It breaks my heart. I grew up in the Bellport/ East Patchogue area, right on Amsterdam Avenue. The neighborhood gets worse and worse every passing year and I've seen friends and children of friends die on the streets like this. Suffolk county needs to stop ignoring the problem, get their head out of their a** and get this community the help it is crying out for. Hiring cops who want to abuse their power and be corrupt isn't the way to deal with this. It's sad that Bellport has become one of the worse neighborhoods in the Island. It's sad, I feel safer living in the Bronx now. And just because someone lives in North Bellport doesn't mean they are drug dealers, thugs, on welfare or up to no good. There is no affordable housing left on Long Island and people are forced to live in these conditions. People, stop complaining about how much of an headache this community is and how the people who live in it are "savages". How much can these "minority" communities accomplish when there is no state funding, no county funding and police who would rather shoot you dead and blame it on an accident or claim you had pulled a weapon on them? Suffolk has ignored North Bellport for years and considered it a pain in their rear rather than try to salvage this community and the people in it.

Where's Al Sharpton now? If it were a white person doing the shooting, he'd be protesting. Too bad the bullet did'nt find Sharpton. Don't blame the county and state officials on turning their heads. Like most areas, it takes the community to uphold a good name and neigborhood, homeowners who take pride in their houses. Drive around this area, at your own risk of course, and tell me they take care of their neighborhood.

It's all on you! Answer your own questions. If you want NB to change YOU go back and work for change. Don't sit on your soapbox and bemoan that it's governments responsibility to improve your neighborhood. Where I live, the only vestige of government involvement is the garbage collection and the snow plows, other than that we are on our own to succeed or fail. Despite how they try government can't legislate common sense or good parenting skills. It must come from within, or to borrow a phrase from the hero of the ignorant democrats "it takes a village". NB will get better when Mrs.(emphasis on Mrs. denoting marriage) Scruggs scolds Mrs. Harris' children for doing wrong and vice versa. BUT since the community as a whole fails miserable to do that, I guess you reap what you sow. Newsflash, the cops don't ride doubled up in my neighborhood because the parents and residents "police" themselves and their own children (for the most part). NB starts to do a wiz bang job of "policing their own" and the police will not have to do your work for you. The blame lies within the community, not the government. Let me put this in a racial dimension. White folks from adjoining communities aren't flocking to NB in droves dumping trash, dealing drugs doing drive by shootings, neglecting their children in an effort to keep the black or brown man down. You are doing it all on your own. It's the same with housing projects in NYC. White kids from the suburbs don't wake up one day and decide "gee lets go to the projects to urinate and deficate in the stairwells and elevators and do drugs on the rooftops". The government doesn't pay white folk to make the projects nearly inhabitable, it's the filthy savages who do it to themselves. The problem and the solution to NB lies in the mirrors therein. Last of all YOU, who writes fairly articulately of the problems in NB, fled which tells a lot about either your character or the realization of the magnitude of the problem.
I was all set to tear Melissa a new one, but you said it all. Thanks.

Sorry for your pain Ms. Brame. It is not fair, that your son was killed. I have a fifteen year old also, that goes to Bellport High. I am sickened that it could happen so fast, without warning. I really only wanted to say I am praying for you and your family. I wish that the other kids who witnessed this horror, will come forward, and say what they know. God Bless Alvin!

Miss Brame God be with you in your time of need. If ever a day I can no longer control my teenager, I guess we will read about a Mother going berserk. In this day we have to love our children enough. Enough to do whatever it takes to save them from the mean streets. I told my son when he was a young boy, his concern would be the consequences if I witnessed him on any corner. I am not afraid to have Children Service at my door, I am afraid however, to bury my child. I am not a single parent, although I knew the day would come that my son would grow taller and stronger than myself. I always seized the opportunity to let him know, I who stand at 5 feet was the boss, now and forever. Some children are reared, and some just grow up, stop letting our children grow up please, and raise then up.

A National night against crime? I never heard of it. Sounds more like a local night to reinforce lawlessness. Nice how his"buddies" took off after he got wasted and left him for dead. Yep that's how I would raise my kid. Face it. These "people" just get worse with every Generaton. There is no hope for them. They have been lost. All they care about is having the easy life with lots of quick cash and bling to show off. Yes they are as stupid as they lead us to believe.

Nice post but you're wasting your time. They don't"get it". As long as they keep blaming it on everyone else this will perpetuate for Generation after Generation.Lincoln must be rolling in his grave.

It's called National Night Out. However, it's NOT held at midnight but in the early evening after dinner. Booths are set up around a development. McGruff the crime dog shows up as well as some police to talk to the kids-balloons, dog treats, people treats, information about neighborhood watch etc.. Shooting however, is not on the agenda-

Call it the Murphy Brown Syndrome!! Everyone laughed at then V.P. when he stated that glorifying single parent families was no good for the future of our country. Well here you go. As great a mom as Ms. Brame may have been there is no way in hell that you can raise SIX kids as a single parent. The breakdown of the 2 parent family in our society and especially in the poorer sections I would have to say is one if not THE greatest reason for this wave of shootings and sensless murders.

I live in Bellport Village and have to drive thru N. Bellport via Station Road every night on my way home from work. Perhaps the police officers should not be chatting in the median on Sunrise HWY every night (in between Hospital Rd and CR 101) and patroling N. Bellport to clean it up, then worry about traffic violations.
My heart goes out to the family of the lost youth.

i live in the village too, born and raised. when i went thru the school system there, i lost a few friends to violence in that area. the ONLY THING that will change the area is the residents saying enough is enough and banding together to make it better. and there just is not enough of that. what about a neighborhood watch, patrolling the area? it's not the cops fault, it's not anyone else's fault, but their own. where has personal responsibility gone?

Why didn't Newsday report that the man who did this was an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT? His name is Jose Carranza and Fox News dared to report to the American citizens the WHOLE story, not just parts that serve Newday's intrests. This man is in OUR COUNTRY ILLEGALLY and it would be in Newsday's best interests to report whole stories, he has raped a five-year old child, he threatened that child's parents that if they testified he would kill them - why is Newsday the only media outlet afraid to report the WHOLE STORY? Readers of Newsday - read the Post, they give the ENTIRE stories!

SAVAGES! What kind of friends are those!?! They leave their "friend" lying in the street like a peice of trash? That just goes to show you all you need to know about the "thug" life style. When are the minority communities going to wake up and start really working towards a solution? Where is Jesse Jackass and the rev. I.B. Sharp to stand up and be "outraged"?
Right on. It’s getting ridiculous. But it’s nothing new. It’s just spreading to other neighborhoods. We had the same crap going on back in the early 90’s when I was growing up. Same shit different neighborhood.

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Taurus

Someone is very short-tempered, and they're liable to fly off the handle at a moment's notice. Maybe they're feeling vulnerable in some way or are desperately trying to defend what they see as their territory. Be sensitive to this and don't goad them into being even more irritable or upset than they are already. Frankly, it's just not worth it.
