The town hall meeting has horrible tonight. The council decided 4-1 (1 being Kathy Yates) to appoint Kim Holmes as the new mayor. I've lived in Belle for my entire life and know nothing about the woman. Hell, she may make a great mayor. However, that is up to the people to decide. There should be an election. The fact that there is 3 1/2 years left in the term speaks for itself. You don't appoint someone to a term for 3 1/2 years. One or two years I can understand, but 3 1/2? That's almost an entire term. If Belle wants Kim Holmes to be mayor then she should be elected by the people. Was the council afraid she wouldn't win? In other news, Surbaugh needs to go. I hope he does step down in July as he stated he would. Bevil seems like he doesn't want to ruffle any feathers. Buck didn't say much or stand up for anything. Asbury just agrees with Surbaugh so hopefully she will do something once he leaves. Kim seems to be a good recorder but just because she has covered the mayor's spot since his death doesn't mean anything to me. I can be a circus clown or dress up as the opposite sex and convince everyone of anything for a month. Finally, Kathy Yates. She's the only one that speaks for the people. Kathy is the only one to go against the council and stand up for what's right.

In closing, it's time for a change. A change that can only be made by the citizens. We need fresh ideas not stubbern old folks. Please begin attending the meetings and let's start making some positive moves to make this town great again.

I'm glad you posted this.... I didn't even know they were having a meeting in which they were going to appoint a new mayor. So much for getting input from the citizens on what they would like see happen and u r right, there should be an election. The 80 year old council members need to go! This is 2011 and not 1940 anymore, the town needs to get up to speed with the times!! Kim may very well do a good job, however the citizens of Belle deserve a voice!

Yea I agree with you both. Not that I don't think Kim might not do a good job I just think the citizens should have got to vote on this issue. I think council had their mind made up even before tonights meeting. After watching the news I appreciate Dave Fletchers effort in getting the petition. If I would have known about it I would have signed it as well. I am not saying that I would vote for him but I would have liked to at least had the option at looking at candidates to see who I thought was the best one.

Once again the wishes of the people of Belle are not heard. Only about 300-400 of the registered voters in Belle vote anyway, and with a petition of over 200, that is the majority of "voters" who felt there should have been an election.

Surbaugh has no right to tell someone they cannot speak at a public meeting. These "councilpersons" need to learn about Roberts Rules of Order. Only the mayor can do that.

Buck has refused to work on different comitties since his time there, he is more interested in being seen doing things in Charleston.
And Buck's niece was hired as Clerk. No ads run, just bring someone in from Florida, who by the way had Florida tags on her vehicle for over 9 months while getting paid by the Town of Belle.

Kay is a nice person, but again is an "appointed" person.

Bevil is a joke, as he was when he was a police man. Talks out of both sides of his mouth.

Kathy Yates did a good job as recorder, and is always mindful of the people she represents. She is to be admired for refusing to vote for an appointment.

Kim is out for Kim--remember the Don Blankenship support of her for House of Delegates "for the sake of the kids" yet the kids of Belle are denied the use of the gym and library.

And regarding Cox, most people don't like him because he does his job. Speeding tickets, busts for stolen property, and drug busts. All others just looked the other way, sometimes because "family" was involved.

Belle used to be a nice clean community. Now with the absentee landlords, or in fact some of the council people are landlords, property is trashy,
weeds and grass high. No incoming business, streets with potholes, and holes left from utilities digging them up.

Also, most of these people currently on council have no law knowledge, much less a college degree, and they are going to make law? This is certainly not the great little town of Belle it was in the last 20 or 30 years.
Now lets see what happens--rates will be increased, crime will increase, and the town will start to look like Ethiopia. When you have an issue whether night or day -CALL THE MAYOR--CALL YOUR COUNCILPERSON--they only work 15 minutes a
month anyway--SO when the dogs bark all night, call them, when you see crime happening--call them--when your basement floods--call them-when your kids can't play in the gym--call them. Make them earn their "appointed" money. Or better yet, since this is so "fake" lets pay them with Monopoly money.

Speaking of council, Kay Asbury shouldn't even be there because when Mr brown won and then had to decline the position, Angie kincaid was the next highest vote so it should've went to her.
Angie would have made them accountable for their actions so the good ole boy system appointed Kay. Ithink Kay is agood person but it was how things went about that outrages me and this is not a personal attack on kay.

Who died and left Ronnie Surbaugh in charge? If what the Gazette says is true, then Ronnie has lost any respect that I had for him.

Does he even live within the city limits? Just because you have a Belle address doesn't mean you live in the city limits.

I don't know Kim Holmes personally, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to run a small town like Belle, and I figure she will be as good a mayor as any one else. But, the decision should have been left up to the voters.

Belle has gone to hell!!

I just read the article in the Gazette this AM and could not believe what I read!! The council as a whole needs wiped out and we need to start over. What a bunch of clowns! Sounds like Kim fed them with a bunch of crap before the meeting by telling them "Larry had been grooming her for the position" their mind was set before the meeting.

Furthermore, would someone please tell me when Ronnie became king because I think I must have missed it??!! To deny someone the right to speak at a public meeting then tell them they will have the escorted out when they
do... Wow! Is all I have to say! They must have felt threatened by the citizens of Belle. I wish I would have known about Fletcher's petition. I would have def signed it and been right there with him at the meeting!

IT WAS POSTED AT THE TOWN HALL SINCE LAST THURSDAY THAT AT COUNCIL MEETING THE MAYOR SITUATION WOULD BE ON THE AGENDA. MEETING is every 3rd Tuesday at 7pm.

For the most part, I agree with Piggly Wiggly. Regardless, the American way is an election by the people. Come on, if Ms. Holmes was finishing out the remainder of the term and it was only a year or less, I would be for it. But 3 years! That's not reasonable and the town council can't honestly expect citizens to roll over and be o.k. with this. If I understood correctly, it was done in closed door session. This is not a dictatorship and they (the council) are supposed to represent the citizens of Belle. I'm not saying I'd vote for Fletcher, but I would sign the petition calling for an election. I will also be contacting the County Commission to see what recourse we as citizens have.

Here we go again. Piggly Wiggly, Wee,wee,wee.... all the way home. Why don't you run for office and put your mouth where it counts instead of hiding behind your wiggly tail. You know squat about some of the things you're talking about.

It would cost about $2800. It would be worth it to satisfy the people and get the right person on office.

We need some new blood in this town. We need some folks that are passionate about the future of this town. Improvments need to be made and I'm not talking about improving the cop's vehicle every 2-3 years. We need a Grand Cherokee like we need a hole in the head. I didn't get a chance to sign the petition but would have. Fletcher may not be the people's choice but if the people had a choice, that would be nice.

The comment was made by Surbaugh that 'the people elected the council and the council will do what's right and move to appoint Kim Holmes as the new mayor' isn't true for all of Belles citizens. I only voted for 2 people in the last election; one was Kathy Yates and the other is deceased.

I forgot to mention the issue with the Recorder situation. Did anyone hear about interviews being conducted for that opening? No? Me either. The word is that Kim has already been interviewing people for that position. Maybe the objective is to hurry and fill it with someone you know and trust before anyone else has a chance to apply.

Don't worry they have already made their mind up there. They will appoint the lady that got the job in the office that is related to buck. Watch and see...
