Neb. abortion doctor to practice where laws permit

Nov 10, 2010 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Seattle Times

A Nebraska doctor who is one of few in the U.S. performing late-term abortions said Wednesday he wants to ensure more women have access to the procedure by expanding to states where it remains legal.

IMO, what this article really does is give the lie to the "late term abortions are rare" canard.

Carhart can do everything he could before the new law passed, just not the "rare" LTAs. Mind you, Nebraska isn't very populous.

So-now he wants to open new shops in two or three states (!) to grab back the LTA market, and making sure that the papers get the word out for him that he's doing it. Must be some big, big money in that-obviously a considerable demand for the service. Must have been a pretty big demand in the Omaha area if he's gonna open one up in Council Bluffs.

Unless someone wants to make the case that Carhart's the reincarnation of Albert Schweitzer, looks like LTA's aren't "rare" and they're big bank.

You failed statistics, didn't you?

1.3% IS rare.

I know. What is it about 1.3% of women in the US is a lot of people does this person not get?

I hated math. I stopped taking it as soon as I could. Even I know this.

Then, why does Carhart think he can recoup his investment if it's so "rare"?

Did he hate math too?

I meant that it is q lot of people even though it is a small percentage. Rare equals 1.3% but 1.3% is a lot of people because our populations is large. About 150,000,000 women.

Don't tell me-tell the Doctor. He's the one planning a large investment, not me. HE must think there's money in it. He's been in NE for a very long time, and just now is he planning expansion. Can't be mere conicidence that it comes only after LTA's were shut off in Nebraska, can it?

Do you know ANY doctor who does not expect a return on his investment?

That has nothing to do with the fact that LTAs are rare. 1.3% of the women having abortions IS rare.

You're right, your math sucks.

It's 1.3% of all *abortions*, not of the entire female population.

With an average of 800,000 abortions in the U.S., this translates to about 10,400.

Sure, it's still a large number. But keep in mind they are *only* performed in order to save the life of the "mother" or if the fetus is dying or horribly deformed and would die shortly thereafter.

They are *wanted* pregnancies that have gone tragically wrong. Thus, I can't stand it when these women are vilified. It must be a horrible place to be and thing to go through :(

Carhart's moral fibre isn't really of concern in this discussion; the point I'm trying to make is that the LTA business, said to be "rare", is apparently sufficiently profitable for him to invest a great deal of money to expand his operations to places where he can continue to provide it.

I heard he's going to advertise in order to drum up business to increase the return on his investment.

Once women learn that they, too, can have a horrific late term abortion for their perfectly healthy babies they'll be flocking to his facility.

Uh-huh.

Right-o.

You're not making sense. He operates in Nebraska will all the services he always did, but NOW, LTA's are out. That being the case, now he plans expansion to 2 or 3 states where he can offer LTAs.

Sounds like he's letting a lot of chips ride for something that's so "rare".

And you know that his motives are not to also to help women, how, exactly?

So, what's your explanation for the expansion and the timing? Carhart said it was to offer LTAs, so make sure whatever you make up counters his stated reasons.

He's expressed in interviews that he does what he does to help women who need that service. Just because it's rare doesn't mean it's not a needed service.
