AS MUCH AS I HATE A LAWYER TO USE THESE KIND OF DEFENSE TACTICS, & GET A DEFENDANT FREED FOR A CRIME HE PROBABLY COMMITED, I HAVE TO ADMIRE HIM FOR DOING THE BEST JOB POSSIBLE FOR THAT DEFENDANT......THAT IS WHAT HE HAS SWORN TO DO.

Re: "It's evil"
Are you saying that a person charged with a crime should not have representation? Is everyone accused of a crime absolutely guilty? In the cases in the article, in most instances a crime was committed and the defendant probably had some type of culpability, and an acquittal can be frustrating. They may not be guilty of the actual offense charged. If a person dies it may not be a murder but could be another crime. If you or your child were charged with DUI or another crime would you not hire an attorney?

How this guy sleeps at night is a mystery. Of course there should be defense attorneys for those NOT PROVEN GUILTY. But these examples, except the last one with the DNA were absolutely guilty and he knew it. There is no justice for the victims with lawyers of this ilk in the courtroom.

Very sanctimonious of you Mark, isn't it nice to be the rare one that takes the unpopular high road? On the other hand, how about all the heinous, brutal killers like the famous O.J. whose acquittal was a lasting disgrace to the legal system, and those dishonest shysters who have made a shambles of our legal system? You O.K. with that?

I'm glad he speaks so proudly of the child rapist/murderer he let go and the wife/murderer who got off with millions in hubby's insurance money.

He can take comfort in the fact that he served his clients well and performed his duties impeccably as he rots in hell for eternity.

how come lawyers dont get charged with perjury in court. isnt lying in court a crime. these dirtbag lawyers need to have one of their children raped or murdered, and then watch the man/woman get aquitted of the crime..even if he witnessed the whole thing!!!!!

Newsday:

"He's delighted when a person has made a mistake but refuses to admit it on the stand, said Suffolk prosecutor Leonard Lato, who has gone up against Keahon more than once. Keahon will spend days leading the witness down a one-way street that dead-ends when he proves them to be a liar in front of the jury, Lato said.

When he defended serial killer Robert Shulman in 1998, the pretrial hearings took three months, with one detective's cross examination alone lasting 16 days."

__________

Surely Suffolk County ADA Lenny Lato is not suggesting that a Suffolk County police detective lied under oath?

He is sworn - note that - SWORN to zealously advocate for the goals of his client within the bounds of the law. He did not lie - the system says - State has to prove its case. If they can't - the defendant goes home. We set that system up over 200 years ago - borrowed from the English. When you complain - you are saying change the system. Be careful what you ask for: you could wind up with a State that locks you up with no defense just because someone said you did it.

If you want to fault someone - fault the State (police, experts, prosecutors) for screwing up the case.

Way to go Billy. I take my socks off to you...

Because they are careful. Criminal lawyers do not allow clients to tell them if they committed the crime - if they knew the client did it, the defense that the lawyer presented would be suborning perjury.

its important to have lawyers like this to help insure no innocent man gets convicted, if a guilty individual walks it can be blamed on the DA,

Hypocrites, ALL OF YOU who complain about an attorney doing his job to protect an accused under our Constitution. Hypocrites, because if any one of you get arrested and could afford it, he is the first guy you would call. Now crawl back to your caves.

Billy is no doubt a fine lawyer and many people I know say he is a good man. I, as a newspaper man, will not take certain peoples money for advertising at any cost. I dont know what is the bigger crime. The crimes that his clients often commit,or Bills willingness to help them go free. When I think on crime I want to see the victim. A guy with the victims head in his trunk has some explaining to do I would think. I have no idea why a lawyer would take such a case. There is your duty as an advocate, but isnt there a higher calling somewhere inside of lawyers? Like I said. I will not take some ads. But this is his choice. He will have to answer for his actions when he goes in front of the big judge. I wish him well.
