to many days off for schools

I would rather they make up days, than go to school in weather so severe; their lives were in danger just walking to the bus stop. They could slide on ice and break a leg, or a car could slide on the ice and slam into the kids; hurting or killing them.

A student is worth so much more, than a few missed snow days that have to be made up.

And what happened to Gov. Kasich giving back the 5 days, instead of the 3? Makes you wonder if he is going back on promises already.

No kidding.

To me, the people who willingly risked and gave their lives for us and this country are more important.

Kasich has said that he plans to change the calamity days for next school year (2011-2012). This school year is already in session and calendars have been set so changing this mid-year would be problematic. He is not going back on campaign promises, but he cannot snap his fingers and make everything happen just like that either.

Martin Luther King day.

Really, I see two sides to this -- while I believe that there are other 'holidays' that are more deserving of the country taking a pause, I also believe that if SOME of the kids get the day off, then ALL of them should have the same privilege.

Why not just give them the day off with pay like the city and state workers get. There are many misspent tax dollars to go around for everyone!

First off, my comment was concerning the "to many days off for schools" remark of the person who posted above me. And never remarked about days off for Holidays.

As to the Holidays off, don't put words in my mouth I did not say. I am 100% behind all Veterans of this country, and would never put them down in any way; because I am from a military family. And we have had to deal with the he ll of losing a family member while they were serving our country.

And, as to your comment about "this guy"; that is your choice to feel hatred that way; but it is not mine. I hate no one just because of the color of their skin, it is what is inside them that makes them who they are; not their skin color.

Can't wait for the race card to be played on this one. It is definitely racist that the kids didn't have a free day off considering there are other holidays that are more important that they should have off instead. But what to you expect? They luv dem handouts.
I am going out on a limb on this one, "what other holidays" are more important than recognizing, peace, hope, and unity? Had you stated decrease their spring break, I would have thought "wow" this person is very intelligent, but no, you said something about race and the kids having a day off. The children seem to get into things they are not suppose to when they have to much time off.

What about all these so called "Professional Development Days" that the kids are out of school? CPS seems to have one every grading period.

Ok, maybe not MORE important but JUST AS important. In my opinion, anyway. I'm not specifically saying MLK day isn't worthy of recognition, because it is.

My main point, however, isn't the 'worth' of the day, but that if some schools are out for a specific holiday, then all of them should be. Many people feel that kids don't get enough schooling, too many days off, etc. I personally feel that it isn't the QUANTITY of education that's lacking in this country, it's the QUALITY.

I have absolutely no problem with city and state workers getting a paid day off for this important holiday, they spend our tax dollars the way they see best fits.

This is reverse discrimination at its finest. It's not okay now to go to school on a black holiday. As far as I'm concerned this holiday is the only think MLK was good for...a day off of work. I guess the poor blacks would rather the days be made up on white holidays such as Christmas, since they have Kwanza, July 4th since no blacks fought in the war of 1776 and President's Day. Most blacks are a disgrace to the memory of MLK and what he wanted his people to become. You are farther from the Dream than you ever were due to your thug mentality and disrepect for human life. I think even MLK would prefer children went to school than taking a day off for his name sake.

I'm personally not being discriminative. I'm just being fair. If they want to STOP letting kids out of school for this [ahem]'holiday', I have no problem with that. What I'm saying is if most kids get the 'holiday' off, then all of them should.

All or nothing.

What troubles me is that you're right; if blacks really saw each other as 'brotha and sista' then why are they killing each other? Most of the crime in this city comes from the predominantly black neighborhoods - brotha killing brotha. Again and and again and again. This BS of them sticking together and standing up for each each other is just that - BS.

m l king would rather the kids be in school trying to learn and to become all they can be, rather than sleeping till noon and playing video games. he was a highly intelligent man who valued education.

There was no "war of 1776". The American Revolution was fought between the years of 1775 and 1783. There were, in facts, blacks that served... on both sides. Slaves and black indentured servants were offered their freedom in exchange for willingly joining the Continental army and serving a specific amount of time... we were pretty heavily outnumbered after all.

If you're going to attempt to use American history to cover your racism, please at least get the historical aspects correct.

Although, I do agree that Dr. King would be completely appalled to see how young black people today disregard the educational opportunities he fought so hard to ensure they would have.

The state requires that teachers have ongoing professional development. It happens in every district. Students must attend 180 days of school by state law. Period.

And teachers only 150.

Maybe you know - what exactly is 'professional development?' What kind of expensive professional cruise-ins do you attend on a single day that takes a day of education away from our kids? Or is it more like a 'mental health' day negotiated for you by your union?

That day off every grading period doesn't seem to improve the numbers any.

The United States has now fallen to #26 in the educational system rankings of the world. Yes, there are 25 countries that have an educational system that is better than ours and 25 countries who's kids are more educated.

The problem with America is the kids don't have enough school days. They get an entire summer off where they lose at least 35% of what they learned the year before, they get snow days, holidays...you name it. Are they ever in school?

Kids in China go to school from 8-6 Mon-Fri and only get a few weeks off the entire year. My neighbor just moved here from China. The wife is a neurologist and her husband is also a doctor. Both of their kids have over a 4.0 and have skipped several grades in certain subjects. These kids will take our kids jobs and college scholarships! Let's face it, the educational system in America sucks!

Why do you think people from other countries are taking all of our college scholarships and jobs in the United States? Well hold on. THis will get worse.

DO YOU THINK MARTIN LUTHER KING WOULD WANT THIS? I think he would want our kids in school. Thank you Martin Luther King for all that you did for us.
