Chris Schmidt. He's been an assistant for 8 or 9 years. He graduated from BHS, played football 4 years there and at Wittenberg, where he coached for several years after graduating. Both he and his wife teach in the Bellefontaine Schools. He is of excellent character and would be a great role model for the kids as well as a fantastic coach. He's paid his dues; he's highly qualified, and he deserves the job.

why does it seem we refuse to look outside of bellefontaine for a coach? i know this would require a coach to have a teaching job but im sure we have a few more cush jobs we could give them.. sometimes i think that someone who is not "bellefontaineized" would do a better job...

Teachers always have first choice for the job. Really don't matter if they are even qualified.

Just say "no" to Schmidt. I hope it's someone outside of the good ole boys club so we can clean up the sideline and remove the drinking buddies, wanta bes, the former coaches and ADs and bring some respect back to the program.

LOL. Schmidt was more of a baseball guy in HS as I recall.

His brother was the baseball guy.

Heard that job has not been posted internally yet so this might take a bit. I have heard a lot of rumors about possible names outside the district that are interested. I doubt that Coach Clark would come back since he left the staff a couple years back to spend more time with his family. Rumor has it that Rick Reed and Art Caudill have been asked by some of the players to put their names in for the HC job but both men have declined to do so in order to concentrate on other personal and professional goals. Chris Schmidt seems like the only internal person interested so this might be a done deal before it gets started because the district might deem Chris "qualified" and hire him. This for sure would be the easiest hire for the administration that would require the less time and less coaching/teaching moves. Former Mechanicsburg coach Neal Kasner just resigned from Harrison in Cincy so I wonder if he might try to apply to get back in the area? I also heard that Dick Leabeau has been contacted and is currently talking to Marvin Lewis to see what Marvin thinks he should do even though Dick is not a teacher in the district. It could get interesting!

Jason Brown was hired when a teacher or two had applied for the job after Peits retired.

I hope we can get a guy between 35-40 years oold, has college contacts and has been to the playoffs.

Chieftain fans deserve better than hiring a rookie hhead coach.

IMO,
You think Chris Schmidt does not know football since he both played it and coached it at one of the most successful football programs in the nation at the DIII level? Hmmmmm. "Drinking buddies" or not, the man knows something about the game as do assistants Biff Roberts and Wayne Stevenson. I don't know about the others but you can't say that these three men are "wantabes." Maybe some of you that love to sit in the stands and coach, or those that like to coach em up on your entertainment systems ought to apply since you all seem to know how to take the program to a whole new level. Do you even have a clue what goes into building and maintaining a competitive football program or have you simply taken what you have had at BHS for granted? I am not only talking to you IMO but also those that always want to point the fingers at what's wrong. When you point your finger, you have four pointing back at you and it is you who are the problem.

Not sure why anyone thinks Schmidt is the guy. He's never even been a coordinator.

Why isn't Schmidt the guy? Is loyalty to a program totally worthless? Why just go out and hire someone from outside? It doesn't appear that this has worked very well for some of our area schools and universities. Our school system will lose a quality coach, teacher, and media specialist if Schmidt has to go somewhere else to be appreciated.

Who Wee Wow,
No, I am not Chris' dad, but I just don't see how people can say that he is not qualified. I too am interested in the hire that our school system makes because I will be having sons come up through the system in the next couple of years and I want to know that we have hired an excellent head coach/teacher that will allow my boys to be a part of the great tradition of Chieftain football.
Cheers 4 Bellefontaine!

Schmidt might be one heck of a guy but he has still never been a coordinator. So I've got to question his ability to run the entire program, to coach the coaches and be the type of leader a HFC needs to be.
To me it speaks volumes that Brown didn't give him the OC job this year.
He was also passed over for the Graham job so it would seem to me that there has to be some questions about him.
And I'll also add, if coach Schmidt would leave just because he didn't get the HC position? That doesn't speak very highly of his character and commitment to BHS.

Straighttalk, how long would you remain with a school system that by-passed you twice and didn't appreciate the jobs that you have done for it? How long would you remain committed? Other school systems pay far higher wages and could and will provide the coaching position that Schmidt desires. As far as Brown's not giving Schmidt the OC job this year, why don't you ask Brown how he feels about that now?
It seems ridiculous that you are so eager to go outside and buy a "pig in a poke" rather than go with someone who is already in place and proven.

I just don't see how he is already proven. Has he ever lead a group of coaches as a coordinator? Has he ever developed a game plan, then overseen the implementation in the week of practice? And dealt with fellow coaches if they weren't carrying it out like he wanted?
I don't know, he may be the right guy for the job but to just annoint him simply because he works at the school, is from Bellefontaine and has coached there for 8 years, I just can't make that leap. The man has coached for 8 years and has never been a coordinator...why is that?
I'm not necessarily saying going outside is the right move, but I think it's in everyone's best interest to at least put all the choices side by side and make an educated, inteligent decision.
As far as staying around...point taken. That's something he would have to answer for himself. I think an ideal situation if he doesn't get it would be to stay if and only if he can coordinate and get that missing experience under his belt.
And LOL at how Brown would feel about that now. Hind sight 20/20.

What ever happened to the OC that JB chose? I heard he came in hot and all intense and then I did not see him nor hear about him anymore for the rest of the season. If he was such a guru, then why in the world did our offense struggle so much in the later part of the season and require our defense to pratically live on the field? Wasn't the new OC's name PJ Cumber or something like that?
