Concern about toxic algae has spread to yet another Ohio waterway this summer, this time prompting officials to close a lake at a Logan County summer camp.

The YMCA of Central Ohio closed the 60-acre Silver Lake at Camp Willson near Bellefontaine after workers noticed a bloom of cyanobacteria, more commonly called blue-green algae, in the water on July 14.

Two water samples taken at the lake contained microcystin, a liver toxin caused by the algae, said John Bickley, the YMCA's president and CEO. One sample showed the toxin at a level 50 times higher than a World Health Organization safety standard for swimmers.

Bickley said 19 campers developed rashes, but no one is sure whether the lake water was to blame.

"This caught us way off guard," he said.

Heavy rainfall and high temperatures this summer have combined to create big problems with toxic algae across the state.

EPA spokeswoman Heather Lauer said the agency has received about a half-dozen calls this summer from people reporting green water or potential algae blooms at other privately owned lakes.

"We've suggested that people draw their own samples or have a private contractor draw the samples for them," she said.

Is anyone aware of any private lakes/ponds in the area with algae?

Aren't blue-green algae stimulated by the accumulation of phosphates from laundry detergents released into the lakes and streams? We had that situation cleaned up once. Are people getting careless again?

Eutrophication is a type of pollution caused by excessive nutrients (phosphates from detergents, runoff of fertilizers from farm fields, poorly treated human and industrial wastes) that makes lakes and rivers overly productive of blue-green algae and other simple plants. The result is an algal "bloom" that kills fish, clams and other aquatic life, leads to smelly brownish and greenish water and gradually turns whole lakes into bogs. It makes the lakes and streams unpleasant and unhealthy for recreation, causes health problems and increases the difficulty in producing clean drinking water. In recent years vast tracts of land that were formerly in soil banks or in crop rotation programs are being diverted to corn production for ethanol for highway use. This is just another dire consequence of the government's obsession with ethanol as an "alternative" fuel. It's a major problem on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The result in the Gulf of Mexico rivals the environmental seriousness of the current oil spill. If Congress would cut off the subsidies (your and my tax dollars) for alcohol production, farmers would go back to more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Tell your Congressmen and Senators how you feel about having E10 and E15 rammed down your throat and spoiling the environment.

Here's what WPKO's website listed today:

After two weeks of testing, Camp Willsonís Silver Lake (pictured) is back in use.

The Ohio Department of Health declared the lake safe Thursday after the second and third tests came back negative.

The YMCA of Central Ohio closed the lake after workers noticed blue-green algae in the water on July 14th.

Two samples taken from the lake contained a liver toxin caused by the algae. One sample showed the toxin at a level 50 times higher than the World Health Organization standard for swimmers.

Heavy rainfall and high temperatures this summer have helped fuel the toxic algae in rivers and lakes across the state.

The algae also caused the closing of Grand Lake St. Marys earlier this summer.

50x above normal and now negative?
