I like the "Private Threads - Invite Only" option.
I just hope that we can un-invite those we have invited if we choose to.
I have had situations on Topix whereby I had pleasant and civil dealings with people only to have them turn on me later. It would be nice to be able to un-invite a person if need be.
I am assuming whoever started a thread would be able to select that it be private and would be the only person who gets to invite anyone to that thread. I hope that is the case.
The invite only thread is good because it gives the posters a chance to choose who they really want to talk to. But this feature usually kill the rest of the threads and that makes the site look boring and unappealing to the new comers to stay.

EBay requires a a verifiable email account, a verifiable telephone number and a verifiable credit card, home address, etc. And they actually check this information using computers. Still there are eBay members who establish multiple identities. How hard is it to get another Hotmail account for istance, or another credit card? The only sure-fire security would be to require a retinal scan or a fingerp[rint scan. Still, I do believe the eBay approach does limit the number of multiple identies. It simply becomes too cumbersome to create another persona every half hour. From the opposing viewpoint, however, I would be very reluctant to place all that personal information in the hands of any organization, private or public. Organizations, agencies and businesses tend to be rather lax in how they treat confidential data--privacy policies and ethical codes notwithstanding. It's not at all difficult to find discarded or surplussed computer drives from which the confidential data has not been adequately sanitized. Some people buy them for $2, mine the data and sell it. Medical records are often found discarded in dumpsters without being burned or shredded. Web sites get hacked all the time, The personal security risk of giving a business all that private information might be even more serious than publishing your true identity on Topix.
Ebay required those informations but that can be handled by using a third party. I don't pay directly with my credit card.

Business or Topix and similar can both get hacked. I've heard in Politics forums that this site is prone to it that is why there are posters there who never sign up. Giving away the personal informations is dangerous and risky no matter what.

If not, that would be helpful.
You don't need Topix for that, honey. Your tool bar should have it. If not,go to your computer's control panel and click on Internet Option and click Advance. Check the box that says Spell Check. I don't know if your computer has that option. All my computer have it although I am not using it all the time. I am too lazy to click on it except when writing a much serious letter that is non forums related subject.

Private threads could kill the thread and can make the forum boring. I know,I am a poster in other site with this feature. ignoring a poster works for the person who block it,the downside is,that troll can keep on making lies against you and you don't even know it to defend yourself. He/she can turn your friends against you behind your back because you can't see what he was posting since you ignored/blocked him/her.

The Private Message or a Direct Message is handy. It cut down the fighting unless the moderator who can read the posters Private Messages doesn't like the poster just because he is also posting and been an enemy of that poster.

What I noticed about Private/Direct Message, some posters thought they can just ask about my personal informations just because her question or request is private.

I agree with this post and #45. If those features were implemented here on topix this forum would look like a ghost site! I don't think that would go over so well with topix.

That is my understanding too. Everyone can see the blocked posts except you. It would only help the reader filter out the noise and concentrate on meaningful contributions. There are pros and cons to that feature, as you pointed out.

From my point of view, it would make more sense to block individual posts rather than individual posters. What I mean by that is, I would read a post, decide it was off topic or uninteresting and then collapse it to a single line or placeholder that I could later expand if I wanted to see it again. This would have absolutely no effect on what other participants would see. That would be useful IMHO.

It would not be good for Topix. Traffic is what makes them money. The advertisers are paying them through how many viewers they have. But if Topix would not control their trolls that continuesly harass their regulars and their best posters, then they would end up losing them, too.

I think that Topix should remain an open forum, but if they
allowed each registered poster to create one private thread
to where they could invite only those they wanted to talk to,
it would cut down on trolls following people around to attack
people on their private thread.

If a troll or trouble maker wanted to cause trouble, they would
have to do it on one of the open threads, but they would not be
able to bother you on your private thread.

I don't think that unregistered people should be allowed to create
a private thread. Private threads should only be for those of us who are registered.

Another thing that Topix could do would be to allow anyone to read
a private thread, but only those who are invited to that thread could actually post there. Allowing anyone to read private threads would keep people from talking about you behind your back on private threads without you knowing about it, but it would allow friends to post to each other without being bothered by those they don't want posting on their private thread.

