Can anyone share anything about the October 1979 murder of the Rinks store manager in Bellefontaine? It has peaked my interest. Thanks.

George Skatez was arrested for the crime and he was one of the leaders in the Lucasville prison riot and is on death row

Yes, but did he really do it? I've looked at some of the filings on the Lucasville riots in regards to his involvement, and I am having doubts he did either crime. And with all of the corruption and unsolved murders, etc in Bellefontaine, I am wondering if he was railroaded????

Well, do you know him? Did he grow up in Bellefontaine? Did you attend his trial? Who was the prosecutor in the case? What are you basing your, "Yes he did it" on? Thanks.

Everyone in prison is innocent. Have'nt you ever see any prison movies? The fact is a man was murdered. A suspect was tried and convicted by a jury in a court of law. There obviously must have been enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. If not, then there is an appeals process.

Have you ever heard of the Innocence Project? People who are in prison for a crime they didn't do are helped and set free thru the organization. I heard a man speak just a couple weeks ago that was freed thru their help. He was in prison 25 years for a crime he didn't do.

I can't say whether or not he did it, but as for Rogers, I seem to remember that Skatzes said Rogers actually commited the murder, but they offered Rogers a plea deal if he implicated Skatzes. Skatzes never denied being involved in the robbery, only that it was the other guy who commited the murder. As far as I'm concerned, aren't they both just as guilty as the other, regardless of who killed him? They both were there, neither is an innocent victim, and whoever commited the murder wasn't hindered by the other from doing it, so they're both responsible.

My questions to Madeline would be: why are you interested? Is Skatzes a relative of yours? Are you looking at trying to free him? Why, after all of these years are you interested in a man who has proven himself a criminal even after his conviction. He was there. Period. He participated in the murder of a man. Do you think he is going to come right out and admit to it?
By-the-way, the man had a name that was murdered, Arthur Lee Smith. He was not just the Rink's manager, he was a father, an uncle, and a husband. If you do not mind, can you show some respect for a murdered man and refer to him by his name, rather than 'the Rink's manager'?

Well, who the heck are you? A relative of the murdered man? I don't feel in any way that I was disrespectful to him just because I didn't use his name. Maybe I didn't know it. Did you ever think of that? How come you're on such a high horse? You shouldn't "ass"sume so many things just because I show an interest in this story. Since you claim to know so much about his "guilt" why don't you tell us what you know.

Weren't YOU the one who wrote, "Yes, but did he really do it? I've looked at some of the filings on the Lucasville riots in regards to his involvement, and I am having doubts he did either crime. And with all of the corruption and unsolved murders, etc in Bellefontaine, I am wondering if he was railroaded????"
-- And looking at your other comments it is obvious that you are interested in George Skatze, not the murder itself. And that being the case, why don't you just go visit the man in prison, I am sure you will hear what it is you want to hear.

I haven't even stated an opinion Madeline. I have stated some facts, however.
You started this forum in Logan County, Ohio asking a question, then making a statement suggesting this man was innocent and possibly railroaded.
Have you not considered the statements that you made may fall on the ears of family and friends of the deceased? I was only 10 years old when this happened, yet I can see the hurt in my mother's eyes as if it had just happened today.

Your statements and questions portray your fascination with the man - not the case itself.
