I wonder how they learned that he had a history of falling asleep while driving? It's sad to think that this poor fellow fell victim to his own deadly ignorance about safe strategies to stay alert!

Here is the problem!

2.3million motorists - 7 per cent of the country's drivers - admit they fell asleep while driving in the last 12 months.
133,000 say it happened ten times or more.
A fifth of motorway crashes, which most commonly happen between midnight and 6am or 2pm and 4pm, are because of fatigue.
Tiredness is estimated to be responsible for more than 300 deaths on the roads a year.
The survey of 1,000 drivers found that 78 per cent try futile methods to combat the problem rather than stop for a nap.
Just 21 per cent said they would stop for a snooze but 68 per cent would open a window and 50 per cent listen to the radio, CD or tape.
More than two thirds - 71 per cent - claim to have a good night's sleep before a long journey and to take regular breaks.
Four out of 10 have a drink containing caffeine to give them a boost.
More than four out of ten of tired drivers say they would stop earlier if possible.

"history of falling asleep while driving" "just leaving lions club" No drinking""?? and 80 years old.. Thankfully he only killed himself and not a family of 5......... Sounds very irresponsible to me. I from first hand experience know how hard it is to take driving away from an elderly parent. but after reading this ,, i'm sure glad I did.

On Wednesday morning, http://www.cbs6albany.com/ reported that "family members" said that he had a history of falling asleep while driving. And he still drove??? Good thing he did not kill anyone else along with himself.

What is so harsh? People are saying that we should all learn from this and that it is very fortunate that no one else was injured.

It is hard to have respect for anyone's family deceased or not who just couldn't see to it that their loved one was unable to drive safely to save the lives of millions if he were on the road very often.... this is coming from someone who lost 4 family members from an 83 year old sleepy, driver.. it is my right to be harsh. btw,, his family just couldn't bring themselves to take his license either..

I am agreeing with you. His family should have had respect for others and taken this man's license away. But we still don't know what happened. This man could have had a heart attack.
