I moved here 8 years ago. Now I am stuck. I have lived among ( lived!! Not visited) 16 different cultures, and Nations. I was unaware of this culture of theifs, liars, and poverty. I will soon leave here ( with the other 5000 people who left in the past 5 years)and will remember this place as a "experiment" that went awrry, or as planned. Something is gravely wrong with the people here.
Billy Grahm said in 1943, while making a stop in Altoona, " There is a dark cloud ( accursed) here, I will never come back". And he never did. Nor will I. |

If it's hurting ,I am not seeing it;especially when I drive from Camp Hill to Carlisle--there's construction everywhere.

I rarely go to the other side of the river;one of the first things I noticed in the Harrisburg Patriot was the amount of violence on the other (east) side of the Susquehanna.

i used to live there myself, and it is a dying town with no vision and most of the residents are strange.

"WAS" is the operative word here. Yes it "was" a nice place and so was the rest of the surrounding areas. But as things progressed elsewhere Altoona & the surrounding areas failed to grow with it. We moved from the area 35 years ago and now when we go back there to visit it's like going back 35 years in time. Nothing has changed. The people as someone said are strange....I have to agree with them they are mighty strange people back there. STRANGE is putting it mildly! |

I started this thread. Sorry. For awhile it was dormant. Yes, I too was told Altoona once had a pretty good history. Long gone. This place is economically and morally destitude. Again I hope to sell my home this spring-summer, and get out of here. God, I hope.
How long did you live here? How long since you were here.? Your expectations and mine may be worlds apart. The "wrong area" is the City. The "wrong people" is the majority of people. I want a good paying job. Not some minimum wage loser job. There was a good job base here. No more. There were good manufacturing jobs here. No more. Face it, the current status is bad. And the future is worse. |

Suitor, I can't help but notice all your posts list an ISP location in Cambria County and about 20 miles from Altoona.
People are correct, though. I have been closely connected with the city of Altoona for over 10 years between going to College here and working here. Over those ten years their has been a swift increase in drug use and drug violence. Too many people seem to have a self-centered mentality and are only looking out for themselves and working harder to see how they can "get over" on someone than just being a decent, caring, contributing memer of society. |
Yeah, that's why I moved to Cumberland County anyhow----a good paying job.---I thought I had it made when I moved back to Blair County after 11 years of working out of state and got to getting jobs out of a union hall but after 3 years found out it was the same old thing---hardly any work----
There are decent members of society here. I have lived,( not visited) all over the world among many culturers. This place is accursed. I will have to dump my home for a loss, and move this summer. |

This is to suitor...
I hope you don't consider moving to Florida or you will find yourself in the same situation or worse. Unless you are a Doctor, a Lawyer, an Automobile Mechanic, a Plumber or any of those mostly dishonest careers(unfortunately)you shouldn't even consider moving to florida. I know! I live here! When I moved almost 6 years ago things weren't so bad economically and the houses were not that expensive. Today a decent shack(and I call them shack because a 50,000 dollar home in Altoona looks and is in better condition than in Florida)relatively decent you will have to pay at least 275,000 dollars or more. You'll be in shock to see what you will be buying for that. But if you can afford it, the taxes and insurance will eventually make you go on foreclosure. Unless... like I mention before, you are willing to go dishonest and practice one of the trades that I mentioned above... Good luck!! |
