rode through downtown this week and am glad to say it looks like its getting its due. Lots of empty parking spaces, empty stores and empty buildings. Reminds me of Mount Holly of 2010, but worse. You can tell when something has seen its day and then just died. Mount Holly is on the upswing and Belmont downtown is fading faster than it was revitalized. Unless you go for used merchandise (GGs) or antiques (Second Fiddle) or tired old orange juice (Soda Shop), there aint much to brag about there. Friends still caters to the 'rode hard and hung up wet" crowd and Johnny Bs may have good pizza, but no personality there. Dare walk into the General Store (I still say the Mercantile) and you still have Christmas crap and a bum cashier just watching the clock or handing out bathroom keys. Jolis is closed and the trains are decorated with the trash from Sammys and Jax. Where are the lavecchias when you need them? Clean up your act Friendly Tim and join the merchants club or something. Im no fan of MrL but his properties and businesses are gone to shit.

only things happening on Main Street are the P's. Popcorn, Piccolo, and Pizza Places. Jax still rocks on, Tastebuds will survive with the monthly holiday incentives and Piccolo looks busier everyday. Maybe its time to focus on that side of Main street. Even Olde Stone has seen its prime and with all the bad publicity around it and the manager suing the lavecchias, its not good for business. wont be going there for any Vday dinner with all that bad blood made public.

Downtown caters to booze and bangles - not much to attract a repeat following for things people need. It's a facade. Not much stability in that.

Don't give up on Downtown Belmont so quickly. Once the LaVecchia properties have new owners and that won't be long either by voluntary sale or court action, things will turn around quickly. Jolie changed location and Old Stone is doing fine. The LaVecchias simply ran out of money.

both not true. Jolie is in one of the lavecchia other buildings and rumor is they have already rented the old space. Old Stone is not doing fine by any means and I know because I work there. Sales are way down and the manager/partner cant even fake it anymore. they are holding their breath waiting for Lavecchia to buy himout and it wont happen.Anyone see the sign for cottage keepers? nobodys buying buildings right now or for a long time. if the properties go to the banks, good bye belmont. Be real people, unless you work downtown you don't know anything.

I don't get out much, but I went downtown on a Wednesday evening 2 weeks ago, and everything was PACKED.

There may be one or two places having a slump, but this thread is false doom and gloom.

are you sure you were in the right place? lots of cars doesnt mean lots of business and im sure you didnt go into all the BARS to take attendance. Even Happy Dog seems dead and theyre one of our hang out places. Any empty building on main street are bad for business and I see two new ones already. Sammys is ususally consistent, but Old Stone is not the only place in town anymore and the legal stuff theyre going through is keeping people away. One of my neighbors daughter works there and shes looking for a second job and noones hiring.

I've only actually been inside of OldStone once and that was for the Belmont Rocks bar crawl thing. Having worked at a steak house once upon a time, I know just how I like mine.

On a Wednesday night in January, we couldn't find a free table at Jax, so we went to Friends which was very lively.

The two people with me from other parts of Gaston County couldn't believe how lively downtown Belmont is, and here are you all talking about how it is dead.

Happy Dog Cafe is not dead and is actually expanding with two new locations in VA and SC mid-Summer. Brian Anderson is driven and is taking Happy Dog Cafe to the next level: National. The only industry that is growing in this economy is the pet supply industry. I heard that he has had a lot of bids to expand Happy Dog via franchises. Way to go Belmont. A local success story.

Knowing the "bankers?"

#1-Bankers discussing other peoples business with you? Felony.
#2-Do you think bankers would tell you any truth? Stupid
#3-What Bankers? Most of L's crap is owner financed by Stowe. Ignorant.

You are right about the doom & gloom on here. We were in the Old Stone last night. Business as usual. It is still the only decent place to eat in Belmont.

If people would concentrate on their own lives, they just might see something they enjoy or hell, LIKE for that matter. Quit with all the speculation and nonsense. For the record, 2 of 11 buildings are financed through Stowe Period. One was financed through a bottomfeeder loanshark on Main. Griffen Keel anyone!

I know of only one building that was only partially financed by the sellers. Which two are you talking about.
