"In 1944, the year I was born, 50 percent of all in intercity trips were done by rail," said George Lerrigo, who has been part of a local rail advocacy group, the Southwestern Vermont Rail Corridor Committee, "Amtrak [makes up] about two to three percent of intercity trips now. So we've gone from 50 to two and we wonder why we have full highways."
...and 200 years ago, most intercity trips were by horse or foot. Maybe we should go back to those days.
Despite romantic fantasies, rail traffic is not economical anymore except where large amounts of people want to go on the exact same route (e.g., NY to DC).
Southwest ALB to BWI roundtrip from $204 takes less than 2 hours each way.
Amtrak same route,$266 and takes over 6 hours each way. And this is one of the better serviced routes.
Unless you're a drug dealer, you take the plane.
