I attended the school in '87 in Clearwater FL.
I just recently got a CDL license to drive Busses. When I got the CDL I was told that the "Chaufeurs Licence" that I got from United Truck Masters would not count. Does this mean that I would not be able to drive a Semi even after spending all the money on that shool??
Does anyone know??
Thanks for your help

Well, here I am again, and now they threatened to garnish my wages, 15%, since I now work for the Florida Department of Health, as a Nurse. So, since I did NOT want a garnishment on my record, I have begun to pay!!!! To say that this is not fair is an understatement....but unless we can get together and file a class action law suit, and get an attorney to take this case on "contingency", I don't think most of us have the funds to pay for an attorney up front to fight this for us. Any ideas? I did see an attorney, one time,$100 for 1 hour, and she said part of the problem is that the school was supposed to notify the Dept of Ed that they closed/filed bankruptcy at the time they closed. Since they don't have an "official" record of the actual date they closed and the names of the students who were
enrolled at the time, that the burden of proof is on us. I remember very clearly the the Financial Aid man, Fred Gerlinsky, was there the day I showed up for computer training and the building was closed, that he stated that the only "Good" thing was that none of us would be required to repay our student loans, since the school had closed. So what part of that statement would tell anyone that we would in fact end up owing the student loan ?? What really upsets me is the exhorbitant penalty fees and interest....I would gladly pay the full amount of the money I actually borrowed, but to penalize us for someone else's mistake...that is just not fair. I am now only 5 years from retirement and having to pay almost $300 per month on this Bogus student loan !!

United Truck Masters was a ripp off. My hubby went and finished in 1987, how convient they went out of business leaving their students in debt. shame on them..we finally paid the loan off this year...woohoo..am glad about that..I have searched and searched, no luck..hope some find their address and phone number. Would be nice to add them to resume, even though they aren't in business...

maybe if we all got together on yahoo we can afford to pay an attorney to check it out for us or legal aid is the best bet too

I attended this school also in 1988 in Clearwater. I am now trying to get professional credit for my bachelor's degree and I was told to call the Florida Department of Education to get my transcripts because the school had to be listed with the State before they could even open the doors.

You know I remember one of my roommates in Clearwater was related to the owner and we went to his house. I have everyone's names somewhere at home. I'll go through everything and see what I can find.

I attended United Travel School in 1987, I too was told that the school was to close and that the student loan payment was to be condoned by the government, now 20 years later I get a call from Allied Interstate Inc. saying that if I do not get into a rehabilitation program they'll garnish my salary, at the same time they called the company I work for to start the garnishment. When the HR person told me, I called Allied, they faxed me a comprommise letter to pay 14k for a 5k loan to start payments in 5 days, Is this legal?

I enrolled at this school in September 1987, completed the "Home Study" portion in one month, by mid October 1987, and then was told that I had to wait until there was an opening in the computer portion (SystemOne), before I could attend this part and graduate. I was told that the soonest opening would be in March 1988. I called in mid February, 1988, and was given a date to begin the Computer training, in early March and when I arrived for the first day of class, the doors were locked and a sign posted on the door announcing that the school was closed. I was told by their main office (out of state, I think it was Texas, but I am not sure) that since they had closed that location and the nearest Travel school was more than 50 miles away, that I would not be required to repay my student loans (less than $3000 at the time). When I filed my income tax for 1991, they kept my refund of almost $900, stating I owed for my delinquent Student loan, I then completed a form that IRS sent me, stating I DID NOT owe the loan, due to the school closing before I could graduate. End of discussion, until 1994 when I had a (very small) settlement coming and this loan showed up as an outstanding debt. My attorney for the injury claim investigated and then I received (and still have a copy of) a letter from the United States Attorney in Tampa, Fl, stating that the school closed in 1988, filed bankruptcy in 1990, and therefore I DO NOT oew this money. Ok for the next 12 years until last October when I get a nasty letter from Dept of Ed, demanding the repayment of this loan, AGAIN !! They now have decided to garnish my wages, and the debt is almost $12,000, with interest and penalties. But since I am now a State employee, they can "get me" Any suggestions out there?
I think we need to get a lawyer and file a Class Action Law Suit..........
Hello, I am having the same trouble with the Dept. of Ed. They are saying that I owe 11,000 from when I too went to United Travel in Clearwater in 1988. The school went out of business and was supposed to have a life time job placement and they taught us on old systems that not even one airline used. I never got a penny change from these so called loans that I took out. I want to start a class action lawsuit. Let's get started

Pat, Sorry about posting at the bottom of your note, but I could not get this thing to work right. If anybody out there is interested then let's get started on this lawsuit. I have been turned down by fafsa for help in taking college classes because of this school. I have been looking for years for someone else with the same issues that I have. I spoke to the Dept of Ed yesterday and they asked me to give them $8200 in the next 90 days and then I would qualify for $1500. I don't think so!!!!! I haven't been able to find a job in that field and that training was 20 years ago. They drug us in under false pretence and we have never been able to benefit from that school. The government is nasty and will take anything you have, even your social security checks. They took my stimulis check because of this school. Love to hear from anyone. Mad as hell!!
