Precious little soul. I pray for the family. I'm glad someone is investigating. How does a 16-month old baby accidentally fall into an above-ground pool?(As far as that goes, even into an in-ground pool. You should never ever take your eyes off the little ones ,,, they are not accessories ,,,)

Prayers for the boy and the family. Let's not try to pretend that we know more than this is a tragic event for all involved. Children do get out of sight, accidents happen and it all can happen in the blink of an eye. I cross my fingers that it's nothing more than this but in the meantime, let's allow the family to have their peace and grieve for their lost little angel.

First, I feel so sorry for that family. Its one of the most horrible things that could happen.

I have an above ground pool and grew up with one. The first thing we learned was not to go near the pool unless you're with an adult or older sibling. One thing that sounds a little fishy is the dad said that it was only minutes that he didn't notic his baby. It most have been longer than a few minutes. This was a 1 year old. How did he get out of the house without him noticing or hearing a door open. In our house our doors are always locked, even when we are home. Its one way to avoid a child from getting out of the house. Its easy for a little one to be out of your site, but come on, be a responsible parent, especially since they had a pool. This obviously was a horrible lesson to learn. Its not the swimming pool that kills, its the lack of supervision.

Let's wait for the fact before we jump the gun here. And yes, if there is an investigation like this, the children are always taken away from the family.

Having an above ground pool myself, every precaution must be taken. That's why Northlake ordinance states that the ladder must not be accessible when not in use (steps tilt up so they can't be used) or a locked gate must be installed if a deck accesses the pool.

lots of above ground pool are built adjacent to decks that are walkouts from the house. It's not that much harder for this to happen innocently with an above gorund pool than an ingound pool.

You people are speculating and over reacting. Accidents happen, even to babies.

When I had my deck attached to my pool, it could be accessed thru the patio door. I had small children at the time, so I built a portable gate that blocked access to the pool.

I would not presume to judge the parents at this time. It is literally impossible to keep track of some toddlers every second of the day. Removing the other children seems to be adding more chaos to that family.

This is a tragedy. We due not know what happened at this point. Ther may or may not be negligence involved. But my question is this. Does it make you feel better to judge in such harsh terms a situation you know so little about.

I agree it is a sad time for the family.
I also agree with Nancy Mortonthal: the education level of most people on these forums really sucks. I assume most of you are the products of the Chicago Public Schools. No sense of spelling, nor of grammar. Very sad!
