The debt it still out of control, but to see when and why this started, you might want to click the graph at the right and watch the YouTube debt video. Or get this graph and much more on zFacts' New App (with no ads).
We Are in Danger!... but Not from the Debt

The danger is from the Great Recession that has cost America 10 million jobs. The debt frenzy is making that worse. Take a look (in the graph) at how the debt skyrocketed during World War II. That's how we ended 12 years of Great Depression. This time it's tougher because Reagan and the Bushes ran the debt much higher in good times than it was at the start of WW II. But as Reagan understood, cutting government spending in a recession only makes it worse. Yes, we must pay down the debt, as Clinton was doing, but not while 17 million are out of work.... more

For 8 years, the GOP sat back and watched a Republican Administration turn a yearly budget surplus into a massive deficit. And yet, when that trend starts turning the other direction, the dodo birds come out to complain that the deficit isn't shrinking fast enough. Perhaps if the same urgency were applied when the problem was being created, we wouldn't be in a place where balancing our budget in just one year would mean literally destroying the economy and the country to do it.

1. What will be your liberal excuse for the soon coming "Great Recession?"

2. How much did "Clinton pay down the debt?"

3. "...but not while we have 17,000,000 out of work." 17,000,000? Suprised you'd admit it. What is your timetable for "paying down the debt," or better yet, what will be your liberal excuse or talking points for not "paying the debt" after your 17,000,000 go back to work---if they do, that is?

Tell us how much the deficit "shrunk" under OBAMA.

If we have ANOTHER great depression, which was caused because of republican bungling of the last administration, this NEXT possible recession will also get blamed on republicans for letting sequester go into effect.

Talking to Don is like talking to a child who won't listen. I'm amazed that for all of the years that he's been on this planet, he has so little wisdom to show for it.

Apparently you don't know the difference between "budget deficit" (which this thread is about) and nationals deficit, but since you want to bring yo the national deficit up, put this in your pipe and smoke it. The causes of our humongous deficit is because of the last administration's goof-ups. The drivers of our massive deficit problems is because repubs took a massive SURPLUS and turned it into an even more massive deficit, adding costs of ....here's the drivers....(1) TWO wars (2) 2 tax cuts,(3) Medicare expansion (4) and a Wall Street Bailout ....to the national debt.

It is not President Obama's agenda that is driving the national debt now or into the future---but the Republican policies from the last administration!!

Read the article and study the graphs.

Oh really? Please. There was no actual SURPLUS during Clinton's tenure. It was a "penciled" ideal alone. Don't ask for a link. Do the research on your own.

It's Obama's 2nd term. When will he fix the problems you blame the Republicans for? Obama kept the Bush Tax Cuts in place during his 1st term. Was he wrong or just another politician? Wall Street Bailout? What about Obama's "stimulus" plan? How about the cost of that? Two wars? Obama made a big deal out of pulling us out of Iraq, but he did it within the timeline Bush had already put in place, then took the credit. Bush had his own "Stimulus" plan during his time in office. That was a failure, but not to the tune of what this President has heaped upon us and our children and grand-children. What about this massive failure of healthcare reform? I feel it each week in my paycheck with a large premium increase. We've already been told that the "fine" for non-compliance will be less than the new ObamaCare costs and regulations. How many people do you know that can't afford health care costs now that will be able to afford it when it is mandatory next year?

Give me a break. This President is a massive failure - AND IT IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE REPUBLICANS.

The failure is in your own inability to process rational truthful information. You are accepting falsehoods as truth, to blindly accept the words of others as truth without verifying them is a foolish journey indeed.

BF, your comments show a total lack of understanding the issues. The deficit is totally the root of our death as a superpower and that deficit is 93.81% the responsibility of the republican hero's of the worlds largest ponzi scheme, AKA Reaganomics, voodoo economics, or would you prefer the truth, ENRONOMICS, as practiced by Bush/Chaney to the highest level of deficit ever in the history of the world!

I didn't like it when he caved on the Bush tax cuts, but I understand it was for the best at the time. For one, the Repukians were threatening not to extend unemployment benefits if their upper bracket base didn't get their tax breaks again. If Obama did not do what he did and refused Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest, Rebunkians were all set to let all tax cuts expire, for the poor working class as well as the middle class. Eventually we would have had a double-dip recession if Obama hadn't compromised for these reasons. Once again the Rethugians held America hostage to protect their rich buddies.
Also, If he hadn't compromised, there would be a couple million fewer jobs right now. Obama got a $900 billion stimulus that created and saved 2.2 million jobs and 2 small clean energy tax provisions out of the deal that have created tens of thousands of jobs which will improve economic competitiveness while reducing pollution. The Treasury Grant Program and the Advanced Energy Manufacturing tax credit. These have already created manufacturing jobs in almost every state. You are the one who needs to brush up on your research!

he's no more a failure than any of the last president u all love or the idiot who started this trickle down economic system. the government in whole is a failure, yuo all ranted and raved because President Obama went on a weekend vacation and yet Congress has been out for 2 weeks and not a peep.. this is not obama's country to run but the 3 branches of government working together to make all our lifes alittle better..They have all failed and will continue as long as there is only a two party system

Budget deficit means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Our future unfunded liabilities are around 115 trillion, this is what we should be talking about. Our government's accounting practices are different than any other entity. If Honda decides they are going to build a new plant in three years that will cost them fifty million dollars it goes on the balance sheet as a liability right now, this year. Our government will make a commitment to spend billions of dollars in the future and it does not go on the balance sheet this year. It is a totally screwed up way of accounting.

1. Masterful rebut. A lot of low info voters will believe your talking points.

2. You still didn't tell me how much "Clinton paid down the nationalm debt."
