It's an oft-repeated trope that Thanksgiving is the time of the year that people who don't necessarily like each other get together just because they are family.

"And of course there are our schools, overseen by hard-working board members and supervisory unions and staffed by dedicated teachers and para-educators, who are often supported by parent volunteers."

Oh yes let's remember the teachers that we love so much when they do a good job of teaching our children. But let us not forget that teaching is a job. It is a well paid job with great benefits and a great retirement. It is a white collar job which is virtually guraranteed once you get it.

So if we are going to thank the teachers especially for doing the job they are paid to do then let's toss out a hearty thankyou to all the wokers in our society who work hard support their families and get paid less than our teachers do. Let's remember the workers in the bread factory. Let's remember the lumber handlers. Let's remember all those jobs who would trade jobs with a teacher in a heartbeat if they could.

May God stand before you, to the left, to the right, behind you, below you, and above you. May he guide your hands in the work that you do to serve and protect others. May he comfort the sick, injured, lonely and poor. May he bring peace to the dying and hope to the living. May God be with.

This is a little prayer that I wrote years ago and I say it each time an emergency vehicle passes me.

Everything the bible screams at us, altruism and godís love is ďnotĒ supposed to make you feel so good and thankful that you close your eyes and your conscience to the world....godís love is supposed to make you open your eyes and change the world. It is suppose to give you the faith to look where your eyes fear to go.

I will make the case when you feel something so painful and hurtful you donít think you will survive the week....that is godís real love.

It is the only way we really move towards enlightenment...the sprinkle of good and bad the world dishes up for us each day.

All this feel good thanksgiving around the last thurday in is just consumerism.
