Although I understand that Lakewood's new mayor is under tremendous pressure from an organized group of constituents, there is no excuse for blatantly defying the order of a county level Superior Court judge who is properly applying statewide and nationwide constitutions/declarations, laws, policies, and court decisions proclaiming and upholding the right of all persons to pursue life, liberty, and happiness - and establishing the obligation of society, through its government, to help the poor and provide for the general wellbeing of the people.
It is absurdly difficult for most people in need to get housing assistance in New Jersey - and particularly in Ocean County. People who have income of more than $140 per month ($210 if officially disabled) are told they `make too much' to qualify for either emergency or longer-term housing! Those who qualify for limited long-term public housing and manage to get an application processed still face a waiting list of many months - with no type of housing provided in the meantime! This apparently not being deemed harsh enough, authorities then persecute these abandoned people by trying to stop their attempts to survive - even in the woods!
It is indefensibly hypocritical that so many people are enraged by violation of lesser laws and codes, yet are just fine with violation of the law at its highest levels.
The Court ruled that, at least until given decent options, these people shall be allowed to stay in their Lakewood `Tent City` location. Any attempt to undermine the letter or the spirit of this Court's ruling is as un-American as it is cowardly.
