" Suttie) the response was ... "I think she was brutally murdered, stabbed in some ritual-type slaying in Bensalem, and the perpetrator was also one of our '67 classmates". I'm shocked. But, that's where the flow of data stops. Nobody knows any more. No dates, no reasons, no details, no info on conviction or prison term, etc. Does anybody know where I might fill in those gaps in detail? Is there a Bensalem newspaper which might have archives dating back to the 70's from which I could become informed? Thanks, Ed ... [email protected] (Hobe Sound, Florida)

I think you're talking about the Abt Family murders. It happened around 1974, I think, in Bensalem, Pa.(it might be the Trevose section of Bensalem) A neighbor was in love with one of the sisters, but she had a boyfriend. One day, he broke in their house, and, one by one, as each family member came home, he shot them. The only one to survive was a son, Michael, because he didn't come home.

The local paper is Bucks County Courier Times. The only reason I remember is because I was in fourth grade at the time, and went to school with one of the daughters, Kathy. I lived in Bensalem most of my life, and that's the only multi-murder that I can remember, or even any stories of one. Hope it's a help.

The whole story of the Abt murders, along with many other murders in Bucks County have been documented at:

It's really a horrible stoey and I still can't believe that it happened just down the street from me.

I grew up with the Abt family, they lived next door. I was in that house many times as a child. To this day I can remember that March day as if it were yesterday. God Bless Michael, I hope he is doing okay, since he is the only living member. Cliff died some years back.

"god bless michael"????
What george did was wrong, no doubt but the problems that Mr. & Mrs. Abt had with those 2 was known to many people.
I knew the family also and went to school and was in the boy scout troop that they were in and also that Mr. Abt was an asst. scout master.
They were always in trouble, picking on any kid they viewed as being weaker or different. George was a favorite mark for cliff b/c he stayed to himself. He was relentless. At home, school in public. Michael followed cliff and his tormenting was as he got older. I remember sitting in a neighbors house, mike was suppose to be watching the kids while the parents were out, and the things he did were disturbing. Spitting on the floor and making them wipe it up with their hands and things I don't care to speak of now or ever.
Michael should not have "god's blessings" what he should ask for is God's forgiveness b/c he drove people to the point of exploding. I saw him years after the murders and he was all decked out with his motorcycle and colors. He rode by my house where my wife and 3 kids lived and threatened me with a hand to his head in the form of a gun and smiled. I showed him a finger and he left. A few hours later I was visted by his backups the breed motorcycle "club".
Michael and Clifford were cowards. They never did anything on their own they couldn't defend themselves they backed down ALL the time unless there was a group of their "buddies they kept their mouths shut.
Remember, clifford was in bucks county jail for signing checks that weren't his! He was forging his fathers name.
George wasn't in love with one of the victums he was tired of the abuse these two bullies were committing. These two had a history of abuse with many people and a history with the police. The newspaper made those two out to be the victums. In court michael and his boys sat there and made noises like an electric chair. The paper was more focussed on "the handsome blonde haired" michael then the monsters they were. I saw those two grow up and the heartache their family was going through trying to raise those two animals. Stop making them out to be the sainted victums and see them as the monsters they were.

People are not interested in the truth. Like I said previously and which were deleted by this forum, they tormented the poor guy and he exploded and shot the family. Theres always a motive. Nobody just shoots a family for no reason, unless it's some low level stick-up type crime. Whitetrash always gets theres in the end.

Ask michael about the trip he and cliff took one night down the 84 steps to the tracks and layed railroad ties on the tracks just in time for the commuter train coming from phila. on a week day to hit them and almost derail.
Mr. Abt was held responsible for that bit of "fun" those "poor boys" caused. Only the Abt's knew what that cost them maybe their lives.
Feel grieve for the murder victums but feel nothing but contempt for those 2.

I was in the senior class of 1970 with George (who killed the Abt family). In fact he was my walking partner at the graduation ceremony. He was very much a quiet, quirky loner who got picked on frequently. I didn't know him personally nor did I know the Abt family. I don't condone what George did at all, but it seems from 1970 up to now, little has changed in helping the kids who need it before something or someone makes them snap. I was a teacher for 28 years so I know from experience.

Helping kids that need it? You get what you deserve sometimes. If you are a prick, you get whacked. Life has repercussions. This guy George didn't need to kill the entire family. He should of just killed the sons. It's comical how everyone acts like the killer was nuts. Just like in Columbine High School. It was a big football jock school and the football players were pricks and owned the school. Everyone pretends they were a bunch of nice wholesome people. They were pricks. If women reward the a-holes with sex and teachers reward the a-holes by kissing their butts it gives the keys to the school to the a-holes.

It amazes me how many of these post actually condone this murder, no matter what type of bullies these kids were.Nothing justifies the atrocious, despicable, heinous, act of a multiple family murder. There must be some other way to stop bullying before it gets to this point.

Maybe it will act as a deterence. Most people that get killed deserve it or owe someone alot of money. You screw with the wrong person you get killed.

I guess I think that is a little crazy. I'm a pacifist and believe in peace, and I think there is always another way. Violence begat's more violence. Example: look at the streets of Philadelphia. That seems to be the general consensus on the street..you fuc$ with me and I kill you..seems to be a bit Neanderthal, if you ask me. Where where does intellect come in to the equation? It is total raw emotions taking over. Instead of reason. I can see that happening in children as opposed to adults, although I am not condoning it either way! But adults should know better..but then if we did the world wouldn't be a mess of wars..including the ones on our own streets. I think if people would stop being so hot headed and think before they react with violence this place would be a better world. Although I do agree that one cannot go around harassing others..and especially children of school age..I do believe a better effort to promote awareness of 'bullying' must be made in general. It has to be a community effort. Through community programs, church and school programs, to educate our youth, and in the process preserve their lives and their future. It has to start with the example we as adults set for our children.
peace be with you.

Thank you for telling this side of the story. I'm the author of the website - http://amusementparknostalgia.com/cbc/indcbca...

I didn't know the family, but I remember when it happened. It unnerved me because I was just 25, and had just moved to Bensalem.

I got all my information for my website from newspaper archives. They didn't say anything about the boys being trouble. So I'm glad to hear this side of the story. Makes me want to re-write my story.

I remember the Abt Family murder. I was going to Neil Armstrong Middle School and living in Cornwall Heights, Nehsaminy Valley at the time...

it freaked me out really bad. I never forgot it even after we moved back to New York. I would think about it at some point every year. Back then it was unsolved and I think that was the part that bothered me the most.

Now it's been solved, but I still think about those kids.
