Ice cream hot spots in the Midwest

Full story: Chicago Tribune

WILTON, Iowa -- Anything worth having is, as they say, worth waiting for. The ice cream at the Wilton Candy Kitchen is certainly worth having, because it's as fresh as it gets.

Frosty Oasis in Muskegon, Michigan. Walk up windows, outside seating only, heading to or from the beach. Great ice cream treats and laid back, beach-style fun.

Hey, what about Rainbow Cone?

It's not officially summer until I've a bit of their delightful concoction dripping up my arm while I'm working on a waffle cone full of their ice cream.

Fair Oaks Farm. Right off of Interstate 65 at Exit 220, about 20 minutes south of Merrillville (U.S. 30). http://fofarms.com .

A double scoop cone in a waffle cone is almost as big as your head. They also do tours and other family friendly activities so it's worth the stop if you are in the area.

What, an article on Midwest ice cream that doesn't discuss Wisconsin frozen custard? Heresy! There's Michael's in Madison; Gilles and Kopp's in Milwaukee, and our own fabulous Scooter's on W. Belmont in Chicago.(I don't think Culver's really counts, although I'll take it over most store-bought ice cream any day.)

I've been to the Wilton Candy Kitchen. Trust me, it's not worth the drive. Thelma is a nice old lady, but anything she cooked on that hot plate really isn't that great. I sat in the same booth as Gregory Peck and Brooke Shields, but since they weren't there at the time, it wasn't that special.

Of course, if you just happen to be visiting Wilton, check out the Wilton Cafe just around the corner. They have great sandwiches, soup, and really excellant pie. This is what a small town diner is supposed to be.

We stopped at Wilton Candy Kitchen but it was closed that day. If you're out that way there's a great candy shop/ice cream parlor in Moline called Lagomarchino's.

Hands down.... NO CONTEST (assuming we have frozen custard in this debate).... TED DREWS in St. Louis, MO.

This place is incredible and has been in the same location for 80 years. Any night, and especially on weekends, their are literally hundreds of people there, and license plates from all over the country.

Tradition, great taste... amazing place!!!!
