NY Gunman Who Shot Firemen Already Barred from Owning Guns

by Ben Shapiro 24 Dec 2012
While liberals on Twitter pointed at the shooting of four firefighters in upstate New York as evidence that more gun control is necessary, NBC News reports that the gunman, one William Spengler, was already banned from owning guns.
Spengler served 17 years in prison for killing his grandmother with a hammer in 1980. He was convicted only of manslaughter, and was paroled in 1998. It seems that stronger sentencing for convicted murderers might be a more worthwhile goal of liberals seeking to prevent gun violence.

Spengler shot the firefighters just before 6 a.m. ET in Webster, New York. He’d set the fire, then waited for the firefighters to show up before shooting them.“It does appear that it was a trap that was set,” said Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering.“People who get up in the middle of the night to fight fires, they don’t expect to get shot and killed.”
Spengler shot himself.
New York already has some of the most stringent gun laws in the nation. Felons, like Spengler, are already barred by law from owning guns according to federal law.

Well, the NRA wants to put a cop in every school building in America, without regard to the cost of doing such a thing. I wonder what their plan is for this one? Put a cop in front of every house in America? That would create something akin to a police state, would it not? On the bright side, it would create jobs.

Where did you see he used an assault rifle. It seems to me he could have done this with about any gun.
Maybe we should also ban hammers or at least register them.

WEBSTER, N.Y.-- Police say the man who lured firefighters in Webster, N.Y., into a deadly ambush had the same make and caliber semiautomatic rifle as the one used in the Connecticut school massacre.

Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said Tuesday that 62-year-old William Spengler was armed with a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle, a .38-caliber revolver and a 12-gauge shotgun in Monday's ambush. Spengler killed two firefighters and wounded two others before fatally shooting himself.

Police have not said which weapon or weapons were used to shoot the firefighters.

Spengler, who set his house on fire to lure the first responders, left a note saying he wanted to burn down the neighborhood and kill as many people as possible. But the note didn't give a motive for the shooting.

He would have to be able to throw that hammer pretty hard.

If we didn't manufacture them and sell them in this country how would he get his hands on one?

In addition, he would have had to use multiple hammers.
Actually, he may have had to had a couple of bandoliers to hold all of the hammers. This would have slowed him down & also have limited his effective firing distance.
I've often wondered why you can register people(ss numbers - home address - drivers licsense)),but not guns?

The hammer remark was from a story about this man that several years ago he had beat his grandmother to death with a hammer and spent about 17 years in prison for it. That is the reason he was banned from having guns. It did not help.
Just sayin if you are going to do it, you can find a way.

Logic is that "Assault Rifles" account for 2% of all gun crime.

Do all laws stop everything? No, do they help., yes. Your car is regulated, you have to have a valid drivers license to drive, most people abide by the driving laws, some don't. Because some don't,do we get rid of all of the laws and restrictions pertaining to owning and operating a motor vehicle? No, that would be stupid. The same should apply to guns.

Are we allowed to drive race cars on the road at 180 mph or drive unsafe vehicles? Are we allowed to pour paint thinner in our water supply, sell bad meat or pharmaceuticals? No, there are laws, these laws are there because of logic and fairness, they were created to prevent negative things from happening to the public.

Do we get rid of laws because they don't stop all criminal activity? No! You people accuse me of lacking logic when you won't even consider using it when it comes to gun laws.

Logic: From December 14th 2012 (including Sandy Hook)- December 25 2012 (yesterday).

957 gun crime deaths
-29 by "Assault Rifle"
-928 by handguns or rifle

That's 3.125%

BAN ASSAULT RIFLES!!!!!!!!!!

logic?
