North Dakota's Board of Higher Education has agreed to drop the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname and Indian head logo, a move intended to resolve a decades-long campus dispute about whether the name demeans American Indians.

I cannot see how a name like Fighting Sioux demeans Native Americans, although it is of course up to the Sioux to make the final determination. Sports teams name themselves for powerful animals or fighters, e.g. Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, Nittany Lions, Spartans, Trojans, and so on. I have yet to hear anyone contend that the Michigan State Spartans are offensive to Greek-Americans, or that the West Virginia Mountaineers offend people from Appalachia. Poland, meanwhile, has a soccer team called the Husaria, and the fans dress up in the wings that were once worn by Poland's cavalry, so I doubt it is offensive to Poles.

The name "Fighting Sioux" should instead remind people that the Sioux were once among the best mounted soldiers on earth. It would in fact be a disservice to Sioux history to get rid of the name. As a final note, I have yet to hear of a sports team naming itself for the Seventh Cavalry.:-)

They imagine that this nickname, no matter how respectfully it's used, causes harm to Native Americans. Even though more than 80 percent of Native Americans oppose banning the name, liberals know what's best.
