This is ironic seeing that the state pays for most of the rent that Cross gets from his tenants.

I think where this started is when a short while ago the police were called to 326 Pleasant Street multiple times a day, day in and day out for like a month straight and they finally got sick of it! PC is numero uno slum lord extraordinaire! The stories I have heard!

This lead compliance/containment/disclos ure issue has been in place for years. These are laws that are in place on a Federal level. I am surprised (if this is true) that he would have risked it. For many years when I drive around Bennington, I have noticed deteriorating exterior paint on numerous multi families. For a landlord there is a huge liability. For the sake of the safety of the tenants with children under the age of six (usually the highest risk group according to the lead program, there is a booklet),I hope the town building inspector made a note of it in the past and warned these tenants and the owner. In other states (CT being one),the building inspector will put a property on notice if there are tenants for lead paint deterioration and exposure. I truly hope that any children that stayed in these conditions have been tested for lead paint exposure which can lead to many development problems. Just IMHO.

If this is the source of his rent roll then there is a record of all of the at risk children who have been exposed. Not good for his sake.. if this all is true.. Just IMHO

There are a whole slew of people including PC who have let this one slide! I hope it puts him out of business but his protections are in place so we'll just have to wait and see what happens! Time to call out the problems or problem people in this business!

Suit:Lead law affects 14 properties
According to the office, 14 of Cross' properties are affected.
The technician found all of the properties were out of compliance, noting deteriorated paint.
Cross faces civil penalties of up to $10,000 for each of the three offenses.

Can I count or not? All 14 properties are affected and out of compliance but there are only three offenses? Sounds like PC has an ace in the hole already!

Hi Real Vermonter:
In going thru bennington's grand list, it can be difficult to tally up as many investors in multi-families form corporations. The usual one is the number and street (example: 1 Main Street Inc.). Investors want to make sure that "the corporate veil is not pierced". I am not sure that by searching under his name you will come up with the real count.

Re: lead law offenses. I have to believe that this was missreported. It is either in compliance or not.
If the Banner wants to step up to the plate, they should identify the buildings to enlighten the community.

According to the Attorney General's website there are 37 properties:
http://www.atg.state.vt.us/
Just a footnote, why did it take the Banner two days to report this? He is obviously a large landlord in the area. I suppose they were waiting for his comment but PLEASE for the sake of the tenants and the community put the news out TIMELY!

So what you are saying is that this is small town small newspaper politics. I guess the Cross's have an influence in town. Quite interesting and should be introduced to the main stream media... real quick.
Could be a very disturbing story that the town building inspector, manager and everybody else turned the other way while small children were being endangered to profit a small town enterprise...which might have (again alledged) received Section 8 rent rolls...The main stream media loves corruption on a local level.... Just you wait Henry Higgins as they say... how disgusting....again IMHO (in my humble opinion)

Just a footnote... they must be shaking in their boots at town hall...for years one could drive around town and see violations. I had hoped that this would be corrected but it wasn't..
What about other properties... I hope those landlords wake up and smell the coffee and get in compliance... Maybe Bennington will start to look better.. what a concept... again IMHO (in my humble opinion)

I love to shop at Henry's in the 800 section of Main Street. As you go up, on the left there is a large historic white building on the other side of the laundromat. It is obviously a multi family but it is in very sad shape, peeling paint, structural issues...Where is the town with this? This was once
a wonderful structure (I still admire the widows walk on top)
Where is the building inspector? Especially if they are collecting rent? Just asking.. again...IMHO

From the Attorney General site:
"According to the Complaint, Cross filed lead law compliance documents with the Vermont Department of Health for 37 rental properties in November 2008 and again in February 2009. The lawsuit alleges that after being denied permission by Cross to inspect the properties to determine the accuracy of the compliance documents, the Department of Health conducted exterior visual inspections of 14 of CrossÂ’ properties in January and February 2009"
Bottom line. only exterior.
People please! Madoff extorted...it can happen anywhere...if a landlord is accepting funds from Section 8 they have a responsibility.. obviously the Attorney General has seen that he violated his relationship... big time!

To the Banner:
Please investigate this story further.
Please drive around Bennington and see the derelict buildings that are not being maintained.
Maybe it took the state to bring it to light but still it has to be corrected.
Look up the "landlords" and expose them.
I am not a tenant or a landlord but simply a taxpayer who cares...

You are talking about 806 Main Street which is owned by 806 MAIN STREET BENNINGTON LLC (who knows who that is probably peter cross) and also well known by local police! There are one or two bad apples who get state aid in there who touch off around the 1st and the 15th! I think thats when they get their FREE drugs!
