When my cousins came to visit us, my mother would make them stay outside the house until she had used a fine tooth comb to get rid of the lice. Very time consuming, considering I had 5 cousins that would come at the same time. She would also make them strip down to there underware, and put all the clothes in the wash. My father watched this and suggested the next time they came to stay to use about a tablespoon of kerosene on their heads. He said thats what his mother did on him and his siblings. She tried it and guess what it worked. You leave the Kerosene on for about 5 minutes, then use s good quality shampoo to wash their heads about two times. It really works.
Are you going to argue with a 102 year old great grandmother. I used this remedy on four children, and it worked every time. But you are correct in saying the the home must be cleaned, Also you have to get the school to do the same. Just my two cents. |

As parents it's our responsibility to take care of our children no matter what! If my kids have lice, it's my job to get rid of them. If I don't and it spreads and others catch it, thats not right. No matter if you like it or not you have to take care of your kids. No matter how much trouble it may cause. If you afford it or you dont want to be bothered, hten don't have them. Thas why there are alot of sick kids in school. Parents say well, I have to work so they send their kids sick to school to spread the germs. I understand you dont want to miss work, but would you like it if someone kept bringing theirs in sick and giving it to your kids all the time.
my kids school had a lice issues and the teacher said to wash our kids hair in FLEA DOG SHAMPOO. They never did get it. So once a month I wash their hair with it, for just incase. |

Kerosene and Dog Flea shampoo are hazardous to humans. Don't get me wrong I dealt with it when my kids were in school and used these remedies myself.I think back now and can't imagine putting my kids (and now grandkids) through the dangers of these chemicals. Combing and shampoos with residual effects work best. Tea Tree Oil is supposed to be safe and effective. A teaspoon in a bottle of regular shampoo provides a residual effect. You can also purchase shampoo from Melaeluca (sp?). Look through the Jacksonville.com archives and there is a website where a nurse developed a shampoo that is 100% guaranteed, safe, and has a residual effect. It is $20 a bottle but that is a small price to pay for relief. She also recommends not using toxic sprays but to vacuum a couple times a day furniture, carpet, and hardwood floors and to bag up items that can't be washed AND Dryed (for at least 20 minutes on high) for a minimum of 2 weeks. Good luck and I'm sure more than what is being told in this article will come out as to why this woman was arrested.

The mother had a month to get rid of the lice. That's plenty of time no matter what the situation.
The health dept. would provide the meds for free. No, they don't work like they are supposed to, but I was advised by my pediatrician to use both RID and NIX back-to-back and leave them on twice as long as the directions said. It worked perfectly. Also there is prescription medicine called Ovide that works. Or, like someone else said, you can pick it all out by hand. It takes ALOT of time and effort, but it can be done. I've done it several times, unfortunately. If she had done her "very best" then her kids wouldn't be infested still after a month and she wouldn't have refused to come pick them up from school. It sucks being the parent that keeps catching then because others are too lazy to take the time to get rid of bugs. |

I kept my kids home with highly contageous infections and was jailed for it and police said when the kids were homeschooled they were absent 89 times! So, send your kids to school with the plague or do time like I did1 Go Girl! It's not easy or cheap to rid yourself of lice so what's a Mom to do? If she keeps them home she goes to jail and loosed them altogether? You cops need to find a criminal to contend with and leave us mothers to do our jobs. I hope you go to jail soon so you shut those ignorant mouths up.

the sure fire way and easy way to get rid of lice is first wash hair, use rid or nix, hot blow dry hair, the bugs can't stand the heat (oh btw...do this OUTSIDE OF THE HOUSE)when hair is dry here is the secret. Soak hair with baby oil and let it set for a short while, it penetrates the eggs glue, then use a large brush and hot blow dryer to blow hair, using smaller and smaller combs as the hair drys you can see the eggs and pick them easier because the hair is oily and they will slide right off. Sorry to say that i have been there done that, it happens to the best of us. No kerosene, no mayo, no lighter fluid. After nit picking, wash everything and BAG UP THE STUFFED ANIMALS. Stuffed animals are the worst. Yeh, I am a dad with 2 girls, i was fortunate to have never gotten them "knocking on head". Remember baby oil and blow dryer. God Bless.

i understand the women saying she almost had a breakdown.i know it sounds a bit dramatic but 4 years ago i had a run of almost 6 months of headlice in my youngest.
not only was i worried about the school i had her in daycare. i had too take her from the provider because she refused too belive her house had anything too do with it. her theory was her kids had blond hair....at one point i attended the spring concert at the school and watched her 2 kids scratch their heads for 30 minutes straight during the choir.others even noticed. i went the next day and told her i am not saying my daughter got it from her place,my daughter could have brought it too her home but ignoring it wont help. its funny no one has mentioned tea tree oil because this was touted as the thing that would prevent it and clear it up. as for the malt vingar i used it but instead of water i used oil.i covered her head, wrapped a plastic bag then a towel and she slept over night.the oil smothered them and the vinegar loosens the grip on the shaft of the hair. i did this everynight for 7 days on the premise the life span is 7-10 days and i would kill anything that i may have missed. i used a steel comb and would sit her down on a plastic sheet and we all took turns combing her hair out. i dont care what anyone says, the race, cleanliness or care anyone takes wont matter if the lice makes contact the kid will get it. |

Why is it when a remedy that works, and has worked for years all of a sudon is dangerious. Kerosene used to be used internally for stomach problems. That's an backwoods remedy, that does work. I don't recommend it today, as you might be charged with child abuse. Kerosene, years ago was called coal oil. I guess since they changed the name it has become dangerous. You don't fill your tub up, and put your child into it. Like I stated, use a small amount, only leave it on for a short period opf time. and wash with a premium shampoo, not a cheap brand. |

We should all get together and write a phamplet on how to rid oneself of lice.like a little recipe book.:)give it out free to public schools and the parents could choose their own recipe.I know ,am being silly.:)

Lice like clean hair they can attach themselves to it,if you have oily hair they can not normally attach themselves and lay eggs.

you guys are making my head itch!!!! But seriously, I do agree with those of you that say that the chemical treatments do not work. When my daughter was in the 4th grade, we battled with those little boogers for months. My mother finally told me to cover her head in olive oil and wrap it with plastic wrap for 45 minutes. the oild suffocates the bugs and the eggs and the plastic wrap "kinda" keeps the olive oil off her face. It worked!! We finally won the war!!
But you have to use olive oil, not regular veg. oil. the olive oil is thicker and with suffocate them better. |

Does this work if they have already got lice, too? It's a great idea. Any method to reduce the chemicals in our lives is a good thing! |
