These accidents are horribly, horribly sad! Is there anything the lawn mower companies can do to ensure these kinds of accidents don't occur. I don't know a lot about the riders. A friend & I were just talking and she suggested the mowers to be engineered so that the blades stopped while in reverse? A child could still be injured but maybe it would reduce the severity of it.

It is my understanding that the technology to stop the blades when a lawn mower goes in reverse has been around since the 1970's & it is called "no mow in reverse" and it is a $5 part. Many manufactures don't put it on because they think the consumers don't want it. There are people who do not want it. I have researched it and couldn't believe that people are against NMIR. Also, if they put it on then there is an overide option. The reason I am familiar with this is because 9 yrs ago I accidentally backed over my 4 1/2 yr old son & he lost most of his left foot. My mower didn't have no mow in reverse. Our new mower has it! Children need to be educated at an early age that lawn mowers are not toys and the dangers of them. Children have no idea that blades like sharp knives are spinning very fast underneath of the mower because the blades can not be scene. People should not even ride on the mowers with their children on their laps even if the blades are off! While the yard is being mowed children should be kept in the house under another adults supervision.

Adults are responsible for most injuries. Children have no business around mowers or on them. Preventing mowers from operating in reverse is a good idea but have ways of circumventing this saftey.

Well said Walt. While I'm sure these accidents are truly just tragic accidents, the parents are the ones responsible. I love that my mower goes in reverse. Children should NOT be around while the lawn is being cut. Maybe have them stay indoors. OR if you are a single parent, maybe have someone come over and supervise the children breifly while you mow the lawn.

this happened to me when i waas three. im missing my left foot. sometimes things happens and as parent you have to live with itand as part a a community you have to understand parents are there to guide and protect and the child still can slip through and has power to make a mistake that they must learn from.

I was run over by a riding mower when I was 12. I am 44 and due to the deep, deep lacerations I have circulation issues and continual vein problems.