Thanks Space1.

I do have a spell checker on my Google tool bar.
All this time I had never noticed that.

In other site where am at,we know who are the moderators and they are also posting with us. Here,I bet even the mods are also posting. The danger about private message or thread,if the moderator is Ronnnie,we already know how sick he is. He would follow us around and snoop our private thread or message. So,it is still not helping no matter how we try to be discreet just to avoid the trolls. Speaking of trolls, there are registered trolls where we at and there is nothing Topix can do about it. We reported them many times but it doesn't work.

You are welcome. If your computer is slow, check your control panel and click on Add and Remove Program. Remove any google tool bar,ask tool,Advance Registry Optimizer,Pando, and any other security suite that complicates your current anti-virus,anti-spyware,firewa ll. The google tool bar has its own security protection that cause conflict with your current security suite. Doing this would help your internet speed up than what it used to be. If you are not sure what's in your control panel add/remove program, browse it in internet and find out what it is before to remove it. Don't remove the internet update from your Add/Remove program. It's good for your computer.

The first step that Topix need to do is to get rid of the trolls not to ban the ones who retaliated with the trolls. It is too backwards.

Hi Guys-

It's really good to see you guys talking about what could make Topix a better site to visit! Your feedback is so helpful to give us insight as to what you'd like to see happening on Topix.

I really like your feedback about private chats. Any features we add from this point on will indeed only be for registered users, so you guys are all set! Also, it's safe to assume that a user isn't a moderator unless they have a blue profile. So if we decide to add "private threads/chat" you guys wouldn't have to worry about any troll moderators popping in.

PLEASE keep the feedback coming! It is more helpful than you know!

Thanks,

Top Mod 7,at the other site where am at outside Topix, the names of the moderators are exposed to everyone. Is there anyway that Topix can do the same? The moderators where am at are also posting with us. That's good to know if we are chatting with the mods or not.

The reason I wish Topix can have this informations for us is because there is a poster in other forums here in Topix that said he have a Topix moderator friends who also posted there who told him what's going on also he said that he knows who are reporing anyone, etc. To me,only Topix staffs can access any informations like that. But he said he is not a mod. So,it is really nice if the Topix posters would put the names of their moderators so we are aware who they are.

Hi Space1-

Thanks for the feedback, I'll pass your ideas along. While we don't post a list of our moderators, there are a few things that are safe to assume:

1. ONLY people with blue profiles are moderators. There is no way for anyone to fabricate the blue profile... anyone with a blue moderator profile is a paid Topix employee

2. Anyone that says they are "talking" with a Topix employee or has a "friend" that works at Topix is most likely telling you a white lie. We have a strict privacy policy at Topix and do not discuss Topix business with anyone outside the company. Basically it's safe to assume they are making things up.

Thanks guys,

I would like to inquire why some folks are allowed to stalk, harrass and use personal names to insult others. Yes, I have used the feed back to report abuse, yet the guy seems immune.
Yes, I may seem like I'm crying but really just looking for a fair shake. I called the man a dog after reporting him for stalking and my post were removed, he posted that I was bankrupting use my name and the post still stays.
I sited your own terms of service, which he has been broken several times. Just wondering if there is a way to contact topix besides the feed back site, that seems to be broken.
Sorry if this is not the place for it, just taking an chance that you might have an answer for me.

Is it possible for the modeator to sign up as a regular poster so his or her avatar's color would be the same as ours?

I experienced the same. I am getting stalked, harassed, and provoked by the trolls but they are still there no matter how I reported them and a lot of them are even registered.

The poster I was talking about who said he is not a moderator can delete the posts/threads that easy. The reason I said he can is because each time I posted the proof of his lies and attack to prove that he was stalking and harassing me and others, the posts or the threads will be gone in a very short period of time. My threads also got deleted as soon as he said he will delete it. Then he said he would report me by saying I am making up stories and for violating the Topix terms of which he and a lot of posters are guilty of.
