I moved to Belhaven about three years ago. At first I thought this charming town was the perfect picture of small town america. It did not take long to realize that you needed to be in the Belhaven prosperity group to be considered worthy. The town is run by two families, the O'Neals' and Boyettes'. For the most part town members live in a glass bubble and shield themselves from the lower class and less fortunate. The churches consider having a breakfast once a month or throwing a box of food in the back of someones trunk as paid dues on the road to heaven. Boy are they ever going to be fooled. I've been fortunate to meet what the town considers lower class people and they are the best of Belhaven. It is really unfortunate that the society of Belhaven ruins this beautiful town. I moved here from Washington DC to escape the unfriendly people that lives in a large city. Wow did I ever fool myself. People that read forums to aid in relocation should hear the truth about a town.

I have read you comments I am a homeowner who plans on retiring and moving permanetly down o bellhaven The town and its location are beautiful I have often wondered what direction this town is heading and plan on speaking to the people in charge the people elected The town has a history of misguidance that must stop

I've been to Belhaven several times. Karen Brown of Belhaven Inn is really nice and the fish hook restaurent is my favorate place to eat. The really fine people are there, you just need to be open to them. Don't let a few ruin your experience. You will find some good friends there.

One of the hinderances for people wanting to speak up at town meetings is that Mayor O'Neal will take 30 minutes to put you down or prove you wrong if your comments are not to his liking. The good people of Belhaven(and there are many) MUST make it clear that they want to be heard and have all people treated with respect. It IS OK to disagree at times but that should NOT stop the town from moving forward. It's difficult for things to change but working together towns can grow. The politicians in town need to ask themselves "What would Jesus do?" Good luck Belhaven!
