As an outsider of your community, I am appalled at your city council. One officer encounters three people drinking on a public street and attempts to arrest. When the men resist arrest, he handcuffs them and the city council suspends him? For excessive force? Obviously, your city council lacks common sense. It is strikingly apparent there is one set of rules for the majority and one set of rules for the select few. Your elected city leaders must believe they are above the law. We used to stop and shop in your town but no more. We don't go where lawlessness is endorsed by the city leaders. It is too risky. May I congratulate you in advance because with the publicity your council has generated by their stupidity, your town should see an increase in population with an influx of criminals that will surely want to live there. If I were one, I sure would!

I give the Police Cheif kudos for sticking up for what he believes in and that is he is supporting his officers. It seems the city of Wilton will be without a police cheif for sometime if they continue on the same path of governing. I can assure that in Phoenix, AZ just because you handcuff someone you will not be suspended. This does not classify a justifiable suspension it is called "detaining a suspect". Maybe the Mayor or the Town Council should go on a couple ride alongs with the Police Deptartment to see what happens in there city. They seem kind of clueless! Police Officers of Wilton need to support there Cheif becasue it seems he is supporting you and watching out for what is best for you!

Don't jump the gun to back the Chief or the officer. I used to be his Sergeant in Wilton and there's alot about these guys you don't know. I left in December of 2005 because I couldn't watch the Dumb and Dumber show anymore.

Thanks Justin! I am a former Wilton resident and I am appalled at the force that was used on these young men. I agree that they shouldn't have been drinking in public, but if you pay attention to what has been said in the newspapers you will see that Officer Jansen admits they were not looking for trouble. I am currently living in Iowa City and as a former student and resident I know that this kind of activity occurs all of the time in the downtown ped mall. I also know several police officers (very well - in fact,I talk with one daily) and they were shocked that such force was used even for "resisting arrest". They deal with public intox on a regular basis and they told me that if a taser or spray was used they would probably not have a job the next day. Before you judge, please think back to your wild and crazy days. Did you ever walk down the street after you had been drinking? Did you deserve to be tasered or maced? I think if you read the transcripts of what happened later in the police department you will see that the officer in question admits that one of the young men did in fact have his hands behind his back and was not being aggressive in any way. He THOUGHT he might attack - not that he was actually doing it. BUT because he THOUGHT he might attack he jumped him and arrested him for resisting arrest. These men were not looking for problems - they even offered to go back home - walking, not driving. Please remember that police officers are here to protect. I doubt that anyone in Wilton, IA had much to be concerned about from these four men. I do think we need to worry how much we are being protected by someone like this overly aggressive officer. Find out the other stories about this officer. Surely you realize that this wasn't the first incident. How about the man he tasered for loud music. Every teen in a car with loud music should be concerned for their safety. How about the woman who was pepper sprayed after he dragged her out of her car by her hair because her music was to loud - oh and it was while she was waiting for her boyfriend to come out with their groceries. That is dangerous stuff he is protecting us from! Those terrible people with the loud music. Again, before you start judging please make sure you have the facts.

I also was a reserve officer for the city of wilton. I made a comment about how the chief had basically hired the wrong person for the job and he tried to fire me. I was a volunteer, not paid and because he didn't like the comment he wanted me gone. Alot of officers have been treated like this. Justin is a prime example he did his job and did it right. Justin didn't kiss butt to get where he was as a sergeant his work did that for him. Justin was a huge asset to wilton and basically the chief didn't like that he wanted someone who wanted to kiss his butt. Officer Janssen deserved what he got and so did the chief. I am really impressed with the mayor and the city for finally correcting the problem, now all we need to do is get Justin and John back here to wilton.

What some people don't know is that there were four boys there on the March 13 incident. The forth boy's last name is Utterback. He cooperated fully and was not charged or arrested. And Officer Jenson said that if the boys would have just cooperated that he probably would have just dumped out the liquor and sent them on their way. It was not him who was swearing and yelling. It is all on the transcripts and will come out in due time. Don't get me wrong I am not on either side of this splitting cause, but I know that there is so much more to the stories that people don't know yet.

I think that the chief is great for standing up for his officers, but he has too because he ran every other officer out of town!! And who is suffering - our town.

The city council is effected because one of their very own was stopped by Officer Jenson who after learning that there was a city official in the car called in another officer. This non city police officer then cited him (Keith Stanley) for an OWI.

I have dealt with Officer Jenson on several occasions and never had a problem with him. I was taught to respect my officers with sir and ma'am and they will respect me back, and that has always worked for me. As a matter of fact Jenson even has given my b/f a warning for a moving violation. I think it has to due with respect. Sure respect works on a two way road and none of us were there to know the whole story - but I hope that we can get some of our good officers back and nothing would make me happier then to have my neighbor home (did I hear right Justin - you applied for chief?) I think that is great. I also think that John should be offered his job back.(There is a shady story of ultimatums behind his leaving our force.)

