Just saw the movie 2012, it was pretty wild. Has anyone else watched it? What did you think? I have been watching shows on Discovery about this topic and while some bad things could happen around this time, like some serious CME action from the sun, it shouldn't be quite as dramatic as the movie. They said the biggest problem we could face that is most likely to happen would be satelite failure and the complete collapse of the electric grids due to the increase solar activity. They said it could take up to 10 years to totally restore electricity to the planet. Yellowstone is a concern, it is due to erupt sometime within the next 2000 years but no guarentee it will happen in 2012.

Thank you Mama Bear, I've been wanting to see this movie and your info was very nice. I've been reading up on this topic around 10 yrs or so. A friend suggested a book called One second After, about what our lives would be like if satelites were taken out, I highly recomend this book for a good winter read. I think much of the time we as humans are so busy running the rat race we fail to see the other possibilities in life of the What If's.. I'll go see this movie now after your post, again thank you

What I've taken away from watching History channel and the like is that the North Pole could tilt and the Earth will tilt off it's axis. Then there could be major earthquakes all over. I look at it this way, if it's the end of us, there is nothing we can do about it. But I think I will wake up Dec 22 2012 and be just fine. Remember when 1984 and y2K were going to be the end?

The loss of artificial satellites would indeed wreak havoc with telecommunications and global positioning since we have become so dependant on satellites as a medium of communication and measurement. However, we did well without them once, and I suspect we would rise to the occasion again. Does anyone have any old vacuum tube-based ham gear in the attic? You might find yourself much in demand. Antiques may save the day.

I think it was the Y2K rollover on Jan. 01, 2000 and the daylight saving time screwup when Congress suddenly changed the time change schedule with such short notice in 2007. Neither disaster really materialized.

2012 is very real along with many other would be disasters(terrorism, global warming, nuclear war)the difference being they are "digging" up new evidence pretty much everyday to support their claim and we also need to take into consideration the nastradaumas factor along with other seers and the infamous mayan calender,we as humans would be naive to believe we could survive w/o satelites,of course we can physically but w/ all the chaos that comes w/ the loss of our precious technology we will probably wipe ourselves out through competition and mistrust with all the threats in the universe mankind is its own worst enemy and to prove that theory just turn your tv to any news channel so even if 12/21/2012 comes and goes we will eventually meet our demise and it could come from a number of the things so in conclusion i can go either way on how its going to turn out and ill admit a lot of the evidence is very intriguing but only time is going to tell

In the book I read as mentioned above, one fact I found very interesting yet something we don't reall think about is,
Onces those satelites go out, everyone w/ a pacemaker, insulin pump, medications as we know it would cease. No gas station pumps, no vehicle prior to 1978? nothing would function. The man I believe who wrote this book is a Prof of Military History in Virginia, sorry I cant recall exact facts, but I will say this was the most eye opening book I've read in a long time, even if it was fiction, many of the information was accurate. I went on to ask several friends in the military and they agreed that yes it could indeed happen all it takes is one missle, one person not paying attention on the job.

2012 is not mentioned in the Holy scriptures and the Mayan Indians sacrificed their children to demonic spirits, scriptures strictly forbid this practice; that being said I don't believe these prophecies should be considered trustworthy.

bishop,i agree w/ you at the same time its hard to disregard scientific facts,im a person of faith as well but the Bible doesnt mention dinosaurs either.please dont mistake that for sarcasm but there is a lot of unanswered questions. i hate to buy into the hype but its hard not too especially w/ all the "coincidences"in the quatrains of nostradaumas, irregardless of how the mayans practiced religion the calender seems legit and as far as the dinosaurs we have fossils and carbon dating it may just boil down to how strong your faith is

Most of archaeology and paleontology is pretty sound science. There may be professional squabbles over dates and exact time lines, but most of the educated world accepts the findings of the Earth's geological evolution over the past 4 to 5 billion years, the development of simple life forms during very recent portion of that time frame, the later rise of dinosaurs, mammals and other complex animals and finally the appearance of man within the past two million years or so. These evolutionary concepts do not really contradict the Bible and the scriptures of other faiths if you keep in mind those documents were written in a highly simplified, figurative sense appropriate to the languages and uneducated peoples of the day. They didn't know about millions and billions of years, so they said, On the first day God created such and such, on the second day such and such, etc. The peoples of those distant times were unprepared to talk in scientific terms that would be appropriate and expected today. Don't expect terms like millions, billions, parsecs, light years, etc.

Most of the talk centering on the year 2012 is speculative. It's trying to extrapolate the future from relatively imprecise, often murky documents of the ancient past. To try to predict the events of 2012 and 2013 from the writings of Nostradamus or the ending of the Maya calendar is fun, but it is more "science fantasy" than it is scientific forecasting. I would strongly suggest people read the NPR program that deals with this very topic, broadcast yesterday ( http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php... ), to see what NASA says about these speculative fantasies. There is not a lot to support them. Just enjoy the movies and books, and let it be. Terror-stricken folks are writing NASA to see if they should kill their children and then themselves to avoid the horror of the world's ending, or to learn when they should euthanize their pet to spare it the final ordeal. That may sound funny to you, but it is sad to hear of people living in such despair over events that are shear speculation.

It is part of the prophecy that there will be a new earth.
From the Christian prophecies it is at the exact moment that Christ returns, the world is transformed into a new earth. Many of the world's religions say this.

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Sagittarius

Once again, the domestic atmosphere isn't exactly peaceful. Someone is still all worked up, and you may have come out in sympathy by now. Try to discuss things with as much objectivity as you can muster, otherwise, with Mars now retro, the conversation will soon disintegrate into a bad-tempered spat or a slanging match in which you try to catch one another out. It's important to clear the air.
