1 student injured in Bremerton elementary school shooting

BREMERTON, Wash.- Authorities say a shooting at a Washington state elementary school appears to have left a third-grade student with a gunshot wound in her abdomen.

Police say the injured girl has been airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center and that a third-grade boy has been detained.

Bremerton police and emergency crews were dispatched to the school at around 1:30 p.m. in response to a call that a student was shot and injured by another student. Authorities say a firearm was found in a classroom.

The Bremerton Schools superintendent's office says the school was locked down after the shooting, but the lock down was lifted a short while later.
Live television news footage showed students leaving the school. Police say parents were being allowed to pick up their kids on foot.

Boy, 5, brings unloaded gun to Ohio day care

Published February 22, 2012
| Associated Press

TOLEDO, Ohio Police say a 5-year-old boy in Ohio brought an unloaded handgun to the day care he attends after finding it in the grass at his apartment complex.

Police say the child thought it was a cigarette lighter and was showing it to friends at My First Days Day Care in Toledo when administrators saw the weapon.

The Blade newspaper reports Wednesday that about 20 children were at the day care at the time.

Day care administrator Montarey Barbour says employees checked the gun to make sure it was not loaded, then called police.

Police say the boy told his mother about the gun, and while she failed to check it closely, no charges are likely.

8-year-old girl critically wounded in shooting at Washington school
KING-TV

An air ambulance is seen flying the victim to a trauma center in Seattle.

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

Updated at 7 p.m. ET: An 8-year-old girl was critically wounded Wednesday in a shooting incident at an elementary school in Bremerton, Wash., authorities said. The school district said it appeared the shooting was an accident.

Armin Jahr Elementary School in Bremerton, about 15 miles west of Seattle, was just letting out for the day when the victim, a girl in the third grade, was shot about 1:29 p.m. local time (4:29 p.m. ET), Bremerton police said. Police said it was too early to speculate about the circumstances, but a spokeswoman for the school district told NBC station KING of Seattle that the shooting appeared to have been an accident.

The girl, identified as Amina Bowmen, was in critical condition at Harborview trauma center in Seattle with a gunshot wound in the stomach, the hospital said. She was being taken into exploratory surgery.

Bremerton police Lt. Peter Fisher said the gun used in the shooting had been recovered and that a second student, believed to have been the shooter, was being held for questioning. The school district said that student is 9 years old and in the third grade.

Kerri Johnson, the mother of a fourth-grader at the school, which is named for a former district superintendent, said her son heard the shot.

Hes really scared, but hes fine, Johnson said.

"Critically wounded" sounds more specific than "injured".

Strange...the article about the girl being shot no longer appears on Bellingham Herald site. Or maybe they're preparing to post an updated article. Here's a snippet about it....
CBS News 2/23/2012:
...."There have been shootings at schools that involved younger children. In 2000, 6-year-old Kayla Rolland, a Michigan first-grader, was fatally shot by a 6-year-old classmate who brought a gun from home. Last year, a 6-year-old kindergartner at a Houston elementary school accidentally fired a gun as he was showing it off to friends, injuring three students."...

No...two hours later that article still is not on the Bellingham Herald online site. Nor was it on front page of Herald even though it's national news.