If you want a job you apply right (?) well I think that our city officials should apply to our officers John and Justin because we need them!!! They should not have to apply b/c they have proven themselves already.....

my opinion anyway

After rereading that it almost sounds like I might be supporting the actions of Officer Jenson - and that is not it - just to clear it up to everyone. I think that everyone makes mistakes and not everyone knows the whole story. Not even I do - but I have the ability to think outside of the box and see everyone's opinions but still make my own.

I think that everyone is so up tight about it all and not all the information is out there. Again I can't wait to hear what the city say's about our wanting Jonh and Justin back. I am glad that rumor mill says that Justin applied and I hope that John does too. We can't go wrong with the two of them.

Ok so I have heard a ton about these transcripts where are they who has them and where did they come from. How can people be sure that they haven't been edited? Just wondering.

You can't be sure they aren't tampered with. The true story would only come out with an independent investigation.

Unfortunately, given Wilton's size, that kind of price tag would not be worth it. The town is going to have to allow the elected leaders to do their job and deal with it.

Your right Matt - it would be hard to tell if they were edited... I guess that I just got the impression that was Terri C had was correct b/c of the ordeal Mayor Summy made about how she got them - your right they could be edited.

I'd like for the public to hear them all - all of the audio from the times that people have complained about him - until that happens I guess we can't say one way or the other.... and that is not likey to happen...

Lets not get me started with terri, she has stirred up alot of stuff. I have seen her name in the paper more than any other citizen in wilton. Why is she fighting the council? Could it be that she wasn't elected mayor and trying to make a name for herself. I feel that she is doing this for personal gain, so that when the next election comes up the city will vote for her. I think that this is the wrong way to get votes as a matter of fact I think that she is losing votes. That is just my opinion though.

Teri wants her son hired as a cop...I think that a lot of people in Wilton know that. She is backing them, so that they look harder at him as a potential hire.

So apparently she got the transcripts from david. Well I can tell you that she is going about this the wrong way and that the city won't hire someone who is going to stirr this stuff up. I also doubt that david is going to pass the physical testing of it so why bother. Oh well then she well figure it out.

Lisa, It's not a rumor I did put in my resume and when I got my city application in the mail last week it was 18 pages long, which I still have to turn in by April 12th. It used to be only three pages. I know that at least three city officials have been made aware of it and they weren't happy about the changes made. With the information in the packet it looked like the acting chief was trying to stack the deck in his favor so he would get the job by default. He's in for one hell of a suprise.

I am gonna have to agree with justin and say that I to believe in the fact that Scott Layne is trying to stack the deck in his favor. Lets take alook at this guy. He told everyone that he was the cheif deputy in Kentucky well come to find out that wasn't true. Also how often do you see Scott out patrolling, prolly about none since he says he has sooo much paperwork to do. I don't know about everyone else but I know I dont want to see this guy become cheif. Look at all the officers we had and then we hired Scott Layne isn't it weird that everything has gotten messed up since he has been here. Why would a man leave west liberty, leave the county of muscatine, leave somewhere in kentucky and come to wilton? Maybe there is good money in being a cop in wilton or maybe he had worn out his welcome in the other departments. Once again just voiceing my opinon.dd

I gots some comments for Mr. Matt Conrad,The only reason your not an Officer for the city of wilton, was because you liked going to outside cities flashing your badge. I just thought i would let the truth out, But i also agree with you. We need John back as Chief of Police. You shouldn't talk crap about David, You remind me of scott layne, talking behind peoples backs, Be a Big man and go say it to his face. But i would also like to tell you that i know you applied as a full time police officer, after Jansen left. i know for a fact, you will not get the job,and that was from the hope to be next chief of police, you should know what people think of you.

Well aparently you don't know me as well as you think. First of all I the reason I am not a police officer for the city of wilton is because I chose not to be. Maybe you should do some research on that I am sure your buddy the cheif could fill you in on that. Second I have established my career with a company at where I intend to stay. I never applied for any full time position at the police department and never will. Personally I know how people feel about me and I believe that you are wrong. Also I do not have any problems speaking my mind to anyone. I didn't really believe that I was talking about anyone in a negative aspect just stating the obivious. I would also like to say that nobody knows who the next cheif of police is and that if that person has a problem with me or if you do you could come talk to me about is sometime instead of hiding behind a name like none of your business. I am sure that people will see your comment for what it is worth. Thanks
