Long time Belmont Moose Lodge (BML) member here, reading all the rumors and speculations about it being shut down.

While I like the Belmont Moose Lodge, IMHO: having it shut down actually might not be a bad thing.

Why?

Their ruling organization - Mooseheart International - has just never impressed me as an organization that I would want to be a part of or participate in.

Yes - the local Belmont Lodge does quite a bit of good for the local community, and Mooseheart International runs an orphanage up there in Illinois, etc., but quite frankly there are a lot of other non profit organizations that do a much better job of those types of things with far less drama for their members.

While it would be a catastrophic for those who work there: what would happen if they shut down?

Given the current Real Estate market: Personally, I think the property would sit empty for a year or two, and then an Elks, American Legion, or some other Non Profit would scoop it up at a bargain price, and we'd all be right back in there.

What y'all think?

My husband was a member until he died. It is a sad thing for these old groups to close but time does march on. You can't get the younger people to participate and us old ones just die off. I will say that my husband complained all the time about the organization and how unorganized it was. He also did not like the amount of money that went to each cause and how much they kept. But that is just my opinion.

My condolences for your loss, and thanks for sharing your opinion.

I agree with your late husband.

I also send my condolences for your loss. Your late husband was correct in his concern for the way money was distributed through the causes sponsored by The Lodge. It has always been poorly administrated, poorly led, and it could have had a much more positive impact on the community than it chooses to. Definitley could use some young fresh blood at the helm, but it is a dying breed and its image is not one that attracts the young visionaries today. Every good thing in this world can become tarnished by those who decide to stray from the better way of doing things and conducting business and lives. Here is a little known factual footnote -- The Salvation Army is THE BIGGEST depositor at the bank that they do business with, and the percentage of money that goes to its causes is the highest of any organization of its type. That is something to chew on and think about before you decide where to put your charitable efforts.

Please give us some facts to back up the statement that the BML does quite a bit of good for the local community. Mooseheart and Moosehaven for retirees and orphans respectivly are not being funded by the Belmont lodge because they owe $32,000 that should go to those causes.

MalcolmIII: I will second that request for facts about any donations and/or activities made by LOOM(Loyal Order Of Moose)Belmont 1749 to benefit the local community. While they brag about what the Moose organization stands for, THE LOCAL LODGE CONTRIBUTES LITTLE OR NOTHING EITHER LOCALLY OR NATIONALLY.

again Belmont moose members, and of course the "honorable, repectable, and trustworthy" charter members, and administrator(s); you are giving the honest and decent Moose Lodges across the country a bad reputation for all the good they truly do for example: top 5 in the country who contribute the most and are NOT in debt are 1) GA 2) MA/RI 3) OK 4) CT 5) TX..Moose Eye in Belmont is an Eye Soar..check out IOOF

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Monday are all scheduled poker nights. There are also machines for gambling and if you know the right people, you can get a pil or somthing to suck up your nose.

I do not understand. This is an amazingly fabulous organization. They do so much for the community. We needs more Moose Lodge's in the area not less. These good men of the Order of the Moose give with all of their hearts. You people should be ashamed for saying such negative things about it.Then there are all the other fine organizations too.We need more legal illegal operation to better suit our needs as a world status community.I will say it again " An amazingly fabulous organization".

I have never heard anything about drugs there and I have been
a member there for 2 years. I don't get why people have to try and bash the lodge. If you don't like it don't go there. Every place has it's up and downs. I will say that it does have it's fair share of a**holes but they are every where. There is also some great people that I have met there. But diffrent strokes for diffrent folks. I know that I enjoy myself when I go there a couple x a week. And a nother comment about the drugs is it takes one to use drugs to know where to get drugs.

I heard that the BML is trying to shut this topix page down. I think they are getting a little bit upset about some truth that is being told.. Such as being in debt 32,000 and possibly having to shut down.
