My family and I lived in Green Meadows Apartments from 2007 - 2008. This was by far the longest year of my life. My husband and I were unfamiliar with the town of Belleville at the time, but the town itself was so convenient to his schooling. We searched a few properties and it seemed as though Green Meadows was the best for our budget and needs (i.e. Full-size washer and dryer, own entrance, etc).

From the moment we applied for the lease it all went downhill. The leasing consultant explained what subsidized housing was (very loosely and briefly) and assured us it was not Section-8 Housing. We submitted all the documents so they could determine if we met the income qualifications -- which we did. However, it took them almost 2 1/2 weeks to let us know if we had been approved. That should have been our first sign...

Once we set a move-in-date and showed up with our security deposit, we were informed we had to pay a $100 cleaning fee, which was not disclosed to us before that day. Also, the apartment they showed us was NOT the apartment they gave us. Once we got our keys and walked in we noticed there were dead bugs all over the floors. There was a crack from floor to ceiling that was not properly repaired. When I pulled the drawers out in the kitchen there was silverware that was left behind from the prior resident. So, needless to say we demanded our $100 cleaning fee back and thankfully they gave us no problems.

As we were moving our stuff (we were on the backside of the building, facing away from the parking lot) there were a few kids hanging out by the move-in truck. When we saw them again they were playing with my daughter's soccer ball (it was bright pink). Obviously these kids have no problems walking into a moving truck and stealing things!

Shortly after we moved in, my husband's catalytic converter was ripped from underneath his car. When we informed the office - "Oh, the other day someone walked out and their car was up on cinder blocks." We were PISSED! They did not inform any of us of this incident. Also, we were facing away from the parking lot, so every day I would pray nothing was wrong with my car when I'd go to leave for work.

Maintenance was slow. There was only 2 maintenance guys. 1 was extremely helpful and nice, the other just plain rude. It took almost 2 weeks for them to come in and "fix" (aka repaint) water damage in the ceiling.

I understand that there isn't much for kids to do, but they would be out running around past dark. There was a mandatory "curefew" of 8pm that was never enforced. There were multiple times where I saw young children hanging out in the parking lot with no adult supervision.

I took my daughter over to the playgorund which overlooks the other apartment complex next door. I immediately noticed there was a tan Malibu sitting in the parking lot with 4 teenagers just hanging out. I felt a little uncomfortable and I started to notice the Malibu more and more days after that. Come to find out, they were selling drugs.

My family and I were carrying in groceries one day and we saw a cop car come speeding up to the apartment next door. Next thing we know the cops are arresting someone. The next day all the contents of the apartment were strewn out on the front lawn.(Evicted) Residents and children were picking through their stuff as though it was theirs!

Anyway, long story short -- It's just not managed very well. Their "screening" process is not thorough. Obviously the person who was arrested fell through the cracks. Children are not supervised. Drug deals occur on property grounds near where children are playing. The structure of the building is not great. Bugs everywhere. Maintenace is slow. Safety is a huge issue.
