There are many dangerous places around the world.Tekal ruins area in central america can be a dangerous place. This couple had spent time there before going to Ecuador. I have to say, living in Esmeraldas,Ecuador one must be very careful of assualt or robbery. Just last week two friends of mine were shot and killed by Columbianos in Esmeraldas.This is not uncommon.Walking around in Quito in gringoland (a small bar and eating area popular with americans and european tourists in the center of Quito) and the indian markets of Octovalo is completely different from the coastal areas of Ecuador. I would never walk alone in these beach areas day or night, It is just plain dangerous. I do agree, the state dept. needs to post strong warnings to anyone traveling to Esmeraldas or the coastal areas of ecuador.I wish this couple the best and a fast recovery.
