I agree, except the case was made just because the Wal-mart team made an issue of their charity giving. As it turned out in the public hearing is that Wal-mart took credit for giving the ENTIRE amounts collected on their property. Yes, that's right. When they allow a charity event on sight, they ask how much was collected, then they use those numbers and add to what their employees give and the corporation to come up with the total. That was the point that Dickey boy was making compared to the amount of money raised for United Way in the county since Wal-Mart came to Gastonia compared to how much corporation actually contributed. The numbers were very enlightening. It is called Wal-mart accounting. The money raised by other companies are the amounts those companies such as Dicky boy's business gave itself. He didn't add that of everyone walking by the front door or his employees. Integrity is a huge measurement that many give little attention to. Dicky boy did good that night! Ol' Irl needs to listen and not talk, many times funny little man that he is...by-the-way, at that public hearing where Dicky boy had that stroke of charisma, there were attorney's and accountants that supported the measurement. And to the previous post, it is not how much you give but from where it comes. Wal-mart seems to take it in and then take credit for it....smaller companies just give and move on. Wal-mart attorney and spokesman brought it up. It is amazing how Irl is still trying to be the big man for Wal-mart. Give it up funny little man. Wal-mart is here...Dickey boy, if you turn out to be right on this one it is a sad day for Belmont and for Toole's integrity, if you turn out to be wrong then it means your charisma is tarnished forever. What have you gained? Is this an effort to just say to the electorate, "see there you should have voted for me"? What a weenie thing to do...
Did you try to stop it and now shop there? What do you think about Dick's infamous tape measuring stunt? Is Walmart the demise of our fair town? Did Walmart save your family's Christmas by employing uncle Bill and offering your family low low prices? Did you slip and fall at Walmart? Are you the lady beating her baby in Walmart everytime I try to shop there?

Let's talk about Walmart! Who doesn't love it?

As always the buglers of the Wal Mart Monster Alert whine about how FREE ENTERPRISE isn't acting like they want it to.

If Wal Mart has or will put you out of business then its your fault and you forgot the golden rule of free enterprise Capitalism.

Did Wal Mart put School Resources out of business?

Or did the owner?

The free enterprise system requires constant change and alterations to adjust to the consumer's needs and tastes.

Does Belmont have a vision for this future?

Nope.

Look at downtown. Its not the bustling center of commerce it was meant to be. Its a dinosaur of the old economy with cliches and over-priced goods.

Don;t blame Wal-Mart for your problems.

Quit whining and crying.

Adapt and Overcome.

It is the free enterprise, the walk of nature, God's Way.

Get it? God, Nature, Free Enterprise.

Take out the defamers and its what you get.

WM is one of those love/hate things. People love the selection and the prices. But, you have to do a cost/benefit analysis. Does it make the community better? In some ways yes, and in some ways no.

The " put the poor mill to work" argument is ludicrous. I'd like to know the percentage of employees who ever worked in a mill...and I'd like to know how many actually LIVE in Belmont. I know some personally who do NOT.

Having Walmart has NOT lowered my tax rate...it has NOT lowered my water bill. If anything, it will raise my tax rate because of the extra police and resources needed to cover the CONSTANT police calls to that property.

I know there are good people working there. They have some good merchandise and no body can beat their grocery prices. But, I'd take a more serene life any day over the convenience.

I HATE the circus atmosphere in there!

I wish they had not come.

actually, he's right. a long-standing corporate strategy. And very cost effective.

they, family dollar, dollar general all have the same consumer in mind. although wal-mart has been upwardly mobile.

you are what you buy.

they make jokes about what we will buy. they laugh at the demographics, gut-busting jokes about the lack of dental care.

I agree. If you don't like it, don't go. You have no right to dictate to the rest of us where we can shop.

Why would you patronize a business of which you don't approve? If Wal-Mart is so unpleasant then shop elsewhere! Personally I like it.

Shoplifting, assaults in the parking lot ( and in the store), robbery, drunk and disorderly conduct, car break-ins and car thefts, etc.... Not long ago a man went into the restroom and another guy in the next stall whacked him on the head with a wrench over the top of the next stall.

Problems? Traffic, pollution run-off from the parking lots and garden area ( Lowe's and WM), noise, a lot of the meanness in that area that police have to deal with are due to the 24 hour open nature of the store - it's a magnet for it.Not to mention local business ARE, HAVE, and will take a hit from it.

Listen, it's a nice store with some good people working there - but I think the trade-off in quality of life in our community was NOT worth having it. We're THREE MILES from the other Wal-Mart in Gastonia! Other types of businesses could have gone there that would not have had the impact this one has had.

Fact is - it's there now and will be for some time to come. I guess we'll have to make the best of it. But, it did not help quality of life in the area.

Yeah just wait until your car window gets smashed and your car gets robbed.
They won't even allow you or the police to view the security survalience tapes without a court order, and by the time that doesn't ever happen you are just fked. wal-mart sucks and deserves to be ripped off especially their stupid self checkers.

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Virgo

Unfortunately, this looks like being another difficult day, and, as Mars turns retrograde, certain people are quick to take offence or raise their voices. Make sure you aren't adding to the tension by doing or saying something that's provocative or even downright insulting. If you get involved in a shouting match it will be difficult to stop and you could say some nasty things in the heat of the moment.
